Marksmanship Tree:
We start the tree off STRONG with
Lethal Attacks 5/5. This is one of the most powerful talents in the game, as it gives us +5% Crit to everything. Ranged, Melee, Dots, and even our pets. Most talent builds for all specs will be taking this talent at one point or another.
Next, we make our way to a new addition to the tree
Careful Aim 5/5. This talent helps us stack attack power based on our Intellect, Making "of the Falcon" gear incredibly powerful for us with very little competition in the auction house! Marksmanship appears to be going for a future raid spot as a top competitor of ranged raid dps, and to fuel our barrage of sparkly shots we will need a large mana pool!
Lone Wolf is next up, increasing our overall damage by 20% when we do not have a pet active. As it stands right now in the final week of beta, this only works when your pet is dismissed or despawned, not when the pet is dead. Historically, this talent has had a lot of trouble keeping track of when your pet is around, but not having to micromanage a pet that may not even be a damage increase is definitely an increase to our overall dps. For the sake of math, if you did 100 damage in a fight, but you had
Lone Wolf, you would do 120 damage. If you did 120 with your pet active, 20% of your damage would be 24. So, unless you can guarantee enough uptime with a high damage pet,
Lone Wolf will generally pull ahead. Future tuning can change this. This also does not mean you will not have a pet you're capable of calling. Pets got a lot of changes coming into Forever, and there's quite a few who's utility could be helpful in a pinch, such as the Spider's
Web ability.
Rapid Killing 2/2 brings our
Rapid Fire cooldown to only 3 minutes! This means that practically whenever we want, we will have it. Be sure to layer it with any other damage buffs you may have from trinkets or racials like
Elune's Light or
Berserking. This also gives us a buff to our next shots after killing an enemy, great for large pulls and dungeons!
For this 23-24 slot, I have put down
Hawk Eye, however, these points are completely dealers choice. We just need to spend 2 points to advance down the tree further, and later we will have 1 more free point, so we could max this or even
Improved Stings to 3/3 if we so choose. Theres also plenty of value in 3/5
Efficiency and even 3/5
Improved Concussive Shot, particularly on pvp servers.
Now onto the fourth row, we grab
Mortal Shots 5/5. We will be critting a lot due to
Lethal Attacks and our high Agility, so this ones a no-brainer.
Scatter Shot 1/1 is a Marksmanship pillar. While it does not do very much damage, it does offer us an instant response to our greatest weakness. An enemy closing the gap will lock us out of using our ranged abilities, and because we tend to stack offensive stats, we will be a relatively glass cannon type build.
Scatter Shot into
Freezing Trap is a combo as old as time, allowing you to create enough distance to start shooting from a much safer position!
Scatter Shot can also be used as a pseudo-interrupt if a particularly dangerous spell is about to go off. Personally, I also love to use this to peel aggressive mobs off of players being chased, if we happen to cross paths. :^)
Rapid Recuperation 2/2 is another new addition to the tree. This allows us to regenerate mana while casting, made even more valuable if we consume
Rapid Killing. This also makes Spirit as a stat more important to us, but as for right now it is unclear how much of it we will need.
Trueshot Aura is a 30 minute ranged attack power buff for you and your entire raid! We should be keeping this up at all times, but more importantly we need this to unlock
Sniper Shot later!
Now, at Level 34 we have that final free point we were talking about previously with
Hawk Eye. Again, you could put this into
Improved Stings,
Improved Concussive Shot,
Efficiency, or even a single point in
Barrage. Dealers choice, we just need to make it down the tree.
Ranged Weapon Specialization 5/5 is a no-brainer. 5% damage always relevant, and we will be stacking a few bonuses like this which all work in tandem for even more damage.
And Lastly in the Marksmanship tree
Sniper Shot, with a 4 second cast time, this CRANKS damage from a farther distance (10 yards) than your usual shots. But the fun doesn't stop there, your next 3 shots ALSO benefit from this increased range, allowing you to burst down a target from a distance before they ever see it coming!
Now we dip into the other trees, starting by taking
Improved Tracking 5/5. This is another damage modifier to add to our ever increasingly heavier bucket of damage modifiers, as long as we are tracking whichever mob type we are fighting.
I have
Entrapment 5/5 here, but honestly you could pick anything you prefer.
Entrapment did receive a slight nerf by only proccing on the initial detonation of traps, rather than on any effect of the trap, but a 5 second root should not be slept on, especially when our whole kit revolves around not being touched.
Surefooted 3/3 is the reason we go down this tree, 3% hit is too valuable to pass up. As a hunter, we will generally only need 5% to hit any raid bosses, and at this level we are likely to be starting to gather our pre-raid bis. This lightens the burden of that almost entirely!
These last 7 points I have in
Deadly Aspects 5/5 (from the beast mastery tree) and
Clever Traps 2/2 (next to
Surefooted) However, you could likely spend these however you feel! I have found in my personal testing that
Deadly Aspects proc happens quite frequently with only 2/5 and 3/5 points in it. The attack speed bonus it gives is always 30%, more points only increases the likelihood of it proccing. 5/5 Would make it the highest chance for full uptime. For me, it helps to think of these proc chances as a fraction, rather than a %. At 1/5
Deadly Aspects, it has a 2% chance, or 1/50 shots will proc, but at 2/5
Deadly Aspects it is 4%, which is 1/25, then 3/5 at 6% would be around 1 out of 17ish, 4/5 at would be 1 in 12.5 shots, 5/5 would be 1 in 10 shots, which is a lot lower of a jump than the difference in 1/5 and 2/5, but also providing the highest chance for uptime. Season to taste.
Clever Traps can help you kite better, but in a dps dungeon or raid scenario you would be better off with 2 points in
Barrage
Gameplay & Rotation
New to Forever, our shots will not interrupt our autoshot timer! This means that our "rotation, is more of a juggle between cooldowns and rescources that we can narrow down to a priority system.
1. From afar, with
Aspect of the Hawk and
Trueshot Aura active we can apply
Hunter's Mark. Make sure to have the correct
Improved Tracking on as well, if talented! True snipers do have a lot of setup involved, so thematically this all makes sense. You can also send your pet in, if you're not talented into
Lone Wolf
2. Cast
Sniper Shot if talented, if below level 40 cast
Aimed Shot
3. Apply instant shots
Serpent Sting and
Arcane Shot, Remember that if you previously eliminated an enemy with
Serpent Sting active you will have a
Rapid Killing, so any dot damage left over from a mob dying isn't truly wasted.
Rapid Recuperation can also be applied here, which is gas in the tank for our array of painful and sparkly bullets.
4. Maintain distance. You can drop a
Frost Trap,
Freezing Trap, or any trap with
Entrapment talented prior to the pull to help maintain distance from your target and give you time to create more if they close the gap. Learning how to strafe and shoot will become essential for open world kiting, I will have a newer tutorial on my youtube.com/robcat94 page soon, but as for now, the new players guide video on my channel does go over the basics, only the 0.5 second wind-up was not implemented when this was recorded.
5.
Wing Clip and run if they get too close! Our damage budget is primarily stacked into our ranged weapon, so we must try to keep distance at all times!
6. Repeat! Leveling is a marathon, not a race. Be sure to judge whether its better to consume rapid killing now by starting the next pull, or sit, eat, and drink to prepare for an even tougher enemy. This all comes with practice and experience!
Gear
Your ranged weapon will be the biggest factor while leveling! Maintaining upgrades here will be essential to leveling speed! Luckily, there are some great quest rewards, profession items, and dungeon drops we can acquire with little to no competition! Generally, we prefer a slower weapon, as this will increase the damage of our shot abilities more than a fast one, and also will be far more ammo efficient!
Rough Boomstick at level 5 is always my first stop, you can craft this early on with engineering, and will likely be the first green item you will equip. Make sure you learn how to use guns if you don't have the skill already! You can learn it for 10 silver in Ironforge or Thunderbluff at the weapon master.
Hunting Bow is another cheap option that may be acquired from the auction house, but not entirely necessary.
Militia Bow is picked up from the rare books quest for alliance, likely your first elite quest out the gate.
Orcish Battle Bow is obtained for horde players from the centaurs bracers quest in the crossroads.
Barbaric Crossbow Drops from Oggleflint in RFC for horde players.
Venomstrike has been a crowd favorite among leveling hunters for years. A rare drop deep in wailing caverns, but the proc on it will take you very far.
In Duskwood, alliance have the option to do quests for the Nightwatch, culminating in a final reward of either a quiver or ammo pouch of your choosing. Pick your favorite! These kinds of bags also give you ranged attack haste, so Specializing early will maximise efficency while leveling.
Concealed Hand Crossbow Drops in the Stockades for alliance players.
Double-barreled Shotgun is an explosive option you can pick up in the auction house, however it may be more expensive as other classes will use it as a stat stick.
Naga Heartpiercer drops in BFD and has a fun proc, especially when leveling in a place with naga.
Master Hunter's Bow and
Master Hunter's Rifle are rewards from doing all the Hemet Nesingwary hunter quests. Incredibly tough to do, but technically can be done at level 30 and will last you a very long time. In beta, it was common for groups of 5 level 30 hunters to group up for this together, the other rewards along the way aren't too bad either!
Verdant Keeper's Aim is a reward from the Mara dungeon quest. This will likely be all you need all the way up to 60 if you're mainly leveling through world content. There will be some competitive upgrades in the later dungeons as well.
Stat Priority
Stat priority got a slight change up for us in WoW Forever!
Agility is still our number one, as it is just a heavily loaded stat. It gives us Ranged Attack Power and crit chance. Not to mention armor and dodge as well!
Intellect climbs up to second! this gives us attack power and increases our mana pool by 15 per point!
Spirit also gains additional benefit from
Rapid Recuperation, the longer we can keep our mana high, the more damage we can send!
Stamina gives us 10 health per point, while not important for our damage, you will take damage from time to time, and its important to not lose any time by a negligent death! The most important health point is the last one!
And lastly, Strength. While this does give us melee attack power, we will mostly trying to prevent any melee combat, so generally this stat is wasted in marksmanship.
Suggested Races
ALL the available races for hunter's can do well, it is important to pick the race you like the most. You will be spending a lot of time with your character, and you will not make it if you don't enjoy the vibe they put out!
That being said, there are a few stand out options.
Night Elf gets 3 massive abilities natively to synergize with hunter. That being
Elune's Light as a burst cooldown,
Shadowmeld which can be used as a pseudo
Feign Death or to remain hidden around tough enemies (synergizes with
Prowl from Cats),and a 2% move speed
Quickness increase that stacks with other move speed bonuses. This means our
Aspect of the Cheetah can be 32% instead of 30% and also means
Enchant Boots - Minor Speed will have even more of a benefit early on!
Troll gain
Berserking, a powerful haste active that can be used on top of our other offensive cooldowns. Great for getting a quicker
Aimed Shot sent! Additionally they have
Regeneration and
Rapid Regeneration, both which keep us topped up on health. We wont be taking much damage in general, but we also lack any of our own healing, so this is still a plus.
Beast Slaying is also another damage modifier we can add to our ever growing list of modifiers. People sleep on this racial, but the reality is we will be fighting a lot of beasts on our journey to 60, even more so if we take
Skinning and
Leatherworking while leveling. There are also quite a large amount of raid bosses in classic labeled as Beasts.
Skyborne are suddenly a complete dark horse option to arise out of the latest beta build.
Wind Blessed received a massive buff, going from 1% haste to 3% haste. Haste is a very rare stat in the game, and hunters tend to get earliest access to it with things like the bonus from quivers,
Rapid Fire, and
Deadly Aspects. Trolls active ability gives them 10% on demand, 3% all the time is an insane value. Personally,
Walk on Air looks like one of the most fun abilities ever added to the game as well :^)
Consumables
We are uncertain of what exactly endgame consumables will look like, but as for right now keeping your weapon
Accurate Scope 'd will be high value, as well as keeping any food for your pets, and water for downtime while leveling.
Professions
There are a few options that stick out for leveling Hunters!
Mining/
Engineering are my personal favorite from the years played this game. Allowing you to craft flamboyant items like
Green Tinted Goggles and
Mechanical Squirrel Box early on, as well as guns and grenades! Coming into WoW Forever, there have been a few changes. Grenades now have different versions that non engineers can use, which both gives us an avenue for making gold, but also diminishes the exclusivity of having grenades. Also to note, Tracking Minerals for mining WILL take up your ability to track any other creature when used, and you will not do 5% more damage to any mining nodes you encounter, so you will tediously have to toggle this on and off to maintain
Improved Tracking
Skinning/
Leatherworking in tandem work great, with
Track Beasts you can carve out a path and farm out whatever you may need!
Leatherworking also got some massive buffs in the form of some special Bind On Pickup recipes you can craft for yourself, such as
Brawler's Leather Hood
Enchanting is also viable! Allowing you to grind any unwanted greens or quest rewards into valuable dust that you can use to either enchant your own gear, or sell on the auction house for profit!
Cooking,
Fishing, and
First Aid should all be taken regardless.
Cooking gives you a massive 5% exp buff from most recipes now, completely invaluable on your journey to 60!
Fishing has become an even better skill, not only for its synergy with
Cooking, as a great form of raw gold early on in the game. If you're ever short on money for a few skills, go find a pond! Also, plenty of pets can eat your unwanted fish(:
First Aid got some changes in WoW Forever as well! Most of the standard recipes are requiring herbs, however these herbs are always insanely cheap in the auction house, and we lack any other way to heal ourselves. Keep this leveled!
Tips & Tricks
Your ranged attacks work off a different hit table than melee, and you can often be just as effective at killing higher level mobs if the need arises! While not super efficient, don't let someone higher level diminish your value when grouping with people higher level than you!
If you're in a dungeon, you can use
Feign Death as a threat wipe, given you have good distance from your target! We do a lot of upfront burst that is hard for tanks to manage early on. Getting in the rhythm of this will help you get invited back!
Often when kiting,
Aspect of the Cheetah will be your best option. If you get hit, you will be dazed, but many mobs have a higher that 100% move speed, but not quite as high as the 130% from
Aspect of the Cheetah. It takes practice!
Learn to kite! My personal favorite part of this spec. When walking backwards, you gain a massive move speed penalty, which wont help you at all while kiting! Using strafe, you can angle your self so that your are facing the mob sideways, then strafing the other way you can run and kite at full run speed!
Get a ranged swing timer addon! Weapon Swing Sixxfixx is working in WoW Forever, and this will help you time the wind-ups when you need to remain still for 0.5 seconds to get shots off while kiting!
I make hunter content at youtube.com/robcat94 and will continue to make guides both here and there, come say hello!
Thanks for checking out my guide, stay safe out there!!
