Overview

Among the many new items added to the game in Season 2, Tortuga has really made a splash. It's a powerful build-around that enables some wild combos, all centered around using Friends.

There's a ton of variety. Perhaps you focus on non-Weapon Friends to take advantage of Silencer. Or you could use an unconventional Piano setup. Who says Dive Weights can't be a Friend?

We're only just scratching the surface, because sky's the limit when it comes to Tortuga. It's a super fun archetype that rewards exploration, so dive in and see what you can find!

Okay I promise that was that last one... :)

Core Combos and Synergies

Tortuga

Tortuga is a powerful threat thanks to its combination of huge base Damage, Haste support, and Charging capabilities. As the primary source of offense, being able to Haste the rest of the board is a valuable asset. It's pretty much everything you could ever want in an item.

Any item that Charges upon other item-use always has potential, and with Tortuga that requirement is extremely easy to fulfill. Friends are very common within The Bazaar, meaning it's less about finding the right support, and more about optimizing as better options are found. It doesn't take much to get it off the ground.

While Tortuga is a bit slower at its base Silver tier (with a longer Cooldown), its base Damage more than makes up for it. However, one way you can set yourself up for success is to look for Insect Wings to reduce its Cooldown.

Kripp had a Restorative enchant on his Tortuga which gave the build some much needed sustain. Given his particular setup with Orange Julian, having a strong line of defense is a big benefit (Shielded would also work well).

Figurehead

Figurehead is an incredible enabler for Tortuga builds since the majority of Vanessa's Friends are also Aquatic items. Reducing the Cooldowns across the board makes the Charge loop so much faster, which in turn makes the Haste uptime more reliable.

It's a great way to accelerate the board without needing too many specific items, but do keep in mind it will need upgrades in order to remain effective. Tortuga definitely has priority, so you'll likely need to scour several vendors to upgrade it organically.

Orange Julian

Orange Julian isn't super common among Tortuga setups, but if acquired early enough it offers fantastic Damage scaling. By establishing a good Economy it'll greatly bolster your potential output. Ambergris works great here since Aquatic items are already a common pickup.

One small flaw with this approach is that it's yet another item which requires upgrades to stay effective. While you could keep it at lower tier, its long Cooldown could certainly come back to bite you later on. However, you could utilize your "cheat-death" to select the "upgrade all items to Gold-tier" option if you have multiple lower tier items.

IllusoRay

IllusoRay is really strong with Tortuga since it Charges it three times every time it activates. While IllusoRay can often be too slow in a lot of builds, the consistent Haste from Tortuga keeps it moving quickly. In combination with its Multicast Slows, it's very effective at maintaining speed control over the enemy. This is a ton of value for a single Small slot and is super easy to enable, making it a popular inclusion.

Supportive Items and Skills

Fast Friends

Zoarcid is a pretty common early inclusion for its reliable targetable Haste, even without a ton of Burn support to Charge it. It certainly does the job when you're still piecing things together, while still having the ability to spike in power later on.

Simply getting one spammy Burn trigger will more than justify its position, which isn't too hard considering the many item/skill/enchant combos. In Kripp's case, he actually got a RED-F1R3FLY off of Shovel. When placed between Zoarcid and Tortuga it's insane.

As mentioned above, you can really make use of a wide variety of setups. Pufferfish + Jellyfish is a tried and true combo, while Piano can open the door to many crazy contraptions. In general, focus on finding synergies that spam as many Charge triggers as possible.

Inexorable

Inexorable is an excellent source of Crit Chance for any build that gets it online early enough. It's a premium choice when available since it eventually grows into a huge flat bonus, without needing time to scale during combat. No worries if you don't find it, there's plenty of alternative options.

Captain's Charge

Captain's Charge may seem redundant since Tortuga already provides Haste to the board, but given that it's only a one second effect, it helps to have a little more to help kickstart the Charge loop. Applying extra Haste on the first cast makes it easier to stack Haste with subsequent casts.

Stop That!

Stop That! is a good insurance policy that can help disrupt the enemy when it matters most. Slowing multiple items can often buy you enough time to get back into the game, especially when you have Heal/Shield/Lifesteal on the Tortuga. Additionally, the Slow stacks alongside IllusoRay to keep the enemy hindered.

Electric Eels Variant

Electric Eels

Electric Eels actually works surprisingly well with Tortuga thanks to its spam Charging nature. It's a pretty good way to fill the board without needing specific combos, as it's pretty self-sufficient.

Its effectiveness can vary depending on the matchups you encounter, so if the meta shifts away from the more spammy setups, it won't be the ideal inclusion. Regardless, having more viable options is always nice.

Sharkray + Old Saltclaw

Sharkray can become a real menace with enough upgrades and a fast enough Tortuga. It's a nice option if your build lacks scaling, especially since skills and enchantments aren't required. Old Saltclaw is a solid Small slot-in for the same reason, and alongside Electric Eels it fits even better,

Note that Kripp luckily stumbled upon a Shiny Sharkray making it far better than normal, but even without, Sharkray can still find a home with Tortuga.

Artillery Spotter

Artillery Spotter is a very efficient source of Crit Chance in these more Large/Medium focused setups. As long as you can stay within the five item threshold it's well worth the pickup, even if you don't have additional ways to take advantage of the Crit.
