TFT Set 15 Guide: How to Play Mentor

How to Play Mentor — TFT Set 15: K.O. Coliseum

Mentor is a new trait in Set 15 where it has options to be activated at 1 or 4 pieces. We have seen traits like this in the past that have often lead these compositions to be very flexible with multiple different builds around them. Hopefully that will be the same for this set!

Explore all of the new Set 15 traits here!

How TFT Mentor Works

TFT Set 15 Mentor

Mentor Trait Bonus

This trait is active only when you have exactly 1 or 4 unique Mentor.

Old Mentor 1: Allies gain the bonus
Old Mentors 4: Mentors gain all bonuses and upgrade their abilities. Other allies gain nothing.

  • Kobuko: 7% DR
  • Udyr: 10% AD & AP
  • Yasuo: 12% AS
  • Ryze: +2 mana per attack

Mentor Synergy

Here are the additional traits of the Mentor champions that give the opportunity to create trait webs:

  • Kobuko (2G) – Heavyweight
  • Udyr (3G) – Juggernaut & Duelist
  • Yasuo (3G) – Edgelord
  • Ryze (4G) – Executioner & Strategist

The Mentor Trait

The Mentor is similar to traits we have seen in the past where it is unique where you must have either 1 or 4 pieces to activate the trait – 2 or 3 pieces does not allow the trait to be activated. The units are 2, 3, 3, and 4 gold respectively so hitting the 4 isn’t too hard as it doesn’t require you to even have multiple 4s or a single 5 cost champion.

The units have a lot of me melee synergies as they are melee units with the exception of Ryze. I would expect them to be splashed with other melee champions along with executions and strategists that go well with Ryze.

TFT Mentor Champions

Kobuko (2G) – Heavyweight

The lowest cost unit of Mentor, Kobuko has the Heavyweight tag which makes him a melee item holder that could be used in the early game for units in the Mentor composition for later. His ability, Golden Paw Mantra allows him to gain (AP) shield for 3 seconds. The next attack deals (AD & Health) bonus physical damage and stuns for 1.75 seconds. Kobuko is important because a stun that long is good in any part of the game. This makes him as a 2 gold unit super useful as stunning some units can be absolutely devastating. Especially compositions with low sustain who are looking to run you down quickly. This makes Kobuko viable throughout the whole game whether it be your 1 of Mentor of 4 of piece Mentor.

Udyr (3G) – Juggernaut & Duelist

TFT Set 15 Udyr

Udyr has two additional traits Juggernaut and Duelist that allow him additional flexibility in the Mentor trait. His ability Blazing Phoenix Stance makes 3 rapid attacks. Each heals Udyr for (AP) and deals (AD) additional damage to enemies in a 1-hex radius. In classic Duelist fashion, Udyr likes to attack fast and heal. He would most likely benefit from vertical Duelist. It would be more likely that Mentor gets splashed in Duelist rather than Mentor dipping into Duelist as a trait.

Yasuo (3G) – Edgelord

TFT Set 15 Yasuo

Yasuo’s ability Unsheath the Storm deals (AD) physical damage to the 3 closest enemies. Edgelords also enable Yasuo quite well. In a similar fashion to Udyr, it is likely that Mentor gets splashed into Edgelord verticals as an additional buff option.

Ryze (4G) – Executioner & Strategist

TFT Set 15 Ryze

Ryze is a 4 cost unit with 3 traits, Mentor, Executioner, and Strategist. He can be in position to be the carry in this comp and have his additional traits activated. His ability Tsunami Beam deals (AP) magic damage to the target over 3 seconds. Enemies in a 1-hex radius around the target take (AP) over the same duration. This makes him want to be positioned a little closer to the center of the board potentially to make sure his damage is able to go to the additional hex around the target.
