Overview

Elemental Shaman is a strong ranged caster, wielding Fire and Lightning to do large burst damage with a combination of offensive cooldown Elemental Mastery and Lava Burst, with passives which amplify damage - especially critical hits - Elemental Fury and Lightning Overload. Elemental Shaman also bring strong PvP utility through a ranged interrupt on short cooldown Earth Shock, and Grounding Totem totem to counter casters.

Elemental Shaman also bring significant utility through totems to their raid/party adding damage (i.e., Windfury Totem, Flametongue Totem ) or increasing defenses (i.e., Grounding Totem, Nature Resistance Totem, Frost Resistance Totem).

Elemental is known for big burst with crits, but also for burning through mana. WoW Forever has added mana back options for Elemental Shaman to make sure they can endure a long boss fight through Mindfulness, and Water Shield. Also adding hit rating stat to make it easier to get the required hit rating needed for raiding Tidal Focus.

DISCLAIMER: This is based on beta testing up to level 30, and is assuming certain item and gear at level 60. This will not include Legacy talent points, and has not been play tested based on the gear at 60. Further updates to be build will come in the future with upcoming game launch.

Guide Variants

TLDR: Maximizing single target damage and utility with Eye of the Storm and Earthbound, while taking hit rating (Tidal Focus and mana-back talents (Mindfulness Water Shield Totemic Focus).

Major talents to take notice:

  • Elemental Mastery 3minute offensive cooldown
  • Elemental Fury increasing critical damage by +100%
  • Lightning Overload repeating casted abilities
  • Lava Burst major offensive cooldown single target
  • Mana efficiency via:
    • Water Shield giving mana back on critical spell or being hit
    • Mental Quickness generating manage back while casting
    • Totemic Focus

Gameplay & Rotation

Before combat:

  1. Flametongue Weapon is on your weapon
  2. Water Shield to increase mana regeneration on critical spell hits

Single Target Rotation:

  1. Searing Totem in advance, along with utility totems for your group
  2. Cast Flame Shock the target
  3. Cast Elemental Mastery and any Racial (i.e., Berserking)
  4. Cast Lava Burst if available
  5. Cast Lightning Bolt as filler
  6. With Elemental Focus procs prioritize Lava Burst/Earth Shock, otherwise Lightning Bolt since these are usually higher mana cost.

Downrank casting is expected for Lightning bolt, but without further testing of spellpower coefficients, Elemental Focus proc chance, and mana efficiency, we will hold off on specific recommendations after launch.

AOE Rotation:

  1. Place Magma Totem for AOE damage
  2. Cast Fire Nova to AOE, on cooldown
  3. Cast Elemental Mastery and any Racial (i.e., Berserking)
  4. Cast Chain Lightning , until Elemental Mastery buff expires
  5. Cast Fire Nova on cooldown
  6. Cast Lava Burst if Chain Lightning and Fire Nova on cooldown
  7. With Elemental Focus procs prioritize Chain Lightning , then Lava Burst / Fire Nova

If you need range use Earthbind Totem, especially with Earthbound, to give yourself range.

Stat Priority

Gearing in WoW Forever has changed with increased amount of gear with Spell Power.

Priority: Hit > Spellpower > Critical Chance > Intellect > MP5 > Spirit

  1. Hit Chance: This is a priority for raiding, to reach 17% hit rating total to hit raid bosses at level 63. Which is why Tidal Focus can be so valuable.
  2. Spell Power: This is the most important stat to maximize damage of all casted abilities
  3. Critical Strike Chance: A less common stat, but increasing critical chance increases the value of Water Shield
  4. Intellect: Increases mana pool, and increases spell critical strike chance, this does not give spell power!
  5. Mana-per-5: Increases mana generation directly even when casting
  6. Spirit: Increases mana regeneration when not casting for 5-seconds, or if you have Mindfulness

If you find yourself not having enough mana for boss fights, or for dungeon pulls then you can increase mana-per-5 stat, Intellect to increase your mana pool or Spirit to increase mana regeneration.

Suggested Races

For Shaman, there are multiple strong options for Races. I have listed these in order of which I think are strongest.

Horde

Troll (S-tier)

Strongest of the horde in offensive capabilities, though not as durable as other races (Tauren/Orc)

  • Berserking is a strong haste buff and offensive cooldown, stacking this with potentially Elemental Mastery will likely be an insane combinations for AOE burst
  • Beast Slaying giving +5% against beasts will surely add value in the future
  • Rapid Regeneration is decent while leveling, though does not help with mana
  • Regeneration is nice for leveling but generally not too valuable

Orc (A-tier)

Due to recent updates during Beta, Orc is still strong, particularly for PvP but for PvE they were slightly nerfed:

  • Blood Fury being a 3minute cooldown for increased damage for attack and spellpower is strong for Shaman
  • Shatter Curse is a great cleanse and slight increase defensive against magic
  • Savage increasing critical strike chance by 1% overall which is great for Shaman with Elemental Fury
  • Hardiness is not use valuable in leveling or PvE, only really PvP

Tauren (A-tier)

Recently buffed Tauren brings multiple offensive, defensive and utility racials:

  • The strongest stat racial of all Endurance giving 5% hp, but more importantly 2% critical strike bonus for damage and healing is very significant since critical strike is a priority for Elemental
  • War Stomp a great 2 second AOE stun, now on a 1.5 minute cooldown
  • Plainsrunning a quality of life movements speed buff which will help before we get Ghost Wolf at level 20
  • Cultivation is only for professions/gold.

Skyborne (A-tier)

The new WoW Forever race, with strong base stat buffs, utility and mobility. It is the most unproven and with only +3% haste and dependency on fighting elementals for +5% it is unclear how strong they will be.

  • 3% Haste from Wind Blessed , helping out cast and melee speed
  • Elemental Insight for +5% damage against elementals, though it is unclear how often we will face elementals
  • Skysight giving movement speed as a nice quality of life
  • Walk on Air allowing for jumping off cliffs in style

Alliance

Dwarf (A-tier)

The only option on Alliance, bringing strong offensive damage passives:

  • Earth Fury 2% critical strike bonus for damage and healing is very significant since critical strike is a priority for Elemental
  • Big Game Hunter giving +5% against beasts will surely add value in the future
  • Stoneform is a great defensive and cleanse which can be useful defensively
  • Find Treasure is only for fun/gold.

Consumables

Disclaimer: Consumable section will be significantly revamped with launch of the game and all items discovered.

Buff food focusing on:

  • 22 Spellpower Nightfin Soup, or
  • 20 Intellect buff
    • Soaring Pamplona
    • Bat Hachee
    • Prehistoric Pulled Raptor

Health potions can help you avoid death to allow you to keep leveling:

  • Search "Healing Potion" in the auction house to find which is cheapest and/or at your level. You can take lower level potions if cheap to consume very frequently.

Mana potions reduce time between mobs and are usually very cheap:

  • Search "Mana Potion" in the auction house to find which is cheapest and/or at your level. You can take lower level potions if cheap to consume very frequently.

Consumables increasing stats for more damage and survivability:

  • Level 30+ items:
    • Greater Mageblood Elixir giving 20 mana every 5 seconds for 30 minutes.
    • Greater Arcane Elixir This gives you 35 Spell Power for 30 minutes.
    • Elixir of Sages buffing Spirit and critical rate by 2% for 30 minutes.
    • Major Spellblasting Potion being a 30 second potion during your burst
  • Expected at level 60:
    • Flask of Supreme Power flask for PvE
    • Brilliant Wizard Oil to enhance your weapon

Professions

For 60, the following are recommended options for professions:

  1. Enchanting , which is very easy to level compared to other versions of the game, has a Polished Driftwood Icon from Merchant Favors which come from completing crates like Waylaid Crate: Apprentice Herbs (for example). Since this is Bind on Pickup, you can drop Enchanting after getting this item.
  2. Alchemy / Herbalism , in WoW Forever there are significantly more herbalism nodes generally, this will allow you to be self sufficient and create potions, and elixirs as needed to be self sufficient.
  3. Leatherworking / Skinning - with skinning being the easiest way to gather materials and there being more crafting recipes than ever this can be a good combination and relatively easy to be self sufficient.
  4. First Aid is a useful to use the cloth from mobs, and recover health without spending mana on Healing Wave to recover.

Campfire Buffs

In the event your group does not have these buffs, for dungeons and raids get these buffs to increase your damage and sustain through the fights:

  • Mana Well giving mana regeneration instead of Blessing of Wisdom from paladins.
  • Incense Candle giving Intellect, instead of Arcane Intellect from mages.
  • Fish Bowl giving +8% to all stats, instead of Blessing of Kings from paladins.
  • Camp Chair increasing crit rate by 2% instead of Moonkin Form.
  • Faction Banner increasing Spirit instead of Divine Spirit from priests.

Tips & Tricks

Read these tips and follow these for a seamless leveling experience:

  1. Maximize mana mob to mob: The most important way to level smoothly as Elemental is optimizing mana, it is critical to be aware of how mana generation works in WoW Forever. You must stop casting for 5 seconds, which will trigger mana to start generation. This means you once mobs are very low (except for bosses), try to finish the mob with melee, or allow Searing Totem and Flame Shock to finish the mob.
  2. The Relic slot will be empty for a while, unless you pick Enchanting and craft Polished Driftwood Icon, the only accessible option you should seek out early is Totem of Charged Flames which will come from Fire Totem quest.
  3. Mana tip: Totemic Recall's 25% refund should be used if moving away from where you place totems to get mana back.
  4. Use Rank1 Earth Shock for interrupting mobs, if conserving mana.

Totem Utility

Preset for Call of the Elements preset for maximum group utility (likely defaults):

  • Air = Windfury Totem
  • Water = Mana Spring Totem
  • Fire = Flametongue Totem for team utility, or Searing Totem for single target damage
  • Earth = Strength of Earth Totem

What changed for all totems

  • Longer reach and duration. Most totems now last 5 minutes and reach 30 yards. The exceptions keep short timers: Searing Totem(30–55 sec depending on rank), Magma Totem(20 sec), Stoneclaw Totem (15 sec), Earthbind Totem and Grounding Totem (45 sec), and Mana Tide Totem (12 sec).
  • Totem Bar sets. Call of the Elements (20), Call of the Ancestors(30) and Call of the Spirits (40) each are presets to drop up to four totems from their own saved set, in one 3 second cast.
  • Totemic Recall (20) Totemic Recall, picks your totems back up and refunds 25% of each one’s mana.
  • Totemic Projection (22) Totemic Projection moves your active totems to a spot up to 30 yards away.
  • You still need the totem items. Every totem spell requires the item from individual class quests for its element.
