League of Legends New Game Mode: 2v2v2v2
At the start of Season 13, Riot Games confirmed that there will be a new game mode called “2v2v2v2”, where 8 players face off against each other in 4 teams of 2. The intention of this new game mode is supposed to be a quick death match that players can hop in and out of.
This new game mode is intended to hit the live servers sometime in Summer 2023, so it should be coming out relatively soon. This is a good sign that League of Legends may be back on the rise, as it has been a long time since they created a new game mode or map.
Please Note: This WIP article will be updated after more information about the new game mode is released.
The New Game Mode Explained
The new game mode consists of 4 teams of 2, fighting against each other to the death. It is intended to be a quick game mode where players level up, get items and go head-to-head in rounds against other teams. Everyone gets a ban, and then you cannot see who the enemy has picked. You will find mirror matchups.
There are no runes or summoner spells, but you get a lot of gold which you can buy items with. Not liking how the game is going? Easily leave the game with the exit mechanic. Or if you get a bad start, you can leave pretty quickly when you get eliminated.
When Will the Game Mode be Released?
There isn’t a confirmed date yet for the new event, but rest assured, it will be released sometime this year. Riot has noted that it is a “big summer event”, so it should be relatively soon.
You can find out more information with the Dev Blog.
What Does the New Map Look Like?
Summoners Rift will still exist regardless of this new game mode. Riot will be creating a new map for this new game mode that is similar to many other battle arenas. Check below for some concept art.
Will There Be a Ranked Mode?
There WILL be a Ranked Mode! The ranks are as follows going from lowest to highest:
- Wood
- Bronze
- Silver
- Gold
- Gladiator
What Champions Can I Play?
Riot hasn’t explicitly said that X or Y champion will be in the new game mode, so it’s safe to assume that all champions will be playable. However, expect there to be a meta for the game mode as soon as it launches.
All champions will be available in the new game mode.
There will be no runes or summoner spells. There will be Augments that impact the game though.
“These Augments are designed to combine in interesting ways with champion kits, augmenting their fantasy and forcing players to adapt to some really crazy situations. Up to and including new Summoner Spells.” – RIOT MAXW3LL
Final Thoughts
It is cool to see Riot creating a new game mode and actually listening to its community about wanting a battle arena. I am excited to see what happens, as it should be out relatively soon.
