Understand His Weaknesses

Every champion in League of Legends have their own strengths and weaknesses. Hwei is no exception to this. First off, his major issue is his mobility- or his lack of it. He is extremely immobile which means his easy to take down when he is caught out of position. Making him overextend and taking him down is a great way of beating him.

Secondly, he struggles vs all in champions. This kind of ties in with the first tip, but, he is prone to all ends and struggles against burst champions. So if you pick a champion that can deal a lot of damage quickly, and can jump on him – you will do well against him.

Another major weakness is his low-base defensive stats. This means he is squishy early and make it easier for Champions to kill him. If you pick one of the suggested champions later on in this guide, then you’re going to kill him over and over again.

Teamfighting Tips and Tricks

Now let’s move on to team fighting tips and tricks. He is a great team fighter, I have to give him that. That is an issue for anyone trying to counter him though.

Now, I recommend avoiding fighting in tight areas of the map where your team will be grouped closely together. The main reason for this is his Ultimate is really good in team fights, and when you are grouped together, it makes it easy after him to get a really good Ultimate off. Additionally, he has a lot of AOE damage, which isn’t good when teams group closely because he can deal damage to multiple enemies simultaneously.

So where should you team fight? Ideally, don’t fight around the Baron or in the jungle. Instead fight in extremely open areas, or just ensure that your team is not really close to one another to make it harder for him to deal a lot of damage in team fights.

Abuse Him Early

Abusing him early is going to make his mid and late-game rather weak. This is extremely good because not only will you get yourself ahead, but you can repeatedly get your Jungler to help you to set him behind even further.

In this guide, we would’ve talked about many different things you can do to get ahead, but the key is that you set him behind early. Here are some additional tips you can use to abuse his weak early laning phase.

  • Force him to overextend. He is immobile, so you can chase down the lane and kill him.
  • Play around his cooldowns. This will help you win trades as he will be lacking an ability.
  • Freeze near your tower. Freezing near your tower will force him to overextend, but you can also set him behind by denying him CS and XP.

Get Some MR

If you didn’t know already, or if it is your first time playing against him, he will deal mostly AP damage.

He can be extremely strong if he gets ahead, but regardless of how strong or weak he is, he will still deal quite a bit of damage. This is why investing in items that will give you magic resistance is incredibly important.

Head over to your favourite champions Champion Page, and see what defensive and situational items work well on them, and if there’s an MR items, purchase one of them.

Counter Picks

As we suggested, you can count to him by picking champions with a lot of burst and assassin potential. Bowling champions are extremely good, especially the AD ones, as he is immobile and lacks a lot of armour.

This means champions like these are good against him:

Zed

Zed has a lot of all in potential and can burst him down. He is also extremely mobile, which is good because you can chase Hwei down when he overextends. An issue for this matchup is that he does have the range advantage, so you will need to play accordingly.

Zed is also great at roaming so you can help your allies after killing him in the middle lane.

Talon

This champion is also extremely strong early on and can get an early kill versus him. As we have suggested, he is kind of weak early. So if you can put him behind by getting a kill. You are also stronger than him post six.

Just like Zed, Talon is a fantastic roaming champion as well so you can out-roam him with ease.

Qiyana

The final champion that we are going to recommend is Qiyana. While she may not be as strong as the other two early, she does have a lot of kill potential and she can abused his immobile nature. This is really good because you’ll put him behind which will make it harder for him to carry later on.

She is also an amazing roaming champion, and grating team fights which is a another bonus.

Battle Boss Qiyana

Ban Him in Ranked

Whenever I do one of these counter articles, I always throw in this tip at the end. To avoid being annoyed by your allies playing him, and your allies inting against him. Just ban Hwei if you intend to play ranked.

It will save you a lot of problems with your teammates not understanding his kit, and it will prevent him from dominating and 1v9ining as Riot usually released champions op as f***!
