Overview

Potion builds thrive off the back of their brewed enchantments. While there's a lot of variance at play, their unique strength allows many different setups to come together. Embrace the RNG!

In this guide, we'll showcase a few different end game builds, and explain some of the opening lines to help you approach the early to mid game.

While every build is viable under the right conditions, please note that a build's average strength can greatly vary with each patch. If you want a clear look at what's working, check out our Meta Builds.

Bronze Items & Opening Lines

Here are some example items and openers to look for during the first few days, based on the Bronze item pool.

Potion openers are most commonly built around Show Globe + Cellar. Both of these can also work independently at the start, but together they provide a lot more consistency. If neither are available, you can sometimes get away with a simple Aludel or Crocodile Tears line.

  • Show Globe + Cellar — Prioritize faster Potions to maximize Show Globe scaling. Cellar helps solve Ammo during the early game.
  • Crocodile Tears — Can deal a respectable amount of burst alongside fast Burn/Poison items. If you're lucky, it combos incredibly well with Lash Out.
  • Aludel — A passable Multicast Poison threat if there's nothing better. It helps to have some form of Poison scaling, but it isn't required.

Catalyst Spawners

  • Cellar — A staple build enabler during the early to mid game. The obvious choice among Catalyst spawners for Potion builds.
  • Potion Potion — Can be solid enough on board initially, which helps save on Stash space.
  • Aludel — Less ideal than the previous two, but reasonable if you're in need of something playable.
  • Mortar & Pestle — The Lifesteal is rarely relevant, but it's still a Catalyst spawner if you need one.

It's always helpful to have at least one of these early on, as a lucky Transform can provide a major power spike. Mak greatly benefits from playing opportunistically.

Additional Notes

  • Philosopher's Stone — This can become a solid early defensive item once you start Transforming more frequently. A great flex inclusion.

Silver Items

Here are the signpost items that enable the build, along with some mid game inclusions that help bridge the gap to the final board.

Core Items

  • Potion Distillery — The quintessential enabler of the Potion archetype. It allows you to continuously reroll enchanted Potions until you get the right one.
  • Flying Potion — A staple for board-wide Haste support, but requires additional Ammo to fully take advantage of it.
  • Strength Potion — An incredible Potion that singlehandedly solves Crit (doubling your output). However, you do need to line up its timing carefully.
  • Athanor — If you can increase its base Burn, it'll weaponize every Potion into powerful damage over time.
  • Recycling Bin — Provides valuable board-wide Cooldown Reduction in exchange for some RNG. The key enabler for Vial Launcher.
  • Runic Potion — Offers reliable sustain for Vial Launcher and Bottled Explosion builds.
  • Alembic — Can somewhat fill the role of Potion Distillery, and is also a solid Catalyst spawner.
  • Satchel — Has the potential to scale into a powerful Regen item if found early. It's best used with Infinite Potion and Broken Bottle.

Mid Game Items

  • Energy Potion — Slower than Flying Potion, but less conditional. Gold/Diamond (or Turbo) is recommended.
  • Frost Potion — Weak at Silver, decent at Gold, and strong at Diamond. When found in multiples, it can potentially unlock a full Freeze setup.
  • Cauldron — Pairs alongside Vat of Acid to create an additional Burn/Poison threat.
  • Excavation Tools — Specifically useful for Charging Vat of Acid once the Relic tag has been acquired.
  • Spiked Censer — Can be a strong carry item for dedicated Satchel boards.

Economy Items

  • Peacewrought — Mak's staple source of income. Keep a consistent flow of fodder items to maximize your gains (ex. buying/hoarding cheap Small items).
  • The Tome of Yyahan — Small Reagents are ideal for Potions, making this a more consistent choice than Apothecary (unless controlling Stash space).
  • Apothecary — If you need funds, keep up to three slots available for the chance at Skyspirit Ashes. Otherwise, limit space to guarantee a Small one.
  • Sifting Pan — The ideal Catalyst spawner in terms of value. However, don't worry about replacing your current one if funds are tight.
  • Book of Secrets — While this doesn't generate gold, obtaining free skills is amazing value. However, your results will definitely vary!

Vitality Potion Build

Mak builds are often defined by their enchantments due to the abundance of Transform effects. This adds a lot of variance to the final board, so be sure to adapt to your own creations.

Essential Items

  • Vitality Potion — A Fiery/Toxic/Obsidian enchant is required to enable Vitality Potion as a solo carry. Rerolling with Potion Distillery is your best bet.
  • Boiling Flask — Grants Multicast to Vitality Potion and Flying Potion, enabling the one round combo.

Upgrade Priority: Vitality Potion > Library > Scales > Strength Potion

Recommended Items

  • Library — Offers board-wide Cooldown Reduction to create a faster startup time. Not ideal if using an Obsidian Vitality Potion.
  • Flying Potion — Mak's fastest Haste option, especially when it can Multicast for immediate effect.
  • Strength Potion — Doubles the output of Vitality Potion as long as you can navigate its activation time.
  • Scales — An excellent source of targeted Charge, or board-wide Charge depending on the setup.

Alternative Items

  • Potion Distillery — Can replace Library for the CDR support. A better choice with an Obsidian Vitality Potion, or when playing additional Potions.
  • Pendulum / Atmospheric Sampler — Mak's staple Charge engines, both excellent when built around accordingly.
  • Laboratory — Essentially functions as a Large size Scales. Less ideal, but oftentimes good enough.
  • Invulnerability Potion — A great utility inclusion to help prevent incoming damage. Haste/Charge/CDR support is recommended.
  • Shrinking Potion — Helps ensure that Vitality Potion has enough offense to break through tougher foes.
  • Fire Claw — Specifically paired with a Fiery Vitality Potion to create a massive secondary Burn threat.

Recommended Skills

  • Ammo — Gunner, Stocked
  • Charge — Explosive Potions (Fiery Vitality Potion), Flashpoint Corrosion (Toxic Vitality Potion), Flashpoint Ignition (Fiery Vitality Potion)
  • Cooldown Reduction — Rapid Relief, Pacifist
  • Disruption — Stop That!
  • Item Spawners — Dumpster Diving, Catalytic Converter
  • Max Health — Backroom Dealings

Problem Solving Priority: Offensive Enchant > Ammo > Startup Time > Crit Chance

Vat of Acid Build

Mak builds are often defined by their enchantments due to the abundance of Transform effects. This adds a lot of variance to the final board, so be sure to adapt to your own creations.

Essential Items

  • Vat of Acid — This has a solid output once you can stack enough unique Types. Get familiar with Mak's item pool, and keep an eye out for off-hero vendors.
  • Boiling Flask — A necessary component for ensuring Vat of Acid only needs to go off once (or twice).

Upgrade Priority: Vat of Acid > Potion Distillery > Invulnerability Potion

Recommended Items

  • Potion Distillery — Provides board-wide Cooldown Reduction and solves Ammo for utility Potions.
  • Flying Potion — The ideal source of Haste to help improve startup time.
  • Invulnerability Potion — Can help stay alive long enough for the Burn/Poison to tick down.

Alternative Items

  • Pendulum / Atmospheric Sampler — Both are powerful Charge engines if you can create a strong loop with them (and manage the limited space).
  • Scales / Laboratory — More flexible Charge support options. Scales is preferred over Laboratory due to the size.
  • Excavation Tools — An easy Small inclusion that can Charge a Relic-tagged Vat of Acid.
  • Fire Claw / Cauldron — These are optional secondary threats, offering a much higher output in exchange for utility space.
  • Strength Potion — Can double Vat of Acid's output if you're able to solve the Cooldown timing. Insect Wings and/or Feathers can help.
  • Hourglass — Solid CDR support at Small size, but it does have positioning requirements.
  • Library — Only usable if you can avoid selling any Weapons after acquiring Vat of Acid.

Recommended Skills

  • Ammo — Gunner, Stocked
  • Charge — Explosive Potions, Flashpoint Corrosion, Flashpoint Ignition, Mixed Message
  • Cooldown Reduction — Archeologist
  • Crit Chance — Big Numbers
  • Disruption — Frostfire, Initial Chill, Net Launcher
  • Haste — Quick Ignition, Quick Study
  • Item Spawners — Dumpster Diving, Catalytic Converter
  • Max Health — Backroom Dealings
  • Shield — Toxic Shield

Problem Solving Priority: Unique Types > Startup Time > Ammo > Crit Chance > Sustain (Defensive Enchant)
