Methodology
Potions are one of the strongest resources available to the player in Slay the Spire 2. A one time burst of power can be the difference between survival and getting sucked into the maw of an Insatiable sand worm. Here's how we're ranking them:
Tiers are sorted outside of usual "S to D" rankings. This is due to the strength of potions varying wildly at different stages of the game. A potion in a tier below is not necessarily weaker than a potion above it, so the ordering inside the the tier is more strongly considered. A potion may be exceptionally strong in specific fights, but not broadly useful in all, Its ranking may be affected by this, but it does not make the potion bad. As always, this game is extremely situational, you strongly need to consider which fights your specific run struggles in, and buy/hold potions that solve that encounter.
Please note this list WILL include event potions, with the context of their events considered. If you would like a full explanation of any potion's ranking, check out the video guide for more details!
Ranking
Good Always: The best of the best. These Potions are highly sought after regardless of the situation you're in, and are extremely versatile and/or powerful effects
Good Early: Potions in this tier are very powerful, but usually only during Act 1 and sometimes early Act 2. They may fall off considerably in the end game and become weak quickly once your deck develops.
Good Late: Potions in this tier are quite powerful late game and are often worth holding for boss fights and the end of the run. Can be invaluable but require more deck development. If you obtain these early they are often better than nothing, but not exceptional.
Niche/Average: Either overly situational or not stat-ed well enough to make it into the above tiers. Not useless, but may only be useful inside of specific runs/ fights. It is very likely you would rather have something else. They also might come at a significant opportunity cost.
Mediocre: Below par and/or extremely situational.
