Build Overview

This guide is a work in progress, so make sure to hit Favorite and check back regularly for updates as we move through the first week of the Lord of Hatred launch.

That said, don’t worry. There won’t be any major changes that move away from the core idea of the build, only refinements and improvements to make it even better.

This is my Chain Lightning Levelling Sorcerer, an extremely mobile, fun, and consistent build that works right from the start. It can demolish large groups of enemies very early on, while dashing from A to B at lightning-quick speeds.

Overall, it’s an excellent introduction to the Sorcerer and one of my personal favorite builds for leveling.

Strengths and Weaknesses

  • Fantastic AoE
  • Locks enemies in place with stuns
  • Highly Mobile
  • Hardcore friendly
  • Mana issues

The setup above is not mandatory early on. You likely won’t have every Aspect, socket, or gem yet, but it’s a good reference for what you’re working toward.

Early gearing priorities:

  • Get an Aspect on your weapon as soon as possible for a big damage boost.
  • Add a resource Aspect on your rings or amulet to help keep Chain Lightning active.
  • Use a movement speed Aspect to move around the map faster.
  • Start adding defensive Aspects once fights become tougher.

Stat priorities:

  • Intelligence
  • Maximum Life
  • Resistances on as many pieces as possible
  • Movement Speed on boots
  • Cooldown Reduction wherever you can, this will help greatly for keeping Unstable Currents up, and Ice Armor for bonus survivability

Tempering:

  • Temper early and often.
  • All Resistance is a great starting point on gear.
  • Add Cooldown Reduction on rings and amulet.
  • Movement Speed on boots
  • Add Lightning Damage on weapons.

Runes:

  • Neo + Gar for boost to crit chance
  • Cir + Ceh for puppies! Upgrade Cir to Nagu
  • Other options can include: Cir + Thul (freeze enemies)

Early Uniques:

  • Sometimes RNG can be a curse but sometimes we can get blessed, if you get blessed and find Axial Conduit pants, definitely equip those!
  • Levin Grasp also can be some great gloves early on if you find them!

Talismans

Like the setup above, there are no hard recommendations here.

  • For the most part, you’ll be taking what you can get while leveling.
  • When you do have options, prioritize:
    • Resistances
    • Armor
    • Movement Speed
    • + Shock Skills
  • After that, anything that increases your damage is a solid choice.

Mercenary

For Mercenaries, there is definitely some personal preference here, but I like going with Raheir. He solves a lot of early-game defensive issues with boosted All Resistance, damage immunity, and plenty of healing.

For reinforcement, Varyana with Bloodthirst is a great option, giving us a nice attack speed boost to help increase overall DPS.

How it Plays

  1. Stay close to enemies
To play this Chain Lightning build, there are a few things you’ll need to do that might seem a little unusual at first. The main one is staying close to the enemy you’re attacking.

This is because of Power Flux Chain Lightning, which allows Chain Lightning to bounce between enemies, but also between you and the enemy. In single-target situations, this can dramatically increase your DPS, so you’ll want to stay close whenever possible.
  2. Engage with Weaken Teleport
The easiest way to do this is by using Teleport to jump directly onto the enemy as you engage.

Thanks to the Weaken Teleport passive, this will also apply Weaken, reducing the damage they deal during the first few seconds of combat.
  3. Cycle Spark and Chain Lightning
From there, you’ll want to cycle between Spark as your filler and Chain Lightning as your main damage dealer. This will be your core gameplay loop throughout leveling.
  4. Use your summons in tougher fights
For tougher fights especially, make sure you’re using your summon: Hydra

Hydra adds solid damage while also healing you through Healing Hydra, reducing your cooldowns with Cooldown Reduction Hydra as it attacks, and burning nearby enemies Bathed in Flame Hydra.

Your Familiar Enchantment helps with consistent area-of-effect damage, while also chilling enemies and healing you thanks to Healing Flames Familiar. Together, they don’t just boost your damage, they also add a ton of extra survivability.
  5. Use Ice Armor often
If you’re in a really tough situation, you also have Ice Armor to rely on. This creates a temporary Barrier to help keep you alive. Use it often during fights, especially because Hydra’s attacks will help reduce its cooldown, allowing you to keep it available more often.
  6. Use Unstable Currents often, this will boost your damage and summon conjurations to increase your overall AoE and damage.

How it Works

The main engine of this build is Chain Lightning combined with the Chain Lightning enchantment. Chain Lightning deals strong direct damage to multiple enemies. Using Unstable Currents often can help clear areas fast.

This lets us double up on AoE damage and gives the build very strong clearing power from as early as Level 15 (for enchantment) and Level 19 for ultimate skill.

Familiar helps with both survivability and AoE damage, dealing a large amount of splash damage when summoned. Hydra helps support your single-target damage, especially when placed directly on top of the enemy you want to kill, as Bathed in Flame Hydra deals significant damage to nearby enemies.

Spark is used as your filler spell while waiting for mana to regenerate. Whenever you can’t cast Chain Lightning, swap back to Spark until you can start spending mana again.

Mobility is handled through Teleport allowing you to move around the map incredibly quickly. This helps make Chain Lightning one of the faster leveling builds available.

Hopefully, you’ve enjoyed this early-game version of Chain Lightning Sorcerer. As a reminder, this guide is currently a work in progress, with near-daily updates planned during the first week of launch.

Once you’ve finished leveling, don’t forget to check out some of the endgame builds on our tier list to see where to go next.
