Professions give you something useful to do with the materials you find while exploring Azeroth. Some let you gather resources, while others turn those resources into gear, consumables and other items. You can learn two primary professions and all 3 Secondary Professions, so choosing a gathering profession alongside a craft that uses its materials is an easy way to get started. WoW Forever is also adding new recipes across the professions.
WoW Forever Professions Explained
Every Profession in WoW Forever
Gathering professions
Lets you collect materials as you explore, such as herbs, ore and leather. You can sell those materials or use them to supply a crafting profession.
Herbalism
Herbalism lets you collect herbs as you travel. Alchemists use them to make potions and other consumables, so it pairs naturally with Alchemy. It is a good choice if you enjoy gathering materials while you quest.
Mining
Mining lets you collect ore from mineral veins and smelt it into bars. Blacksmiths and Engineers use those materials for many of their crafts. If you would rather gather than craft, you can also sell the materials you find.
Skinning
Skinning lets you collect leather and hides from suitable creatures after they have been looted. Leatherworkers use those materials to make gear and other items. It is a convenient profession if you are already fighting beasts as you level.
Crafting professions
Turn materials into useful items, including gear, potions, enchants and gadgets. Pairing a craft with a gathering profession can help you collect what you need while levelling.
Alchemy
Alchemy turns herbs into potions, elixirs and other useful consumables. It suits players who want supplies they can use throughout their journey. Pairs well with Herbalism.
Blacksmithing
Blacksmithing uses metal bars to make weapons, armour and other crafted items. It is a natural choice if you like making equipment, especially when paired with Mining.
Enchanting
Enchanting improves gear by adding magical effects. Enchanters can also disenchant suitable items to obtain materials for their crafts. It is useful across different classes, though you will need a steady supply of items and materials to level it.
Engineering
Engineering uses metal and other materials to make gadgets, devices and useful tools. Pick it if you enjoy experimenting with items that do more than simply provide equipment stats. Mining helps supply many of its materials.
Leatherworking
Leatherworking turns leather and hides into wearable gear and other crafted items. Skinning is its most straightforward partner, since you can gather many of the materials yourself while questing.
Tailoring
Tailoring uses cloth dropped by enemies to make cloth gear, bags and other items. Because cloth is collected from enemy drops, you do not need a dedicated gathering profession to supply it. That gives you flexibility with your second primary profession.
Secondary Professions
Secondary professions are extra skills you can learn alongside your main professions. They give you useful things to do with materials you find while playing, such as cooking food, catching fish, and making bandages. You don’t have to choose between them, so they’re worth picking up as you level.
First Aid
First Aid uses cloth to make bandages. Bandages provide an extra way to heal yourself between fights, which can be particularly handy while levelling, You can also use First Aid to make healing potions.
Fishing
Fishing lets you catch fish from bodies of water. Fish can provide ingredients for Cooking, making the two skills a good match if you enjoy gathering your own supplies.
A note on Lockpicking
You may see it in Mobalytics profession filters, but it is a Rogue skill, not a profession you choose in one of your two primary profession slots.
If you are new and cannot decide, start with Herbalism + Alchemy, Mining + Blacksmithing, Mining + Engineering, or Skinning + Leatherworking. Each pairing lets you gather materials for the things you want to make.
