Enhance
Shaman has gotten a massive glow-up in Forever, becoming one of the smoothest levelers, having some of the highest damage output, and looks to be a very solid endgame contender thus far. Here I'll go over everything you need to know to optimize your leveling journey.
Why Enhance?
Even if you plan to play Ele/Resto at max level, I would still highly recommend leveling as Enhance for the following reasons:
- Very strong burst damage via
Stormstrike
Earth Shock
Windfury Weapon
-
Improved Ghost Wolf is extremely good for traversal & minimizing downtime
- Less mana intensive than Ele/Resto
- Can tank low level dungeons
- Synergizes well with any group/class
- Enhance was already a good leveler, it's only received buffs relative to vanilla
Changes/New Additions
Fire Nova is tied to your currently active fire totem and will pulse in a 10yd range from it
Improved Ghost Wolf lets you use wolf indoors now which is insane QoL
Stormstrike available as early as level 25, and is an 8s CD rather than 12
Improved Stormstrike provides 50% mana regen which is massive for uptime, and if you dodge/parry you'll reset the CD
Windfury Totem stacks with weapon enchants and is a static buff
Mental Quickness now converts int->AP
Spirit Weapons is a new talent that allows you to parry and helps a lot with threat
Maelstrom Weapon is new, makes
Lightning Bolt a rotational ability
Rage of the Farseer is a new capstone that basically gives you a personal bloodlust (albeit a bit weaker) on a 3m CD
Water Shield gives 2% mana per globe when hit, or when you land a crit, helping immensely with mana sustain
Totemic Projection let's you move your active totems while
Call of the Elements will call all totems that you select but with a clunky 3s cast time.
All totem buffs are now raid wide
Overview
Guide Variants
This version opts for grabbing
Mindfulness &
Water Shield as a priority after getting
Improved Stormstrike to optimize uptime. More uptime = more damage overall. It's possible
Water Shield is unnecessary and slightly worse as you lose
Lightning Shield which is about 10% of your damage roughly, theoretically
Water Shield should account for that though, more testing is needed but nobody likes to drink and having infinite mana is sick.
Some guides out there recommend getting
Water Shield as soon as possible. DO NOT EVER DO THIS
this would mean delaying
Stormstrike until level 35 which I assure you will feel absolutely horrendous and you'll take 20+ seconds to kill each mob. You'll have better mana sustain, with nothing worthwhile to spend it on, and you wouldn't have
Improved Ghost Wolf for a while. No matter what, always get
Stormstrike ASAP.
Talents
Point Order:
- 5/5
Thundering Strikes - crit good! - 3/3
Mental Dexterity - you have baseline int + int from arcane int/campfire buff, and some gear here and there will have int on it, so this is a nice damage bump. Int will be 1/2 as much AP as strength, so gear with that in mind - 2/2
Improved Ghost Wolf - In theory these are 'wasted points' as they dont affect your damage output, but once you play with this talent you'll never want to play without it again. - 1/1
Shamanistic Focus Mana is annoying, this drastically reduces the cost of your shocks making them much more efficient. - 3/3
Elemental Weapons to buff our imbues - 1/3
Anticipation to get down the tree, this can also be
Ancestral Knowledge if you prefer - 1/1
Stormstrike - our single biggest power spike - 4/5
Flurry for attack speed and to progress in the tree - 2/2
Improved Stormstrike for guaranteed permanent 50% mana regen and free resets on
Stormstrike - 1/1
Spirit Weapons for parry, to reset
Stormstrike CD and provide more defense - 5/5
Tidal Focus in the
Restoration tree for hit chance & to progress the tree to grab - 3/3
Mindfulness this 50% mana regen should stack with
Improved Stormstrike and drastically improve our uptime - At this stage it's uncertain to me whether it's best to put 3 more points into
Restoration to grab
Water Shield, or if your uptime would already be sufficient, and you'd be better off progressing the
Enhancement tree to grab
Maelstrom Weapon - this requires further testing, which I'll do on launch and update here, but for now I think
Water Shield is guaranteed to feel good, while
Maelstrom Weapon may potentially be lackluster, and it's not really usable until you have 5/5 points into it - 2/5
Totemic Focus this is simply just the least trash of all the options - 1/1
Water Shield this should, in theory, give us near infinite mana to have the freedom to use our full toolkit, and to reduce downtime to nearly 0 - 5/5
Flurry - 2/2
Mental Quickness spell damage is quite weak on shaman atm but it's still a damage bump - 5/5
Maelstrom Weapon unfortunately useless until the 5th point, but should be a solid dps increase - 1/1
Rage of the Farseer personal bloodlust what more could you ask for - 5/5
Concussion only other option to increase damage - 3/3
Elemental Devastation perma 9% melee crit pretty much, fantastic for damage &
Flurry uptime

Weapons & Gear
Weapon: Any 2h'er with as much damage as humanly possible, the slower the better for
Stormstrike and
Windfury Weapon. If you're tanking you definitely want to use a shield and any good 1h'er you can find, otherwise I wouldn't use a shield+1h'er when questing imo
Nothing is remotely as important as your weapon, here are some worthwhile weapon options:
Suggested level | Faction | Weapon | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
12–15 | Horde |
| Hidden Enemies — Ragefire Chasm quest chain |
12–15 | Alliance |
| Old Ironforge Incursion — Hall of Thanes |
16–20 | Horde |
| The Wrath of Rath’mael — Ruins of Lordaeron |
17–21 | Horde |
| Leaders of the Fang — Wailing Caverns |
26–30 | Both |
| Prehistoric Prism (Alliance) / Earthen Echo (Horde) — Excavation Site: Wetlands |
28–32 | Alliance |
| Heart of Disruption — City of Dalaran |
28–32 | Horde |
| Heart of Disruption — City of Dalaran |
30+ with help; 37 independently | Both |
| Shaman class quest chain ending in The Tempest’s Weapons |
38–40 | Alliance | Bonebiter | In the Name of the Light — Scarlet Monastery |

Gearing
Whatever will net you the highest AP is typically best, but almost all stats are good for enhance.
1) Strength is our best stat as it gives 2 ap per point
2) Intellect is second best since it provides 1 ap per point, spell crit, and increases your total mana pool
3) Attack Power just view ap as strength cut in half
4) Agility is obviously good, it gives you crit for both attacks and spells, but per point it's less efficient
5) Spirit isn't useless as it improves your mp5 but I wouldn't make many gearing decisions around it
6) Spell Power is unfortunately quite weak since the spell power scaling for
Shaman spells is legitimately 1/2 as potent as it is for other classes, blizzard will likely change this but as it stands spell power is quite inefficient, especially because while questing the majority of your damage is via melee swings &
Stormstrike
If you have leatherworking there's some pretty good gear you can craft, otherwise I'd recommend purchasing 'of the gorilla' gear as it has int+strength which is extremely good for damage. Ideally don't run around with 0 stamina though, and just use whatever good quest+dungeon rewards you happen to get along the way. If you have a good weapon, you'll do good damage regardless.
Consumables
Consumables to go out of your way for: only buy if they're inexpensive
Longjaw Mud Snapper for 10 ap & 5% EXP bonus
The best available
Coarse Sharpening Stone /
Coarse Weightstone for your level
Health & Mana Potions
Elixir of Ogre Strength
Elixir of Wisdom
Scroll of Strength
Scroll of Intellect
Lesser Mageblood Elixir
Campfire Buffs
Mana Well for mp5 (Alchemy) >
Fish Bowl 8% Stats (Fishing) >
Lodestone melee AP (Mining) >
Sharpening Wheel strength (Blacksmithing) >
Incense Candle>
Camp Chair 2% crit (Skinning)
Camp Tent from leatherworking I would use on CD since it gives 5% rested xp (can't overlap with pre-existing rested xp)
Main Skills and Rotations
Mana efficiency is crucial for uptime To maximize uptime you want to only use mana efficient spells, and take advantage of the mp5 rule, where 5s after not casting a mana consuming spell you start your mana regeneration. Ideally you want to frontload your spellcasts upon pulling a mob so the majority of the time fighting you are regenerating mana, and finish them off by auto-attacking. Once we have 2/2
Improved Stormstrike and 3/3
Mindfulness you'll have 100% regen in combat so this won't be relevant anymore.
If you want more total damage at the cost of mana efficiency, just smash all your buttons following the priority list
Weapon Imbues
Prior to unlocking
Windfury Weapon at level 30, you'll use whichever rank of
Rockbiter Weapon or
Flametongue Weapon you trained recently. If you're NOT tanking, use
Flametongue Weapon. Once you get
Windfury Weapon it is significantly better than the other options.
1-10 Rotaton:
Pull with 2-3
Lightning Bolt casts
Use
Earth Shock on cooldown
Keep up
Lightning Shield
Open World Rotation 10-24
1)
Lightning Shield pre-pull
2)
Flame Shock to pull the mob - you can save your shock CD if the mob is a caster with a dangerous cast that you'd rather
Earth Shock
3) Drop
Searing Totem before entering melee range
4)
Fire Nova if there are 3+ targets
5)
Earth Shock on CD to kick or use for damage (if the target is already debuffed with
Flame Shock or is going to die soon)
Open World Rotation 25-60 (now that you have
Stormstrike)
1)
Lightning Shield pre-pull
2) Drop
Searing Totem before entering melee range
3)
Stormstrike on CD
4)
Fire Nova only if there are 3+ targets
5)
Earth Shock on CD
Lightning Bolt is your highest priority if you have 5
Maelstrom Weapon stacks
Use
Rage of the Farseer on cooldown or whenever you see fit
Dungeon Rotation:
When there are multiple targets, namely 3+
Fire Nova becomes our most mana efficient spell. If your mana recovery is low and you don't have much time to drink, you ideally pretty much only want to spend mana on
Fire Nova because it is so damage efficient. If you have extra mana to play with, use it at your discretion
1)
Searing Totem or
Flametongue Totem (if there's more than 1 extra melee)
2)
Fire Nova on CD
3)
Stormstrike every 15s for mana regen buff, or on CD if you have extra mana
4) AFK and auto attack for MP5
5)
Earth Shock if there is a cast that needs to be kicked aka
Fear or
Healing Touch etc, or for extra single target damage - if you're tanking you use
Earth Shock as a psuedo taunt
If there's more than 3 mobs that will survive for 15+ seconds use
Magma Totem keep in mind it's EXTREMELY mana intensive
Lightning Bolt is your highest priority if you have 5
Maelstrom Weapon stacks
Use
Rage of the Farseer on cooldown or whenever you see fit
Use
Windfury Totem if there's 1 other melee in the group, and you can swap your
Windfury Weapon to
Flametongue Weapon
Generally totems aren't worth the mana they cost outside of
Searing Totem. If you constantly drop totems you'll inevitably run out of mana and have less uptime, and the totems aren't powerful enough to warrant any downtime. If you have extra mana, or are fighting mobs in a static spot for over 40 seconds, perhaps fighting an elite, hard boss encounter etc, then I would consider using them.
Totemic Projection is too mana intensive to warrant placing totems regularly and moving them.
Utility & Totems
Windfury Totem great for dungeons, and potentially BiS for max damage output even when solo, since it can stack with other weapon imbues now, however it's very mana intensive. Perhaps usable once playing with
Water Shield but I'll have to test this
Grace of Air Totem is also great, but again, very mana intensive
Strength of Earth Totem is pretty weak at low levels, however it doesn't cost much mana and it has a 30 yard range, so it's not a bad idea to pre-place it. It's hardly a 2% damage increase.
Utility:
Earthbind Totem &
Frost Shock are great for kiting/slowing mobs or enemy players
Stoneclaw Totem is great if you pull too many mobs and need a bit more defense or an opportunity to heal
Tremor Totem is great to cleanse fear/sleep/charm effects. It ticks every 4s so if you anticipate yourself being feared drop it accordingly. Conversely if you see a teammate about to get feared, don't drop the totem pre-emptively as it ticks the moment you drop it, so it won't tick again for another 4s. Instead, wait for the fear cast to go off and make sure to not global lock yourself, and immediately drop it then to cleanse it instantly
Stoneskin Totem is good if your tank is a whimp or you need some DR fighting harder mobs
Mana Spring Totem will only give you the mana it costs back if you're near it for 20+ seconds
Healing Stream Totem is quite weak but it can help out a healer in dungeon scenarios
Cure Poison is great when fighting mobs that poison you obviously
Purge is great for griefing enemy players removing their buffs, or powerful buffs on npcs such as healing effects
Races
All are within a 1% DPS margin, so pick whatever you prefer, however my suggestions are as follows
Alliance:
Dwarf
Dwarf is the only playable Race if you want to play this class as Alliance.
Dwarf gets 1% global hit chance for damage,
Find Treasure which is mainly for flavor
Big Game Hunter which is niche but very strong against beasts, and lastly
Stoneform is an amazing defensive tool, especially in PvP scenarios
Horde:
Tauren or
Orc for PvP &
Troll for PvE IMO
Windshaper Skyborne >
Troll >
Orc >
Tauren (for raw dps) but personally I wouldn't ever play Skyborne because the only practical benefit is the 2% haste via
Wind Blessed which is purely single target dps, and the second you're fighting a beast
Troll becomes significantly better.
Orc gets
Blood Fury a powerful CD, and
Shatter Curse is quite valuable for magic DR/PvP, specifically against warlocks, and lastly
Hardiness being very solid for PvP as well
Troll gets
Berserking a decent cooldown,
Rapid Regeneration for a heal here and there,
Beast Slaying is solid when fighting beasts, and
Regeneration can help with HP sustain
Tauren gets
War Stomp which is a nice utility stun, great for PvP.
Plainsrunning is decent for 1-20 movement speed but doesn't stack with
Ghost Wolf, and
Endurance is solid for total HP also
Cultivation for flower stuff
Windshaper Skyborne gets
Wind Blessed
Skysight
Walk on Air

Macros
Stop casting to interrupt is niche but can be helpful here and there in case the target is casting a dangerous spell while you are in the middle of casting a
Healing Wave for instance
/stopcasting
/cast Earth Shock
Personally I use mouseover macro's for all of my shock's, making it easier to kick via
Earth Shock or multi-dot with
Flame Shock which is technically a dps increase, or
Frost Shock to quickly slow a target while kiting etc.
Earth Shock

/stopcasting
/cast [@mouseover, exists] Earth Shock; Earth Shock
Earth Shock rank 1 macro for mana efficiency if only using to interrupt

Flame Shock

Additionally I heal with mouseovers for obvious reasons
Lesser Healing Wave for quick in a pinch heals

Strengths And Weaknesses
- Very high damage that's super satisfying
- Entirely self sufficient & versatile
- An enormous amount of utility and group buffs via totems
- 1-40 feels fantastic with
Improved Ghost Wolf
- Can be mana intensive if you don't optimize around mana efficiency
- Can get unlucky with
Windfury Weapon
