Overview

Hunter has always been one of the strongest leveling classes in Classic, and WoW Forever only makes that better. You still get the same very strong ranged damage, the best mobility in the game, as well as one of the best toolkits in the game for anybody running Solo. But now Hunter have a lot of quality of life changes and new tools that make the class feel much smoother to level.

The biggest power spike comes at Level 10 when you unlock Tame Beast and finally get your first pet. From that point on, your pet will be doing a huge amount of the work for you. Send it in with Growl on and it will tank anything for you while you sit back at range hitting the enemies with Serpent Sting, Arcane Shot, Aimed Shot and dropping Hawk pets on them with the new Summon Hawk, all without taking much damage yourself. This becomes even safer at Level 30 when you learn Feign Death, allowing you to drop all threat and making all enemies ignore you.

Beast Mastery is the recommended spec to level with. Both Marksmanship and Survival are viable as well, but Beast Mastery is untouchable due the new pet scaling and some insanely strong talents. Beast Mastery leans heavily into what already makes Hunter so good while leveling by making your pet significantly stronger and eventually giving you access to a new pet Summon Hawk at Level 25. Summon Hawk summons down a Hawk that attacks your target for 18 seconds, with a 6 second cooldown, but you can only have two active at once. This sadly shares a cooldown with Arcane Shot, so once you unlock it you will start choosing between using Arcane Shot for immediate damage or keeping your Hawks active for more damage over time (DoT).

Pets are also much more important in WoW Forever than they were in original Classic. Your pet now scales with your stats, and every pet family brings its own strengths and very unique abilities. Some are better for damage, others are better at tanking, and some bring very strong utility for PvP or group content. For leveling, we are going to focus mostly on Cats because they deal the most damage right now, attack ridiculously fast and you can get some of the best ones very early without wasting a ton of time camping rare spawns.

Hunter also has some really nice quality of life. Traps can now be used in combat, which means you won't have to blow your Feign Death just to get a Trap down. Your abilities no longer clip Auto Shot the way they did in Classic, and with the Beta cap being Level 30 you get powerful abilities like Aimed Shot, Rapid Fire, and Feign Death. As always, you'll still need to manage your positioning and stand still for a brief second when it is time for Auto Shot to fire, but you are no longer fighting against your own rotation every time you press an ability and losing out on all that damage.

The biggest strength of Hunter is how little downtime you have. Your pet tanks while you deal damage from range, you can start setting up the next pull while your pet finishes the current one, and you have enough crowd control and utility to recover from pulls that would kill a lot of other classes. Keep your pet happy, keep it upgraded with new abilities as you level, and get comfortable controlling it early. Once you do, Hunter becomes the fastest and safest class in the game.

  • Level 10-14 — Deadly Aspects
  • Level 15-16 — Focused Fire
  • Level 17-18 — Pathfinding
  • Level 19 — Improved Revive Pet
  • Level 20 — Bestial Swiftness
  • Level 21-24 — Unleashed Fury
  • Level 25 — Summon Hawk
  • Level 26 — Unleashed Fury
  • Level 27-29 — Ferocity
  • Level 30 — Intimidation

First five points go into Deadly Aspects since you’ll be sitting in Aspect of the Hawk for most of your leveling. This gives your Auto Shot has a 10% chance to increase your ranged attack speed by 30% for 12 seconds, which is like a mini Lust and you'll get a massive boost everytime it procs. Next max out Focused Fire for a slight 2% damage increase to both you and your pet.(note that you have to have your pet out for you to get that 2% buff.)

Put the next two points into Pathfinding to give you an extra 6% movement speed from Aspect of the Cheetah and Aspect of the Pack. We still dont' have a mount until Level 40, so any extra movement speed while running around questing is huge, plus if you're on the PvP server this talent makes you impossible to catch.

At Level 19 put one point into Improved Revive Pet. This cuts the cast time of Revive Pet by 3 seconds, reduces the Mana cost revive and brings your pet back with more Health. Hopefully your pet doesn't die very often, but things happen and when if it does, then Revive Pet makes getting it back significantly less annoying. At Level 20 grab Bestial Swiftness, increasing your pet’s movement speed by 30%. Yoiu want your pet moving as fast as possibl. The faster it gets to the next enemy, the more damage, which is threat, that it has before you start cranking it. Plus you need this to unlock Intimidation later.

From Levels 21 to 24 dump four points into Unleashed Fury. This buffs all of your pets, including the new Summon Hawk, by 12%. Then at Level 25 you finally pick up that new Summon Hawk. This summons a additonal pet Hawk to attack the target for 18 seconds, has a 6 second cooldown and you can have two Hawks active at once. Sadly, Summon Hawk shares a cooldown with Arcane Shot for some reason, so you’ll have to start choosing between immediate damage from your Arcane Shot or keeping your Hawks more like a damage over time ability. At Level 26 go back and put that 5th point in Unleashed Fury so you have the max 15% damage increase to the pets.

Finally, put your three points into Ferocity for 6% Crit chance on your pets and Summon Hawk and your last point is Intimidation which gives you an incredibly strong pet stun that lasts 3 seconds, generates a massive amount of threat and makes the attack used Crit. This is a really good talent for leveling because it gives you a little bit of CC and helps your pet get some more trheat, while also give some breathing room if they get in your deadzone.

Gameplay & Rotation

Hunter isn't really about standing still and repeating the exact same rotation every pull. Auto Shot, Serpent Sting, Arcane Shot, Aimed Shot, Multi-Shot, Summon Hawk and of course your pet, are all frequently used, so make sure they're on comfy keybinds. Most of your gameplay is about getting your pet onto the enemy first so it can start building some threat on it, then start sniping target. At this level my Cat still doesn't have any threat issues when solo'ing mobs.

  1. Start by putting up Hunter's Mark on your main target for the MASSIVE extra Ranged Attack Power, then send your pet. Give your pet a second to connect with the target before you unload everything into it. This becomes even easier once you get Bestial Swiftness at LV 20. There's also a pet Dash for some pet familys.
  2. Open with Serpent Sting only if the enemy will live long enough for that DoT to do some damage. On weaker enemies that are going to die in a couple seconds, you should skip this and just slam an Arcane Shot, or just save the Mana and let your pet finish the enemy off.
  3. Keep Auto Shot running throughout the entire fight. You still need to briefly stand still when your Auto Shot is about a half a second left on your shot timer. Get used to moving in between shots instead of just standing there. This is much easier and smoother since your other abilities won't clip your Auto Shot anymore.
  4. Once you unlock Summon Hawk at Level 25, treat this like a DoT, meaning make sure the enemy will be alive long enough to make the Hawk worth it, otherwise just hit it with an Arcane Shot. Summon Hawk lasts 18 seconds, has a 6 second cooldown, and you can have two Hawks active at once. For enemies that are going to live for a while, getting both Hawks out early gives them plenty of time to attack. As of right now, these Hawks equate for about 10% of my damage. 5% for the summon and 5% for the attack itself. These Hawks have very little Health and die in one shot to most things in the world and they pull extra mobs, so be careful and pay attention to where you're summoning them.
  5. Use Arcane Shot whenever you want immediate damage, but keep in mind that it shares a cooldown with Summon Hawk. Against enemies that will live long enough for your Hawks to attack for awhile then keeping both Hawks active is better than mindlessly pressing Arcane Shotevery time it lights up, while also saving you a chunk of Mana. If the enemy is almost dead, just use Arcane Shot or a few Auto Shots to finish it instead of summoning a Hawk that's barely going to get damage in.
  6. Use Aimed Shot whenever you have enough time(and patience) to stand still for 2 seconds. Aimed Shot shares a cooldown with Multi-Shot, so use Multi-Shot instead whenever you're fighting 2 or more enemies. And be careful, Multi-Shot will tag some random enemy from weird angles at time.
  7. Traps can be used in combat. At the current Level we can use Immolation Trap, Freezing Trap and Frost Trap. These are great ways to either deal some extra damage or get some room from the enemy.
  8. If you pull threat from your pet, use Concussive Shot to slow the enemy down and move away while still shooting Arcane Shot and stil stopping for the brief moment to Auto Shot. If it gets into melee range, you still have Raptor Strike to help finish it off, or Wing Clip to slow it down and allow you to get to a safe distance. Once you hit Level 30 you'll get Feign Death, which lets you completely drop your threat and make the enemy go back to your pet.
  9. You also get Intimidation at Level 30 that you can use it whenever you need your pet to immediately lock something down and get some threat. The 3 second stun gives you a TON of breathing room to use to your advantage.

Your basic leveling loop is pretty simple once you get used to it. Mark the target, send your pet in, apply Serpent Sting and Summon Hawk if the enemy will be up for a but, and try to keep shooting Auto Shots and weaving in Arcane Shots while your pet tanks everything for you. The better you get at moving between Auto Shots and sending your pet toward the next enemy early the smoother and faster Hunter starts to feel.

Recommended Pet

We highly recommend using a Cat for leveling. There are a MASSIVE amount of cats in the world, however there's a few options that stand out because they have significantly faster attack speed than every other tamable pet. For both Alliance and Horde the Starving Mountain Lion located all over Hillsbrad Foothills is the easiest to Tame. Cats are offensive pets, which means they have less Health and Armor than the other pet types, but do more damage. This fits Beast Mastery perfectly since your goal is to have your pet do as much damage as possible so it can hold threat.

The main reason we use the Starving Mountain Lion is due to it's extremely high attack speed. This Cat comes with Faster Attack VI, which sets it's attack speed to 1.2 seconds. This is extremely fast and is much higher damage than normal pets which default at 2 second attack speed.

Technically The Rake in Mulgore also has Faster Attack VI and you can tame it at Level 10. But this Cat is a Rare and is one of the most contested pets in the game, making it really hard to tame. It's got the same attack speed as the Starving Mountain Lions, but attack speed isn't all that matters. The other part that makes these pets so good is teaching them the highest rank available of Bite and Claw. With the Beta capped at Level 30, the highest rank of both is Rank 4, which can be found on certain pets at Level 24. Rank 5 for both isn't obtainable until Level 32.

We recommend taming an Level 25 Elder Ashenvale Bear from Ashenvale for Rank 4 Claw and then heading over the Hillsbrad Foothills and taming a Level 24 Giant Moss Creeper for Rank 4 Bite. Once you've learned both, you will be able to tame a Level 23 Starving Mountain Lion while you're out there in Hillsbrad Foothills. Teach it the Rank 4 Claw and Bite you just learned and have fun leveling.

If you're reading this and not leveled up enough to tame those, Alliance can tame a Moonstalker in Darkshore, and Horde can tame a Durotar Tiger in Durotar for Faster Attack V as early as Level 14. You can find Rank 3 Bite from Level 16 Deepmoss Creepers in Stonetalon Mountains and Rank 3 Claw can come from a variety of pets from as low as Level 13.

There are so many options for pets in WoW Forever and definitely other great ones that can fill any role you need and many choices for PvP as well. Here's a list of some of the more popular ones:

  • Carrion Birds have Demoralizing Screech
  • Boars have Charge and great survivability.
  • Crocolisks have Dismember
  • Bears have an AoE Swipe
  • Raptors have the bleed Savage Rend
  • Scorpids have Scorpid Poison
  • Spiders can CC with Web
  • Wolves have Furious Howl
  • Hyenas have Tendon Rip
  • Tallstriders have Dust Cloud

Stat Priority

Gear has changed a lot in WoW Forever and we’re only at the Level 30 Beta cap, so this priority is subject to change once the game launches and we can level to 60. For now, your biggest goal is pretty simple: keep your Bow or Gun upgraded and stack as much Agility as possible. Pets now scale with your stats, which makes gear significantly more important than it was in Classic.

  1. Weapon Damage: Your ranged weapon is by far the most important piece of gear you have. Auto Shot, Aimed Shot and several of your attacks care only about your weapon damage. So always keep an eye out for upgrades. Check the auction hour every couple levels and slam dungeons if you see that it has a powerful Bow or Gun option. If given the option, slower ranged weapons are very strong since they have higher damage per shot, which makes Aimed Shot do more damage.
  2. Hit Chance: Missing feels AWFUL, especially when it’s an Aimed Shot or Concussive Shot. Hit Chance reduces your chance to miss your shot. There isn’t a ton of Hit available at this low level right now, so don’t go crazy hunting for it, but it’s extremely good if you can get some.
  3. Agility: This is your main stat and you should have it on every piece of gear. This increases your Attack Power, Ranged Attack Power and Crit Chance. Your pet also inherits part of your Attack Power, so Agility is helping both of you at the same time.
  4. Critical Strike Chance: Crit is REALLY good for Beast Mastery because your pet gets 100% of your Crit Chance. You'll eventually get talents like Ferocity and Frenzy which will also make pet Crits even more important, so this stat scales both sides of your damage instead of only buffing your own shots.
  5. Intellect: Gives you a larger Mana pool, letting you use more Arcane Shot, Serpent Sting, Multi-Shot and Summon Hawk without having to stop and drink. We aren’t taking Careful Aim with this leveling build, mainly because we don't have much Intellect this early in the game, so it wouldn't give us much Attack Power.
  6. Spirit: Spirit increases your Mana regeneration and is actually pretty nice while leveling since less time drinking means more time killing things. However we still wouldn’t ever choose it over the actual damage stats.
  7. Stamina: Gives you more Health and also gives your pet 2 Health for every 1 Stamina you have. This is found naturally on most your gear, so you won’t have to chase Stamina, but extra survivability never hurts.
  8. Strength: Strength only increases your melee Attack Power, so it's pointless as Beast Mastery. Raptor Strike scales off Strength, and we occasionally use it when the enemy reaches you, but I prefer to Wing Clip and move away.
  9. Haste: Haste isn’t in the game right now. Once the game launches and we get hgher leveled gear this change, especially since attack speed is already very strong for Hunter.

Suggested Races

Alliance: Night Elf

Horde: Orc

Hunter has seven playable races in WoW Forever. Dwarf, Human, Night Elf & Skyborne for Alliance. While Orc, Tauren, Troll & Skyborne are the Horde options. Every race also received major racial changes, including several new active abilities that can directly affect Hunter gameplay. The racial decision is much closer than it's ever been in Classic and ultimately you can choose your favorite race and you won't be able to tell the difference in terms of damage in PvE.

As of right now Night Elf is the best option for Alliance. Elune's Light gives you 10% Crit Chance for 15 seconds on a 3 minute cooldown, and since your pet now inherits 100% of your Crit Chance that is MASSIVE for both you and your pet. You also get 2% passive movement speed from Quickness which doesn't sound like much but adds up FAST when you're running around questing for hours. Shadowmeld can also be used in combat now, giving you another really good button for getting out of trouble. Shadowmeld and Feign Death are both like get out of jail free cards.

For Horde, Orc is insanely strong. Blood Fury gives you 10% Attack Power for 15 seconds on only a 2 minute cooldown, and because your pet inherits part of your Attack Power it gets a boost from this as well. Hardiness reduces the duration of Stuns by 20%, while Shatter Curse gives you some really strong protection against Curse and Magic damage. Troll is not a horrible choice due to Berserking, but it loses out to Orc.

Professions

Leatherworking and Skinning are a popular starting pair for Hunter. Skinning gives you a use for all the leather you'll find while leveling, including crafting extremely useful and armor. Half of the Best in Slot for Hunters right now comes from Leatherworking, making it highly suggested.

First Aid is another popular option for professions because this is a secondary profession, meaning you can train First Aid and still have your two primary professions. First Aid lets you to make very helpful bandages out of cloth to quickly heal up. In WoW Forever, it also means you can make health potions, making First Aid even more valuable. The main bandages you should be using are:

  • Heavy Silk Bandage
  • Mageweave Bandage
  • Heavy Mageweave Bandage

Consumables

WoW Forever's profession revamp allows Alchemy to make new extremely powerful potions and elixirs that will significantly boost you and your pets Attack Power, Agility, Defenses, Stats and much more. None of them require you to be an Alchemist, so you can buy all these and more from the Auction House:

  • Elixirs and Potions:
    • Elixir of Agility: Increases Agility by 15 for an hour. Does not stack with Elixir of Lesser Agility but can be used at Level 25
    • Elixir of Lesser Agility: Increases Agility by 8 for an hour. Does not stack with Elixir of Agility but can be used at Level 18
    • Troll's Blood Elixir: This makes you regenerate 12 Health every 5 seconds for one Hour.
    • Lesser Mageblood Elixir: Regenerate 6 Mana every 5 Seconds for 30 minutes.
    • Elixir of Lesser Intellect: Increases your Intellect by 6 for an hour.
    • Frenzy Potion: Increases your Attack Power by 28 for 20 seconds.
    • Greater Healing Potion: Restores Health. Keep a stack of them on you for emergencies.
    • Mana Potion: Restores Mana.
    • Swiftness Potion: Increases run speed by 50% for 15 seconds.
    • Draught of Water Walking: Lets you walk on water for 30 minutes.
    • Draught of Water Breathing: Lets you breathe underwater for 30 minutes.
  • Scrolls
    • Scroll of Agility II: Increases Agility by 9 for 30 minutes.
    • Scroll of Protection III: Increases Armor by 180 for 30 minutes.
  • Food buffs
    • Hot Wolf Ribs — Grants 10 Agility and 5% more experience from kills for 15 minutes.
    • Mithril Headed Trout — Grants 20 Attack Power and 5% more experience from kills for 15 minutes.

Campfire Buffs

A basic campfire is made with from Cooking and at the early stage has room for three profession features, with each player contributing one. You need spend at least 60 seconds sitting or crafting nearby to pick up the benefits. Equivalent camp and class buffs do not stack, so check what you already have before looking for another camp.

  • Camp Tent comes from Leatherworking and brings your rested experience up to 5% of a level. It has no effect if you already have more than that amount stored.
  • Camp Chair comes from Skinningand gives 2%. Critical Strikes for spells and attacks. Since our DoTs can critically strike, this is useful for Warlock. It is exclusive with Moonkin Form
  • Enchanted Lute comes from Enchanting and gives 285 ARMOR, 12 to allAttributes and 20 to all Resistances. It is exclusive with Mark of the Wild.
  • Incense Candle comes from Herbalism and increases Intellect, giving you a larger Mana pool. It is exclusive with Arcane Intellect.
  • Mana Well comes from Alchemy and restores Mana every 5 seconds. It gives you another way to recover Mana along side your drains and Life Tap. It is exclusive with Blessing of Wisdom.
  • Fish Bowl comes from Fishing and increases all of your stats by 8%. This is extremely useful while leveling. It is exclusive with Blessing of Kings.
  • Faction Banner comes from Tailoring and increases Spirit, buffing your Life Tap. It is exclusive with Divine Spirit.
  • First Aid Kit comes from First Aid and gives your 54 Stamina. It is exclusive with Power Word: Fortitude.

Leveling Tips

Keep your abilities trained! Rank upgrades matter a ton, so visit your Hunter trainer regularly every two levels. (2, 4, 6, 8, etc.) Check your spellbook and action bars after you train to make sure you are using the newest rank of the Skill. Alternatively you can make a /cast macro to all your abilities, then you'll never need to worry about accidentally forgetting.

Keep your Bow or Gun upgraded. Your ranged weapon is the most important piece of gear you have. A better Bow or Gun makes your Auto Shot and other weapon based abilities hit significantly harder. Make sure to check the Auction House every couple levels and keep an eye on Dungeon loot for upgrades. A good weapon can make a bigger difference than replacing several armor pieces at once.

Turn on and use your Shot Timer. You can turn on a Shot / Swing timer on from the game settings and it will put a bar on your screen. It's highly recommended to use that to time your shots. Mainly so you can run around and know when you're about to shoot. If you stop running and hold still with about 0.3-0.5 left on the timer you will shoot and then can immediately start running again.

Always keep extra Ammo on you. Running out of arrows or bullets means you basically stop being a Hunter. Ammo goes by faster than you think it would and there's nothing worse than being out in the world questing and then your arrows or bullets run out. Keep a large stack in your Ammo Pouch or Quiver before leaving town. A Quiver or Ammo Pouch also gives you extra ranged attack speed, so make sure you're actually using one and you can put it in the reagent bag slot so it's not taking up your inventory space.

Keep your pet Happy at all times. Pet Happiness directly affects its damage. A Happy pet deals 125% of its normal damage, while an Unhappy pet deals significantly less and will even start losing Loyalty. Carry food your pet can eat and toss it some whenever its Happiness starts dropping. Your pet is a MASSIVE part of your damage, even more so as Beast Mastery, so don't ignore this. Also certain pets eat certain foods, so check what your pet can eat before stocking up on melons and then realizing your Cat won't eat it.

Keep your pet abilities upgraded. Abilities like Bite and Claw don't automatically rank up as you Level. You'll need to tame certain pets, fight with them until you learn their ability, then teach that new rank to your main pet through Beast Training. This sounds annoying at first, but once you've learned an ability it stays available for future pets that can use that ability.

Leave Growl on while Solo and TURN IT OFF in Dungeons. While leveling alone you want your pet generating as much threat as possible so enemies stay off you. In a Dungeon, Growl can constantly fight the Tank for threat and make everybody hate you. Right click the ability on your pet bar to disable its automatic use before you start pulling. It's smart to also keep it on a comfortable keybind that you can remember so you can taunt whenever you want. This can come in handy to save a group from wiping.

Get comfortable controlling your pet early. Sending your pet toward the next enemy before you start blasting gives it time to connect and start building threat. Once you unlock Bestial Swiftness and eventually Dash, your pet gets much better at getting onto enemies quickly. Hunter feels MUCH smoother once pet control becomes second nature instead of something you only think about after you've already pulled threat. The more you can stand and pump, the faster leveling as Beast Mastery will become.

Don't waste Mana on enemies that are already dead. If something is almost dead, you don't need another Serpent Sting or Aimed Shot. Let your pet and Auto Shot finish it and save your Mana for the next pull. Saving Mana on every pull adds up FAST and means less time sitting around drinking.

Use your Traps aggressively. Traps can be used in combat now, which is a massive quality of life change from Classic. Freezing Trap can completely remove an enemy from a bad pull, while Frost Trap gives you a huge area to kite around. Immolation Trap is great for some extra free damage.

Be careful with Aspect of the Cheetah. The movement speed is amazing while traveling, especially since you won't have a Mount until Level 40, but getting hit while it's active Dazes you. Swap out of it before getting hit, otherwise you'll be stuck walking slow.

Do your Level 10 Hunter quest immediately. At Level 10 you can begin the short quest that teaches you how to tame pets with Tame Beast. Once completed you'll be able to go round taming whatever pet you want. Your pet tanks, deals a huge amount of damage and eventually gains access to some insanely strong family abilities depending on which type of pet you tamed.

Dismiss your pet before doing any Dungeon skips or jumps. Hunter pets have a long history of deciding that the fastest way back to you is through every enemy in the Dungeon. If your group is jumping down a ledge, skipping mobs or taking some weird shortcut, dismiss your pet first and resummon it afterward. This will save you from at least one embarrassing wipe.

At Level 30, abuse Feign Death. This is one of the best Hunter abilities in the game. If you rip threat off your pet, pull too many enemies or something just goes wrong, Feign Death can completely drop your threat and send enemies back to your pet if you have one out. If you don't have a pet out, then the enemies go back to wherever they were and you're good to get back up and continue doing whatever you were doing. Between your pet, Traps and Feign Death, it's REALLY hard to die on Hunter after Level 10 unless you've pulled something you had absolutely no business fighting. If you are a Night Elf, you can do this with Shadowmeld as well.

Macros

Auto Shot Macro

This macro allows you to spam a button as you change targets to keep shooting with no interruption. This macro also will have your pet use it's Bite ability. Change the Rank to whatever rank you currently have.

  • #showtooltip Auto Shot
  • /targetenemy [noexists][dead][help]
  • /cast !Auto Shot
  • /cast Bite(Rank 3)

Hunter's Mark Macro

This will send your pet to attack whoever your put your Hunter's Mark on.

  • #showtooltip Hunter's Mark
  • /petattack
  • /cast Hunter's Mark

Melee Macro

This one button macro will cycle through your melee abilities to do maximum damage when being attacked. Mongoose Bite is only usable after you dodge. When proc'd this macro will use that instead of Raptor Strike. This macro also tells your character to continue auto attacking as well.

  • #showtooltip
  • /startattack
  • /cast Raptor Strike
  • /cast Mongoose Bite

Pet Attack

I love putting this on mouse wheel up to send in my pet. You can also macro this into your auto shot macro, but I prefer to have more control of my pet at all times.

  • #showtooltip
  • /petattack
  • /cast Charge
  • /cast Dash

Pet Passive/Follow

Great for mousewheel down. This will make your pet passive and come to you to get out of danger.

  • #showtooltip
