VALORANT Guide: How to Use the Odin on Defense (Wallbang Spots and More)

VALORANT Odin Wallbang Tips and Tricks for Defense

The Odin is best known for its strong bullet penetration through walls and…for starting arguments in the chat with opponents.

This article will focus on how powerful the Odin can be on defense, specifically when in the hands of Cypher or Sova due to the gun’s synergy with agent -revealing abilities like Trapwires and Recon Dart.

For each map, we will showcase exactly where you should be looking to make these Odin wallbang plays.

Note that these setups aren’t the only ways to use the Odin so be sure to experiment on your own as well!

When and why you should purchase the Odin

The Odin is quite expensive, priced at 3200. It becomes a situational purchase when you add up the cost of buying a shield and all your utility.

You will need to have roughly 5000 credits to purchase the Odin without having to make sacrifices to your kit.

It’s not recommended to crush your own economy just to rush an Odin early in the game.

It might even work in your favor to let the enemy see that you are playing a very orthodox style of defense with your rifle for the first few rounds.

Later, a scenario may arise where you won the most recent round and you survived but some of your teammates died, consequently they are now broke and unable to purchase a rifle.

If you now have 5000 credits, this may just be the optimal way to introduce the Odin to your game, by dropping your Vandal or Phantom to your teammate.

This way you have been cost efficient whilst spicing up your hold on site with a weapon change that the opponents won’t suspect.

The Odin has the best bullet penetration in the game, meaning you can deal lethal damage quicker through walls than if you were to use any other gun.

Many walls and objects in VALORANT are highly penetrable and those that you should look to make wallbang plays on will now be discussed.

P.S. Remember to always scope in when firing your Odin as it makes it a lot easier to control its crazy recoil.

Cypher Garage Setup

Cypher garage setup

Standing in the middle of Garage is quite an uncomfortable position to be in if you are an attacker.

Attackers generally like to clear out the garage relatively quickly and most of their focus is on whether a defender will peek the window in front of them or C site link.

Since their focus is on anticipating enemy peeks they are likely to be tripped by your wires leading to free kills.

In this situation, if you know they have entered the garage, but have destroyed your trips or are yet to activate them, you can use your camera (placed above the garage door) to reveal their location, and then Odin wallbang them.

The large box in the middle of C site provides you with plenty of cover to spam your Odin onto enemies that have been tripped by your wires.

I don’t see too many people using the Odin to wallbang here.

This is surprising since it barely reduces the damage that your bullets inflict, allowing you to secure kills rapidly.

Sova’s Mid Control

The more lineups you learn on Sova the better equipped you will be when it comes to making Odin plays across the map.

Get creative with your Recon Darts, research them on YouTube for each map you like playing Sova on, and also test them out in custom games or unrated.

Here are two we think are strong for revealing the enemy location if you suspect they could be mid.

Split

Cypher’s A Hold

Cypher is commonly known for his B hold on Split, however, his A hold is arguably just as good.

The blue screen in the middle of A site is very weak and allows for high bullet penetration even with regular guns.

So you can just imagine how quickly an Odin will be able to tear down opponents that have fallen victim to your Trapwires.

Here is a good utility setup to use on A when playing behind the blue screen with an Odin.

These two Trapwires provide you with an excellent chance of securing some wallbang kills.

Bind

Cypher’s B Hold

Cypher is well renowned for how strong his utility is on B site Bind.

His Spycam can be placed in a very challenging location for the enemy to destroy, and he has many options to choose from in regards to placing Trapwires and Cyber Cages.

Here is a recommended setup, I would recommend mixing it up from round to round to keep the enemy on their toes.

These two Trapwires can be hard to place initially but you will get the hang of it eventually.

They are very hard for the opponent to find and destroy and catch them off guard in an awkward, open and vulnerable position on site. Here is how you can use the Odin with these two wires.

You can communicate with your team and ask to switch sites mid-game to really confuse opponents. This is recommended especially if you have two sentinels.

Cypher has a very effective defensive hold on A for both showers side and A short.

If he plays behind the double box he can hold both at once.

Set up like this if you are playing inside U-Hall (Lamps).

Here is an example of how effective these trips can be with the Odin.

Odin Bind 3

Setup yourCypher utility like this if you are playing behind the double box.

 behind the double box

Here is an example of how you can kill enemies through the double box when they activate your wires.

(Note: If the enemy has a Sage on their team I would recommend playing the U-Hall setup since her default Barrier Orb across from tank to pocket would cut you off if you were behind double box.)

Ascent

Ascent may just be the best map of all to use the Odin on. There are heaps of thin brick walls, wooden structures and radianite boxes that you can make the most of with your wallbangs.

Sova excels on both sides of the map

Check out the opening clip here by Average Jonas, this is a very common way to aggressively contest the enemy for B main control on Ascent.

The opponents can retaliate and attempt to return fire through the wall but they will be at a massive disadvantage since they probably won’t have an Odin and don’t have your body revealed.

At 4:22 he demonstrates how valuable learning Recon Dart lineups can be for taking down enemies when retaking sites. The wooden surface that separates heaven and hell on A site Ascent can easily be sprayed from the top down with an Odin and can deal lethal damage rapidly.

Cypher’s utility set up for A site

Cypher’s utility set up for A site

These Trapwires will be hard to destroy as enemies will most likely be W keying site rather quickly to spread out, clear angles and gain control.

Placing Trapwires in areas like this where it is unlikely for your enemies to be shiftwalking increases your chances of them being set off.

You can play behind double box and wallbang through with the Odin onto revealed opponents. You could even play in Hell whilst having set up your wires deeper on-site, like connecting double box to hell and double box to generator since the wooden wall in hell allows for high bullet penetration.

Closing thoughts

I recommend using these strategies sparingly, make sure not to overuse them since you run the risk of making yourself predictable.

Additionally, be mindful of the enemy team composition and whether certain strategies might work better than others, as stated previously if the enemy attackers have a Sage on attack for Bind it might be best to attempt a U-Hall wallbang play rather than a double box one for A site.

I’d also recommend getting creative with the placement of your Trapwires.

Try to imagine where the enemy location would be revealed and whether you are in a safe enough position to execute wallbangs with your Odin (and obviously whether the wall is penetrable).

One last thing, don’t forget that all of the green radianite boxes that can be found on most maps allow for high bullet penetration.

Many radianite boxes are the cover that enemy attackers use when planting the bomb, so be sure to seize the chance to wallbang.

Best of luck if you are trying any of these setups or plays, hopefully they help you out when defending in VALORANT!
