The video guide still holds and for leveling, the build still haven't changed since ages ago. It functions simply due to minions being insanely overtuned while leveling. They get all of your stats, and they have some lovely multipliers to go along with it making the build exceptional for leveling. And in Season 9, it's also great in the endgame!
Use this only for leveling. Once you have your ultimate, you can transition into pure minions
Hemorrhage is used when you're out of resources. Only used in the early game.
Sever - resource spender for damage
Raise skeleton - use when your minions are dead
Golem Ability use for big stonks
Corpse Tendril gathers up enemies for you
Corpse Explosion used when there are corpses around you. Grants you damage, essence. Also great for AOE and in events.
For this build, there are no mandatory aspects or gear. Anything that is remotely useful to the build will set you up nicely.

Your essence generator is hemorrhage in the starting variant. You'll use that essence to dish out sever
When you have corpses around you, you'll use corpse tendril to gather enemies and corpse explosion to deal A O E damage.
To heal yourself, you can use raise skeleton when you have the blood getter's aspect, and golem active whenever you're low.

Army of the Dead is now used to summon your buddies back alive, and you're letting your minions do all the work for you.
You also have Blood Mist which you can use as a get-out-of-jail free card, as well as drop corpses for your corpse tendrils.
