The Bazaar Mak: Quest Builds

Mak

Overview

Quest builds offer some of the highest scaling potential in all of The Bazaar. These powerful Relics can reach absurdly high numbers, making them game winning threats, IF you can fulfill their conditions.

In this guide, we'll showcase a few different end game builds, and explain some of the opening lines to help you approach the early to mid game.

While every build is viable under the right conditions, please note that a build's average strength can greatly vary with each patch. If you want a clear look at what's working, check out our Meta Builds.

Bronze Items & Opening Lines

Here are some example items and openers to look for during the first few days, based on the Bronze item pool.

Quest boards have a wide range of opening lines depending on the Relic you are hoping to play. At the start, they usually lean into another item as their carry, at least until the point where the first Quest has been fulfilled. Common openers include Candles, Nightshade / Dragon's Breath, Refractor, and Aludel.

  • Candles — A great Burn opener to lead into Eternal Torch. Prioritize the fastest Small non-Ammo items to maximize its Charge capabilities.
  • Nightshade / Dragon's Breath — Can play into Idol of Decay or Life Conduit. It's good enough with just 2-3 Regen items, and has highroll potential.
  • Refractor — This scales very well alongside Sands of Time + Smelling Salts. Lifesteal is highly recommended, so look for Mortar & Pestle early on.
  • Aludel — Not ideal, but a passable flex opener. With a bit of Poison scaling (ex. Emerald, Fungal Spores) it can get the job done in the first few days.

While it's possible to purchase more than one primary Quest Relic at a time, in order to maintain a stable economy, we recommend choosing only one to commit to.

Catalyst Spawners

  • Aludel — A zero commitment starting point, since it can double as both a Catalyst spawner and playable threat.
  • Mortar & Pestle — The obvious choice if you're playing a Refractor line. This generally preserves Stash space the longest.
  • Cellar / Potion Potion — Will rarely have additional benefits, but they're spawners if you need them.

It's always helpful to have at least one of these early on, as a lucky Transform can provide a major power spike. Mak greatly benefits from playing opportunistically.

Additional Notes

  • Blank Slate — Playable alongside any of the primary Quest Relics. During PvE fights, consider (safely) weakening your board to allow time for more casts.

Silver Items

Here are the signpost items that enable the build, along with some mid game inclusions that help bridge the gap to the final board.

Core Items

  • Excavation Tools — Always welcome on any Quest board, as it improves the overall speed and startup time. Solid at Silver, but even better once upgraded.
  • Flying Potion — Provides board-wide Haste support if you can scale or solve its Ammo. It's a very flexible addition to just about any Mak build.
  • Runic Potion — The premium Lifesteal enabler for Sands of Time builds. It ensures reliable sustain for Refractor, then Magnus' Femur later on.
  • Soulstone — This offers a lot of utility for its size, but can be challenging to complete depending on when you find it. It's also very reliant on upgrades.

Mid Game Items

  • Tomb of the Ancients — A respectable carry in the mid game, with the potential to build towards full Freeze later. Blank Slate easily solves its Quests.
  • Sunlight Spear / Spiked Censer — These compliment Life Conduit by allowing the build to weaponize its Regen scaling.
  • Wild Quillback — A fast source of both Regen and Poison triggers, great for scaling Life Conduit and Idol of Decay.
  • Rapid Injection System + Adrenal Converter — This duo is an excellent core for Idol of Decay, but prioritize Regen skills to offset your own Poison.
  • Gravstone — With a few Relics, this quickly turns into another fast source of Regen triggers for Life Conduit. Potion/Flying support isn't required.
  • Spider Mace — Pairs perfectly with Rapid Injection System and/or Wild Quillback to spam Poison triggers.
  • Ouroboros Statue — Satisfactory Regen support for Poison/Self-Poison builds. Often used while searching for the more popular core items.
  • Oil Lantern — A solid Candles-like threat for fast Regen spamming boards. If you're ahead on tempo, it can occasionally snowball an early 10 wins.
  • Frozen Flame — An optional Burn carry alongside Tomb of the Ancients, Blank Slate, and/or Frost Totem.
  • Frost Totem — Freeze builds have an incredibly high ceiling, but an equally low floor. Upgrades are mandatory, so consider your position before committing.

Economy Items

  • Peacewrought — Mak's staple source of income. Keep a consistent flow of fodder items to maximize your gains (ex. buying/hoarding cheap Small items).
  • Sifting Pan — The ideal Catalyst spawner in terms of value. However, don't worry about replacing your current one if funds are tight.
  • Apothecary — Generates decent income since it can spawn Reagents of any size. At Gold/Diamond tier, be sure to keep at least three Stash slots available.
  • The Tome of Yyahan — One of the few ways to permanently stack Regen out of combat. At worst, the Small Reagents still provide some funds.
  • Book of Secrets — While this doesn't generate gold, obtaining free skills is amazing value. However, your results will definitely vary!

Eternal Torch Build

Mak builds are often defined by their enchantments due to the abundance of Transform effects. This adds a lot of variance to the final board, so be sure to adapt to your own creations.

Essential Items

  • Eternal Torch — One of the fastest scaling Burn items in the game. If you're snowballing you can optimize for speed, but otherwise sustain is very important.

Upgrade Priority: Eternal Torch > Library > Scales

Recommended Items

  • Library — Significantly improves the startup time and efficiency of the build. The passive CDR helps Mak keep up with some of the faster heroes.
  • Scales — Provides incredibly board-wide Charge support if you can get around its positioning requirement.
  • Pendulum — A staple inclusion for any build that wants to create a fast Charge loop between two items.
  • Thurible — Flexible, but notable. It's a Small fast Burn item that helps scale Eternal Torch faster, and the Relic tag also procs Ancient Flamekeeper.

Alternative Items

  • Excavation Tools — Helps target Charge Eternal Torch while occupying minimal board space.
  • Smelling Salts + Soulstone — A two item duo that can effectively create permanent Haste uptime. Completing the Slow Quest is required.
  • Atmospheric Sampler — If you can solve enchantments (or Flying) across the board, it's an incredibly effective Charge item.
  • Flying Potion — Solve its Ammo and it'll Haste your board at efficient speeds. It can also help enable Atmospheric Sampler.
  • Palanquin — This has the power to reduce Eternal Torch down to a one second Cooldown, IF you can reliably Crit. Diamond-tier is highly recommended.
  • Laboratory — Offers reliable Charge support but at Large size. Can be useful if you benefit from the enchant effect, or lack more efficient options.
  • Sunlight Vault — A powerful scaling option that can send Eternal Torch to the moon.
  • Blank Slate — Can be a perfectly reasonable inclusion to keep around if you've got extra space on board.
  • Secret Formula — Specifically useful alongside a Mossy Eternal Torch.

Recommended Skills

  • Ammo — Gunner, Stocked
  • Burn Scaling — Conflagration, Improvised Burn
  • Burn Triggers — Ancient Flamekeeper, Heated Shells (Flying Potion), Hot Spot
  • Charge — Flashpoint Ignition (Flying Potion)
  • Cooldown Reduction — Archeologist, Long Strides, Pacifist
  • Crit Chance — Building Crescendo, Honed Strike, Tracer Fire
  • Disruption — Frostfire, Debilitating Secrets
  • Haste — Quick Ignition, Quick Study
  • Max Health — Backroom Dealings, Large Appetites

Problem Solving Priority: Sustain (Defensive Enchant) > Startup Time > Crit Chance

Life Conduit Build

Mak builds are often defined by their enchantments due to the abundance of Transform effects. This adds a lot of variance to the final board, so be sure to adapt to your own creations.

Essential Items

  • Life Conduit — Speed is vital for ensuring you survive long enough to scale. If that's solved, prioritize an offensive enchant to drastically ramp up your output.

Upgrade Priority: Life Conduit > Library > Quill and Ink > Excavation Tools

Recommended Items

  • Library — The ideal source of CDR whenever no Weapons are involved. It's a key component for evening the playing field against otherwise faster builds.
  • Excavation Tools — Helps kickstart Life Conduit to get the Regen scaling started ASAP.
  • Atmospheric Sampler — Excellent Charge support with a fully enchanted board (or Flying Potion support).
  • Quill and Ink — When upgraded and combined with Library, this becomes a very efficient source of Multicast Regen triggers.
  • Soul Ring — If an offensive enchant isn't available, this gives the build a proactive win condition.

Alternative Items

  • Pendulum — A great choice for setting up a fast Charge loop. Pairs well with a Diamond-tier Quill and Ink.
  • Flying Potion — Enables Atmospheric Sampler if needed and provides great Haste support. Some additional Ammo is required.
  • Scales — Assuming you can line it up accordingly, it's a powerful Charge item. Diamond-tier is definitely recommended.
  • Palanquin — If you can solve Crit, this can reduce Life Conduit down to the minimum one second Cooldown.
  • Laboratory — Reliable Charge support for Relic-based boards. Less optimal than the Medium items, but a fine replacement.
  • Sunlight Vault — Grants Multicast to Life Conduit after scaling its Regen. It gets even better with a Fiery enchant (which is commonly picked).
  • Sunlight Spear — Faster than Soul Ring, but double the size. Another solid win condition if needed.
  • Secret Formula — Can turn Quill and Ink into the carry, or further scale a Fiery/Toxic Life Conduit.
  • Spiked Censer — Not ideal with Library, but it's another way to turn Regen into offense.

Recommended Skills

  • Ammo — Gunner, Stocked
  • Cooldown Reduction — Rapid Relief, Archeologist
  • Crit Chance — Building Crescendo, Honed Strike, Medic's Precision, Pacifist
  • Disruption — Debilitating Secrets
  • Haste — Quick Study
  • Max Health — Backroom Dealings
  • Regen Gain — Emergency Draught
  • Regen Scaling — Vital Renewal
  • Regen Triggers — Secrets of Life, Thirsty (Flying Potion)

Problem Solving Priority: Startup Time > Offensive Enchant > Crit Chance
