Priest Leveling Guide by Yumytv

Overview

Priest is a cloth-wearing caster class that walks the line between shadowy demise and divine preservation. As the only class with two separate healing specializations in Holy and Discipline, priest has the most diverse and complete healing kit. Shadow is the DPS talent tree that combines powerful damage over time effects with group support. Priest offers a variety of different leveling strategies with varying amounts of damage and healing potential.

Although priest performs well in group scenarios - it is actually quite powerful as a solo leveler as well. Spirit Tap allows for incredible sustain instant cast spells like Power Word: Shield and Renew ensure you spend most of your leveling journey safe and secure. It's damage rotation is very straightforward and easy to understand making it a great class for newer players looking for a stress-free journey.

That being said, priest is not without limitations. Its mobility is quite low so it is not well suited for open world farming and gathering in the same way that druid or hunter is. Those looking for a more high-octane and thoughtful rotation may be a bit let down by the simplicity of priest. The real depth of the class truly opens up healing in both raids and dungeons in the end game though. Priest has no shortage of powerful utility and ways to save their group in even dire situations.

Strengths And Weaknesses

  • Largest variety of healing builds
  • Straightforward and easy leveling
  • Consistent sustain for comfortable leveling
  • Limited mobility and mob clearing speed
  • Could be seen as too simple or boring
  • Limited Non-Healing Offspec Options

Leveling Strategy

Priest has a very unique talent tree in that many of the nodes along the way do not contribute to damage and kill speed because a majority of its damage comes from wanding. At level 40 however priests reach a significant power spike by unlocking Shadowform - suddenly making shadow abilities a powerful increase to our solo leveling speed. The recommended path in this guide is to grab efficient talents for our core abilities early on, spending most of our points in the Discipline tree. Discipline buffs abilities like Power Word: Shield as well as our mana regeneration - increasing sustain as a solo leveler as well as healing and mana efficiency in dungeons. Once you reach level 40 it is recommended to visit the priest trainer to re-spec talents so that you can fill out the completed Shadow tree. Levels after 40 then revisit important talents in the discipline tree.

At level 40 it is recommended to visit the priest trainer to respec in order to obtain Shadowform

Gameplay and Rotation

Keep Power Word: Fortitude active at all times in combat.

  1. Apply Power Word: Shield before combat
  2. Cast Smite
  3. Finish with melee swings if mob is low to regenerate mana

Focus on individual enemies, as pulling multiple mobs offers little benefit at these levels.

Level Walkthrough

Priest at early levels is quite cast-heavy and mana-hungry due to over reliance on Smite to kill mobs. This is not typical of most of the 1-60 leveling as priest, just the very beginning of your journey. Stock up on mana water from available vendors ASAP and drink immediately after pulls to regain mana.

Look to obtain a wand as soon as possible to speed up leveling. Lesser Magic Wand is craftable from low levels of Enchanting and also is purchasable on the auctionhouse. It is quite cheap to obtain so don't be concerned with enchanting if you would prefer to level with other professions. This wand is very powerful for level 5 and is useful all the way until the next enchanting wand.

Level 10 unlocks a class quest to earn your first priest specific racial. Visit your race-appropriate trainer for a short quest to unlock this ability. Resurrection is trainable at level 10 as well, so be sure to grab it before you start your first dungeon!

Playable Races

Priest is the only class that has class racial abilities on top of the normal racials so your decision on what race to play is slightly more impactful. All priest races are relatively are close in overall strength, with small advantages depending on your preferred role and the main activities you plan on partaking in once max level. These are simply my recommendations but you should be mainly choosing your characters race based off of personal preference.

Alliance

Gnome

Gnomes are a slight favorite for alliance priest in endgame with Expansive Mind and Eureka! improving mana efficiency. Contingency Plan is a solid all-around racial that doesn't have much downside other than its longer cooldown time.

Horde

Undead

Undead are preferred for horde as Dark Sacrifice allows conversion of health to mana. Additional sustain while leveling is provided by Touch of the Grave . Cannibalize can situationally boost mana regen in a pinch although it will likely not be usable in most raid fights.

Stat Priority

Your wand damage is the single biggest contributor to your damage and kill speed for nearly all of leveling. Aim to seek out wand upgrades whenever possible. Because wand damage doesn't really scale with any stats - we will instead look for items to improve our sustain so we can move from mob to mob quickly and efficiently. Once we convert to deep shadow at level 40 we begin stacking spellpower.

Priority:

  1. Wand Damage: As mentioned above wand damage is #1. The DPS stat is the only main consideration when looking at wands. We very slightly prefer faster wands but speed doesn't matter much.
  2. Spirit: Spirit increases mana regeneration while not casting as well as health regeneration outside of combat. Because of Spirit Tap and Meditation, every point in spirit benefits priest tremendously. Aim to acquire as much spirit as possible to minimize downtime and take advantage of these powerful talents.
  3. Spell Damage: Once we reach level 40 spell damage becomes another big contributor to our damage. This is the main stat we should be looking to stack alongside spirit. Before level 40 it is still a slight bonus to our damage but not nearly as important
  4. Stamina & Healing Power: Stamina increases our maximum health, and healing power boosts the healing of all abilities. Besides spirit, another way to preserve our mana is just have a large health pool with more mana efficient heals. These stats are nice to have when possible but don't sacrifice any of the above stats for them.
  5. Intellect: Intellect increases maximum mana and increases spell crit by a very small amount. It may seem counterintuitive but increasing maximum mana doesn't necessarily improve our leveling speed much. Intellect is better than nothing but not a big part of leveling.

Consumables

Consumables help reduce downtime, improve kill speed, and boost experience. There are many effective, low-priced consumables that you should be keeping on you while leveling.

  • Food: Most food increases experience gained by 5% - so always keep food buff active while leveling.
  • Mana Drinks: Carry plenty especially when healing dungeons
  • Health & Mana Potions: Often times higher level potions can be available for cheap on the auction house and alchemy supply vendors
  • Minor Wizard Oil: Cheap boost to spell power that can be used in more difficult areas or in dungeons

Professions

Since priest is not the most effective open-world class - many priest opt out of gathering professions in favor of ways to either make money in town or boost combat potential.

  1. Tailoring: Tailoring is great for priest leveling as you get all the required cloth for crafting while leveling naturally. Cloth can be converted to bolts to make armor that boosts our healing and damage output. The added emphasis on professions in WoW: Forever makes it likely that tailoring will have powerful end-game recipes for priest similar to Truefaith Vestments in vanilla wow.
  2. Enchanting: Enchanting allows for the disenchantment of magic quality or better items to create enchantments that buff gear. Since priest generally prefers to be in a group at max level - enchanting allows for extra income running dungeons as well as providing services in town. Notably enchanting also enables crafting of wands which are useful for priest leveling.
  3. Engineering: Useful for PvP, with gadgets that help control enemies and bombs that add burst damage. Turn stone into blasting powder while it still grants skill-ups, then use it to make bombs for leveling.
  4. Fishing: Fishing does not take up 1 of the 2 primary profession slots so it can be learned and trained at any time. Although it doesn't directly benefit our leveling speed - it can be an easy way to earn legacy points as priest, and the campfire buff from fishing is very useful.

Campfire Buffs

Campfires are new additions to WoW: Forever that provide hour-long combat buffs that can be refreshed by sitting at a campfire for one minute. The buffs are dependent on profession items used at the campsite - and the following are buffs that are relevant to you during your leveling journey.

  • Faction Banner: This is the Tailoring campfire buff, and provides spirit. This is useful until level 30 when you unlock Divine Spirit as the effects do not stack.
  • Enchanted Lute: A useful defensive buff from Enchanting that is nice to have while leveling but doesn't impact speed much
  • Fish Bowl : If you happen to level Fishing you can use this buff to boost all stats.
  • Camp Tent: Provides rested experience for 5% of a level. Although leatherworking is not recommended for priest, look to join in on campfire tents that you see in towns while leveling.

Tips & Tricks

  • Enable raid-style party frames and place them more central on your screen to allow for easier off healing and use of utility abilities.
  • Look to run every dungeon at level and pick up all available quests (link mobalytics dungeon guides page). Dungeon quest experience and item rewards are incredibly powerful in this version of the game
  • Create a system to regularly check Power Word: Fortitude, Inner Fire, Divine Spirit, and Shadowform in order to maintain near 100% uptime. Addons like EllesmereUI can help remind you when these things are not currently active
  • Levitate can be used to avoid fall damage from any height. Always carry Light Feather with you once this is learned and look to use it to your advantage traversing areas with large cliffs or dropoffs.
  • Mind Control can be used to break up tightly grouped mob camps by turning them against eachother before you engage.
  • Fill your first Waylaid Crate: Journeyman Textiles and turn-in for a large one-time reward that will allow you to purchase a powerful crafting recipe while leveling.
