Shadow Priest Leveling Guide (1-60)

Overview

Priest is a ranged spellcaster focused on support, offering powerful party buffs like Power Word: Fortitude and Divine Spirit as well as strong healing throughput, though their reliance on cloth armor leaves them vulnerable to physical damage. Shadow gains potent shadow damage over time (DoT) spells and constant damage through channeling Mind Flay. By taking Shadowform, Shadow Priests trade access to healing spells for boosted Shadow damage, physical defense, and large mana discounts. Vampiric Embrace translates this increased Shadow damage into healing for groups, striking a unique balance between damage, raid utility, and off-healing.

Priest early-game will mostly revolve around keeping our Shadow Word: Pain and Devouring Plague DoT's up on enemies while wanding them to death with the high damage bonus from Wand Specialization. With a lot of our power inside these DoT's we will be attempting to pull 2-3 enemies at a time once we unlock our toolkit, using Power Word: Shield and Renew to easily keep ourselves alive while we wand enemies down one-by-one while the rest get ticked down.

Later on around Level 40 we unlock Shadowform giving a big power spike where we will mostly be attempting to kill singular enemies before they break through our Power Word: Shield. Gameplay around this level mainly includes DoT'ing an enemy before slowing them with Mind Flay while they walk to us. Enemies below 20% hp get executed with a great synergy between Shadow Word: Death and the talent Early Demise along with the +100% crit damage bonus from Shadowform.

Priest still has a wide variety in their toolkit with Power Word: Shield, Renew,Psychic Scream, and one of the two classes with Dispel Magic, along with a myriad of other powerful healing abilities. These tools allow us to survive dangerous Elite or AoE encounters where other classes can't and support team members that normally can not sustain themselves. Even with the majority of your talents in the Shadow tree you should still be able to heal dungeons all the way up to at least level 40 with minimal issues, giving you multiple options to play with others in group content.

Main Ability Changes

Shadow Word: Death - New ability being introduced into WoW: Forever, a strong execute to kill off enemies below 20% health, allowing us to trigger Spirit Tap easier in group content. Any Priest will be able to learn this spell at level 32 but Early Demise from the Shadow tree will buff it for us even further.

Dark Inspiration - New talent that gives Shadow a party wide spirit buff, making it a valuable pickup in the endgame for raid healers and some casters to ensure maximum mana regeneration.

Shadowform - Reworked stance that increases our Shadow damage by 10% (was 15%) except also reduces the Mana cost of all Shadow spells by 50% AND increases the critical strike damage bonus of Shadow spells by 100%. We will get into how this affects our stats and rotation later.

Vampiric Embrace - Now a 30s cooldown (was 10s) and lasts for 30s (was 1min) This change looks gloomy but allows for Blizzard to let us do more damage and not be the most overpowered DPS spec in the game, and for a little bonus, Spirit Tap triggers when an enemy with this debuff dies as well.

Shadow Weaving - Now only increases the casters Shadow damage. This means our damage output will be more individual focused instead of our power being distributed across all Shadow damage dealers that would take advantage of this buff.

Devouring Plague - Strong Shadow damage DoT with only a 24s cooldown (was 3min), allowing permanent uptime of this DoT. This spell used to only be an Undead racial is now learned baseline at level 20, allowing all factions and races to benefit from this new main rotational ability, we'll get more into racials below.

Fear Ward - Prevents the next Fear on the target. Also used to only be a Dwarf racial is now learned baseline at level 20, this was really strong utility in original classic raids and we expect it to remain strong in endgame content.

Racials

Alliance

  1. Night Elf will likely be the best race for damage due to the Elune's Light racial working with ALL spells and abilities, combo with Shadow Word: Pain and Mind Flay being able to crit, as well as Shadowform granting 100% extra critical strike damage, this racial gives us a well synergized damage boost that no other racial does. Currently it is unknown if Starshards will be worth pressing over Mind Flay especially with a lot of racials being tuned, however, current numbers indicate that it could see use all the way to and maybe past Level 60. For utility, we also get Elune's Grace which can reduce a lot of damage taken in niche scenarios.
  2. Human is right beside Night Elf with its newly updated racial Ruthless giving a baseline +2% crit chance! This is insanely powerful as a baseline permanent buff, synergizing incredibly well with Shadowform giving Shadow Spells +100% critical strike damage, this alone averages out to be better than the baseline Elune's Light and Eureka! from Night Elf and Gnome, only falling short to Night Elf because of our Starshards prediction. Utility wise, Human gets Divine Grace and Feedback both mediocre abilities that will likely not see a lot of use while leveling.
  3. Gnome is very close behind Human with Eureka! granting a flat 10% damage boost to non-periodic abilities, for us this affects Mind Blast, Holy Fire, Shadow Word: Death, and surprisingly, Mind Flay, despite it being periodic damage the spell contains a tag to have its damage modified by this racial, however it does not affect Shadow Word: Pain or Devouring Plague causes it to fall behind Night Elf and Human. Gnome definitely wins out in utility though with Contingency Plan granting a pseudo cheat death when active, Confounding Flash blinding nearby enemies (especially useful against the fear-immune Undead), and Escape Artist providing freedom of movement for a suite of many life-saving tools to get out of almost any situation.
  4. Dwarf leaves more to be desired in terms of throughput with Earth Fury being a mediocre addition to crit damage compared to Shadowform's +100%. For priest specific racials we are granted Desperate Prayer and Chastise. With Dwarf it seems as if its priest racials are more aimed towards PvP with its instant heal and instant root, alongside its baseline Stoneform makes this a good choice for PvP but not much else.

Horde

  1. Undead and Horde in general get the short end of the stick in terms of throughput racials, with Undead having a slight edge due to the Touch of the Grave passive throughput. Undead do have the bonus of Dark Sacrifice Priest racial sacrificing life for mana and Cannibalize granting mana now, it could be a crucial skill in long fights or if you're caught out in a bad spot without being able to drink this could save you. Unfortunately Touch of Weakness provides little throughput.
  2. Troll gains Berserking as its only throughput racial, but is only spellcasting speed and only lasts for 10 seconds on a 3 minute cooldown which in my opinion is not as good as the insane mana regeneration from Undead. Although with Rapid Regeneration you can fear and heal a lot of hp for no mana, especially useful for PvP, Hex of Weakness and Shadowguard could provide the extra healing reduction and thorns damage to finish off a player but its use cases are limited.

Talent Progression

Level

Talent

Reasoning

10-11

Wand Specialization 2/2

Wands will be the majority of our damage for the next 20ish levels, get a wand ASAP if you haven't already, Enchanting has ones available to craft early.

12-16

Spirit Tap 5/5

Doubles our spirit (mana regen) after killing an enemy and allows 50% of our mana to regen while casting, VERY strong talent that will allow us to keep fighting and pulling enemies with minimal breaks.

17-18

Improved Shadow Word: Pain 2/2

As we approach the 20's mobs start to live long enough for this DoT to expire, making this talent really valuable to maintain max uptime.

19-20

Shadow Reach 2/2

Increases our normal 30yd range to 36yd with most spells, the further we are away from an enemy the longer it takes for them to start damaging us, allowing us to cast Mind Flay longer before we get spell pushback in the future.

Gameplay & Rotation

Out of combat preparation

  1. Maintain Power Word: Fortitude
  2. Maintain or refresh Inner Fire
  3. Refresh Shadowguard if you have the Troll racial
  4. Ensure you have enough health and mana to kill the next mob

Rotation

  1. Power Word: Shield right before pulling
  2. Use Elune's Light, Eureka!, or Berserking if you have those racials.
  3. Pull with Mind Blast or Smite if not learned yet
  4. Shadow Word: Pain, you can move slightly while on GCD to maintain range
  5. Starshards if you have the Night Elf racial and have distance from the enemy
  6. Smite with any extra mana you know you will not need to start the next pull
  7. Wand the enemy to death, try not to cast as to maintain our 5-second rule mana regeneration
  8. Auto-Attack the enemy if you do not have a wand yet

General Gameplay

5-Second Rule

Might be the most important mechanic that dictates how we play. The 5-Second Rule says that our mana regeneration stops for 5 seconds after we last spent mana, meaning if you cast a 3 second long cast it will start that 5 second timer when the cast finishes not when it sarts.

Talents and abilities such as Spirit Tap and Meditation allow a certain amount of mana to continue regenerating past this timer. The 5-Second Rule is why we want to dump a lot of mana on damage at the start of a pull, before wanding and letting our mana regenerate so its available for the start of next pull. Spells that do not cost mana such as spells affected by Inner Focus, and other free abilities such as Contingency Plan and Desperate Prayer do not affect or stop mana from regenerating so use those freely.

Maximizing Uptime

Priest has a special way of leveling in that most of our damage comes from DoT's and wanding. We have many tools and healing to keep ourselves alive in the early levels meaning we should try to pull multiple mobs at a time.

Once you get a wand, maximize uptime by pulling 2-3 enemies at the same time and maintain Shadow Word: Pain on all of them, using Power Word: Shield and Renew to keep ourselves topped while wanding them down one by one. If possible try to spread Devouring Plague if talented into Devouring Contagion by killing one enemy quickly.

If we get too scared we can always use Psychic Scream and cast a full Heal, if you need to fear often then consider lowering the amount of enemies you pull.

Utility

There are tons of utility spells that we will learn on our journey, these may not be worth your gold, depending on how you play you can skip training these. Spells will get relatively cheaper to train compared to how much gold you earn per level, so you'll want to learn them all eventually.

Fade (Level 8) - Reduces your threat by a flat amount, increased based on spell rank, useful in group content especially since Mind Blast generates high threat, using with 0 threat or solo has no affect.

Cure Disease (Level 14) - Extremely useful with the long, punishing diseases in the Classic world.

Psychic Scream (Level 14) - Powerful tool that fears enemies off of you and allows easy recovery, this is your main Crowd Control.

Dispel Magic (Level 18) - Priest is the only class that gets a magic dispel until way later when Paladin learns theirs at Level 42, there are many magic debuffs all over the world especially in dungeons, dispel in this version has no cooldown.

Fear Ward (Level 20) - Prevents the next fear on the target, very useful in endgame raiding or PvP, but will be uncommon and unpredictable enough while leveling that you can temporarily skip it.

Mind Soothe (Level 20) - Reduces pull range of humanoid mobs, entirely dependent on your playstyle if its worth to skip. It can be useful for skipping enemies in caves or dangerous areas, can be useful in groups to stop patrolling mobs from pulling.

Shackle Undead (Level 20) - Pretty much just an Undead Polymorph, useful if you accidentally pulled too many mobs since Undead are immune to fear from Psychic Scream and the former Polymorph, becomes incredibly valuable when you start questing in the Plaguelands.

Mind Vision (Level 22) - Skip training. Useful to spot quest mobs in tricky locations, using a /target macro then casting this spell will allow you to easily see their location, however, with the new Ping system in WoW: Forever, it is very easy to locate these enemies. Can also be used to scout rares in dungeons.

Mind Control (Level 30) - Allows you to take control of an enemy, fun ability with a niche use while leveling, use this to take control of an enemy in a large group of mobs and letting them kill your mind control. Specific controlled enemies can provide powerful, unique buffs to ourselves and other players especially at endgame. Incredibly powerful in PvP to jump enemy players off edges or to create distance.

Abolish Disease (Level 32) - Replacement for Cure Disease, very few moments where there are so many diseases you need to have this constantly cleanse, but it is a strict upgrade for the same mana cost so just replace your old spell.

Levitate (Level 34) - Slows falling speed, very useful to jump off of cliffs, mountains, or bridges while leveling, this spell has a reagent cost of 1 Light Feather, these are mostly cheap on the Auction House, but if not any Harpy has a high chance of dropping these.

Group Play

Playing in a group means you will most likely have someone else tanking the mobs for you while also most likely pulling multiple mobs at a time.

Keep Shadow Word: Pain on all mobs at all times, with a secondary priority in trying to cleave Devouring Plague onto other mobs if talented into Devouring Contagion by using it on a low health enemy thats about to die. Try to finish off enemies with a big damage spell like Mind Blast or Shadow Word: Death to trigger Spirit Tap as often as possible to keep our mana high. Even if you are a DPS you can easily help out your other party members in danger by applying Power Word: Shield, Renew and other offheals to them when necessary.

You may be expected to be the healer for your group as Priest is traditionally thought to be. Keep Renew on players that are actively taking damage and refresh Power Word: Shield when players get low HP or for spikey damage to have a break to cast another heal. Warriors and bears still generate rage when shielded in WoW: Forever so no need to worry about that. Use the efficient Heal to top people off, otherwise if its an emergency use Flash Heal, you might pull threat when casting these big heals so pay attention in case you need to Fade your threat off. While people are healthy and you have Renew active, you can still wand for free damage, make sure to stay high mana in case of an emergency.

The last notable change will be how you use Mind Blast with its nature of generating high threat, try to only cast it when the mob is low hp so you can finish it off quickly if you do pull threat, otherwise you will most likely have to press Fade shortly after casting it if it even helps, and it may not be worth casting at all if it means pulling threat off of your tank on pull. This is completely fine as our DoT's and wanding with Wand Specialization will do a lot of damage.

Gearing / Stat Priority

For easy decision making, aim for these stats:

Spellpower > Spirit > Intellect > Stamina > Crit > Hit > Haste > MP5

We will generally want a balance of Spellpower, Intellect, and Spirit, which should be easy with the way caster items are designed and which pieces have Spellpower, but just in case try to at least have some of these three stats.

Any piece of gear from a dungeon with these stats will most likely be an upgrade assuming its on-level, running dungeons while leveling will give you the best gear and give you the most power, make sure you pick up every dungeon quest to get all the rewards.

1. Spellpower

  • Directly increases our damage and healing, with a bunch of new Spellpower items in WoW: Forever, Blizzard has reduced our base spell damage to compensate, so gathering Spellpower to empower our abilities is a top priority.

2. Spirit

  • Increases Health and Mana regeneration, with talents such as Spirit Tap and Meditation, Spirit becomes really valuable at increasing our uptime between pulls and less time drinking. Health only regenerates naturally outside of combat and we have plenty of heals so that portion of spirit is not as valuable.

3. Intellect

  • Increases our max Mana by 15 for every 1 point of Intellect, allowing us to constantly cast for longer before running out of Mana. Intellect also grants us a small amount of spell crit, a good damage increase given the critical damage bonus from Shadowform and that our DoT's can crit now in WoW: Forever.

4. Stamina

  • Increases our health pool by 10 for every 1 point of Stamina, the reason this is lower on the list is because of our unique buffs such as Power Word: Fortitude and Power Word: Shield artificially inflating our health pool. We still want some Stamina since we are wearing Cloth gear with low Armor, but we can get away with having lower Stamina than other classes.

5. Crit / Hit / Haste / MP5

  • These stats will be very uncommon while leveling, its not worth thinking about too heavily. If you do have the option however it would be Crit > Hit > Haste > MP5, with Crit being ontop because of insane synergy with Shadowform. MP5 being last because of our strong talents Spirit Tap and Meditation giving us a lot more Mana regeneration value from spirit instead of flat MP5.

Professions

Professions received a major overhaul in WoW: Forever, while no professions are necessary it is highly incentivized to pick the professions listed at your earliest convenience, keeping up with them while waiting for a campfire, boat, zeppelin, dungeon group, or quest mob is very easy and without knowledge of endgame professions yet, we can only assume there will also be powerful Bind on Pickup items that you must craft yourself.

Enchanting - Most important early game profession, allowing us to craft Lesser Magic Wand and Greater Magic Wand very early on synergizes with Wand Specialization and will carry our damage in the early levels. These wands do more damage than other wands at the same level range, you will also be able to craft some Wizard oils for additional spellpower but these are less important.

Tailoring - With the profession overhaul, this profession gets many powerful blue items, some of them will require you to go out of your way to craft and are generally not worth it but they are a big power spike if you feel like it. Being able to craft early 6-8 slot bags is also useful if you haven't gotten any already. This is also the only crafting profession that does not need an accompanying gathering profession to craft the items since we can just loot cloth from enemies, allowing us to keep Enchanting as well.

Cooking - In Forever, Cooking becomes massively more powerful as most cooked food gives us a food buff that grants an additional 5% experience from kills for the entire duration, you can cook these items as soon as you learn cooking as early as cooking level 10.

Fishing - Accompanying our Cooking profession with fish with an "infinite" supply can be useful, but is rarely worth the time spent fishing, I wouldn't worry about this too much.

First Aid - Useful to heal ourselves without spending mana, however, both First Aid and Tailoring heavily use cloth and it will probably be too difficult to upkeep both of these, and you should focus on Tailoring instead.

Consumables

  • As mentioned before almost any food from Cooking will grant a 5% experience boost from kills, learning this even at level 1 Cooking can be a massive benefit.
  • Every 10 levels starting at level 5 there is new Food and Water purchasable from vendors and Innkeepers, it is worth buying each new tier of water to minimize time drinking and recover our large mana pool, food is not needed since we can heal ourself.
  • Health Potions and Mana Potions are worth keeping whenever you find them, they can save you from a corpse run or a wipe in a dungeon and vendor for very little, meaning if you really need the bag space for something important you can delete an old potion anyway.
  • Swiftness Potion when accidentally pulling too many mobs can be a life saver, worth having a couple of these.

Worrying too much about consumables can take up a lot of bag space and its more worth while to use that space for more water or quest items.

Tips & Tricks

Skip Training Spells

As you level up, gold can be scarce resource and you can save a lot of gold by not training spells you don't need until later, we'll go over some here but you should train every spell eventually, any spells not listed here we recommend you train and upgrade.

Holy Fire - With a 3.5s cast time and all of the Shadow damage talents we will eventually take, the only upside this spell has is its mana efficiency over Mind Blast.

Smite - As soon as you equip a wand, we will never be casting this spell since the wand with Wand Specialization is just incredibly more efficient, you can stop upgrading this as early as rank 2.

Fear Ward - Although a powerful tool, fears are uncommon enough and unpredictable enough while leveling that this can be worth skipping temporarily.

Mind Vision - Fun ability with its only use being scouting rares in dungeons, won't serve much, if any, use while leveling.

Mana Burn - Has a 3s cast time and spending that time on trying to burn all the enemy mobs mana will almost never be worth it, can be useful in PvP though.

Shadow Protection - While this can be very helpful, not having it won't be a big deal and can be skipped to save gold if needed.

Resurrection - Training this initially is very important to revive team members, but past rank 1 all you get is more health and mana on the revived target, if you're strapped for gold this can be an easy spell to skip upgrading.

Shackle Undead - Training at rank 1 unlocks most of this spells potential, with spell rank increasing duration by 10s per rank, can help save gold by not training upgrades.

Macros

Mouseover Macro

#showtooltip
/use [@mouseover][]Power Word: Shield

Replace Power Word: Shield with any spell name, this allows you to cast something on a unit without clicking on them to target, this macro will prioritize whatever is under your cursor to cast, if nothing is there it will cast normally. Omitting the spell rank from the spell name means it will always cast at max rank.

Wand Macro

#showtooltip
/use !Shoot

Allows you to start wanding and not stop unless you press Escape or cast another ability, useful so you don't accidentally stop wanding, currently this is bugged and sometimes when you press it again, you will stop wanding, but it is unintended and hopefully will be fixed soon.

Cooldown Manager

New in WoW: Forever is the Cooldown Manager, a feature that came from modern versions of WoW allows us to track buffs and cooldowns. Most importantly, you can add sounds and visuals when spells become available to use, or sounds when specific buffs are applied or removed from your character.

This feature can be an amazing tool if used properly to have a sound remind you to upkeep all of your buffs or a sound to know when your Power Word: Shield breaks. These visuals and sounds only show on the Cooldown Manager itself that you enable ingame, if its hidden, disabled, or the spell is removed from the Cooldown Manager it will not display the visuals or play any sounds. Definitely worth looking into though.
