Overview

Welcome to Vareion's WoW Forever Hunter Leveling Guide. In this guide I will show you my version of an optimal talent build, tips and tricks on how to make life a bit easier while leveling as well as how to effectively use the new abilities and changes made to hunter with Forever.

This guide will talk over all 3 specs Marksmanship, Beast Mastery & Survival, go over all the talent builds and I'll also show you a basic core rotation you'll be able to use in any scenario.

Level 1-10 will obviously be the hardest time on hunter as you won't have a pet yet.
Make sure to engage combat at max range and kite as much as you can before going into melee to finish the mobs off. This way you'll save yourself a lot of HP and speed up the 1-9 level bracket and get your power spike ASAP.
Once you get Tame Beast you will practically be unstoppable and with the pet changes made in WoW Forever you'll never have to stop to regenerate your health as your pet will tank everything without breaking a sweat. If you missed it: Pets now scale with YOUR stats, so the stronger you get, the stronger your pet gets. This also applies to Warlock. Every Pet family's abilities have been reworked, changed or got completely new abilities. Some are insane for PvP (Dismember), some will increase your damage output (Furious Howl) and some are good for keeping AoE threat (Swipe).

You will be flying through the levels and will be one of the fastest classes while leveling, along with warlocks and mages. You won't have any downtime since your pet will tank most of the damage and you have so much utility with your traps to adjust to any scenario.

Unfortunately, we currently only have 2 stable slots, however blizzard has already confirmed that they're going to give the stable system an overhaul in the near future so you'll be able to collect a bunch of pets and abilities without throwing out your pets.

Strengths And Weaknesses

  • One of the fastest leveling classes
  • Easy to play
  • High Burst Damage & Insane mobility
  • Pets have abilties for every situation (Dismember, Furious Howl, Dust Cloud)
  • You can play with or without a pet - Lone Wolf
  • High self reliance / sustain
  • strong open world PvP
  • Need to control a pet
  • Deadzone can get very annoying
  • Mana issues if you spam your buttons
  • Survival spec kinda meh for leveling
  • Ammo + Food dependent -> Reduced inventory space

Guide Variants

Beast Mastery is the best and easiest spec to level with as a hunter. You will power up your pet with talents like Unleashed Fury, Ferocity. Talents like Deadly Aspects will also strengthen you, making you and your pet an unstoppable force. At level 25 you'll unlock a new ability: Summon Hawk
This is going to be your most used spell from now on and you will need to keep up the dot that it applies to maximize your damage. Since Summon Hawk shares a cooldown with Arcane Shot you'll have to do a little bit of thinking in every fight you end up in. If it's going to be a longer fight and you can't burst him down, use Summon Hawk for the consistent damage over time, if you can blow a mob up and want to get rid of it as quickly as possible, prioritize Arcane Shot. This gives hunter a little bit more depth and makes this spec a bit more interesting to play in my opinion.

Gameplay & Rotation

Your primary abilities you will be using throughout your journey on Azeroth are Multi-Shot, Arcane Shot / Summon Hawk.
Taming a boar is your best choice, as it's Charge ability builds great initial aggro & boars deal good baseline damage and are insanely tanky as well. Additionally they eat pretty much everything you give them so finding food for your pet won't be any issue.Towards endgame, when enemies start to have a reasonable amount of armor, consider taming a Tallstrider and make use of their Dust Cloud ability.

In Forever you can now use traps during combat so weaving them into the fight can be a good idea but be careful not to pull too much threat with Explosive Trap or Immolation Trap. If your pet can't hold threat, consider not using too many damaging abilities.
All traps share a cooldown with each other so I'd recommend you to keep them for defensive situations.

Here's a basic rotation:

Always keep up your Trueshot Aura buff and make sure you're not in Aspect of the Cheetah when entering combat. Use Aspect of the Hawk in range and Aspect of the Beast in melee

1. Send in your pet and apply Hunter's Mark.

2. Arcane Shot / Summon Hawk (once you learn it). Keep in mind that you can always have 2 hawks up at the same time so make sure to prioritize the button. As of right now Summon Hawk deals more damage and scales better than Arcane Shot so you should always prioritize Summon Hawk.

3. Serpent Sting if single target, followed up by Multi-Shot

4. If you pull threat, try to keep the mobs away from you by using Feign Death or using Frost Trap / Wing Clip / Concussive Shot. At level 30 you'll unlock Intimidation, which will help you keep the threat on your pet.

Pets

Pets now scale with your player character:

  • 100% of your Crit strike
  • 10% of your highest Attack Power source
  • 30% of your Armor
  • 1 Hunter Stamina = 2 Pet Health
  • Avoidance now automatically built into their kit
  • Can no longer be buffed

Best Pets

Best DPS Pets: Wolf, Cat

Best Tank Pets: Bear

Best Balanced Pets: Boar, Tallstrider

Best PvP Pets: Crocolisk, Bird of Prey

Stat Priority

Agility = Intellect > Strength -- Once you have Careful Aim

Agility > Strength > Intellect -- Before Careful Aim

Agility increases your Attack Power & Crit Chance, while Intellect will increase your Attack Power once you have the Careful Aim talent and it will help you with your mana issues. Strength is another, worse, Attack Power boost.

Suggested Races

Alliance - Human, Night Elf, Dwarf, Skyborne

Horde - Orc, Tauren, Troll, Skyborne

Best Races for each Faction

S TIER - Night Elves provide Elune's Light which provide 10% increased Crit Chance for 15 seconds on a 3 min CD. They also have passive movement speed and dodge chance with Quickness which will make traversal a tiny bit faster. Wisp Spirit is also good to have just in case.

A TIER - Humans provide Will to Survive & Ruthless, which will be very strong towards the end game but early on you won't really notice the 2% crit chance. The Human Spirit is also pretty helpful if you suffer from mana issues. Human is the best choice for survival hunter.

S TIER - Trolls are easily the best choice for horde as Beast Slaying will get you a long way. Additionally, Berserking is one of the strongest buffs hunters can have as it gives you 10% attack speed for 10 seconds. In Forever this racial no longer requires you to be low HP to make use of the maximum % so you can use it whenever you need it, ideally combined with your other cooldowns like Rapid Fire.

A TIER - Tauren are the best choice if you want to zoom through the early levels and get to level 20 ASAP. Plainsrunning will NOT stack with Aspect of the Cheetah but Plainsrunning will still be coming in clutch if you need to kite.

Professions

PvP - Engineering + Mining

PvE - Leatherworking + Skinning

Tips & Tricks

Auto Shot Macro

This macro allows you to spam a button as you change targets to keep shooting with no interruption.

#showtooltip Auto Shot
/cleartarget [dead]
/targetenemy [noharm]
/cast !Auto Shot

Controlling your pet better.

I would always recommend you to put your pet attack command to shift + mousewheel up and pet follow to shift + mousewheel down. This way you have full control over your pet and will be able to control it to attack whatever target you want. To make sure your pet doesn't ignore those commands always make sure to put your pet on passive so only you will have a say on what it does.
