Heellooo internet, this is the Unholy Coiling Tendrils Elementalist, one of the strongest contenders vs the insane Winter Orb meta for 3.29.
Build Overview:
The build revolves around
Lightning Tendrils of Eccentricity,
Coiling Whisper and
Unholy Trinity Support. This alternate version of lightning tendrils has a very very powerful hit every 5 pulses, and it is a guaranteed crit as well, however the damage of the regular pulses is Very low in comparison. To make this feel good, we need a massive amount of cast speed, which is where the ring comes in.
Coiling Whisper lets you eat a soul per enemy power when your curse expires on them. We utilize this with a level 1
Hextouch Support, level 1
Temporal Chains (it is the lowest duration curse) and
Less Duration Support. This makes the curse last just around 1 second. This linked with our movement skill lets us quickly zip around at the start of the map to get our souls, and then just absolutely BLAST through everything. Since tendrils is not a skill with massive aoe 360 coverage, when we blink into a pack of monsters there will usually be a straggler or 2 behind our cone, and that is how we will maintain soul upkeep. This is best in juiced content.
Coiling whispers comes with a big downside of your curses no longer having any effect. This downside is completely negated using the
Unholy Trinity Support which makes you ignore monster resistances completely. The modifier on a
Duskdawn staff gives us 20% of elemental gained as chaos, which is enough of a split combined with chaos dmg on jewels to give us full triple unholy trinity resonance.
However, coiling whisper is a relatively common Uber boss drop so it wont be available day 1-2, which is completely fine. Early on you will just use regular
Lightning Tendrils combined with elementalist's big aoe buffs, cast speed buffs from golem, and even more cast speed with
Righteous Fire of Arcane Devotion it makes this build feel Incredibly strong and I'm surprised it went completely under the radar for so long.
Offences and Defenses:
The guaranteed crit on the 5th pulse of Both versions of Lightning Tendril means we can use
Marylene's Fallacy a very common unique to get all the crit multi for the build, with no downside.
After this we scale as much cast speed as possible on the early variants, and when we get to the coiling whisper ring we swap all our jewels into the newly buffed Abyss jewels for an absurd amount of damage.
The build also uses a very common unique staff early on,
Xirgil's Crank with
Wicked Ward to get alot of damage and defense, and later swapping to the newly buffed
Duskdawn so we can scale block and get alot of damage and defense out of that as well.
Levelling:
The build starts out as a regular Righteous Fire elementalist shell, actually starting with
Fireball in act 1, and fully swapping to
Righteous Fire and the buffed
Scorching Ray in act 2. All you need to do is craft Fire resistance on all your gear, and keep picking up blue and yellow items to vendor for more transmutes to keep crafting more fire res.
With the changes to socket colors, finding gear in campaign will be incredibly easy and you can use full armour gear without having to worry about not getting enough blue sockets.
Once you hit act 4 and get your golems, you will go grab the
Liege of the Primordial ascendancy, as well as the
Golem Commander node on the tree, equip
Summon Stone Golem
Summon Chaos Golem
Summon Flame Golem and
Summon Lightning Golem and these will solve all your regen, damage, aoe, and mana recovery issues for the rest of the campaign, and the game pretty much.
You will be swapping to Lightning Tendrils around 2nd lab, by then you should have enough tiny bits of currency to pick up a
Xirgil's Crank and
Marylene's Fallacy. You can skip the amulet and take
Elemental Overload early on, but the amulet is ALOT of damage. I plan on running some heist in act 6, get a few chaos orbs, and buy those 2 uniques and full swap then. The PoB contains RF of arcane devotion as I found that in 2nd lab, if you dont have it then you can just skip it until you get one later.
When you reach 3rd lab, you want to farm it for a while to get
Righteous Fire of Arcane Devotion this is the best spot to farm it at because it will also let you farm gear that you will be able to use for the first half of your time mapping.
When you finish campaign, you will be swapping off of haste since you now have Arcane devotion RF giving you the cast speed, and instead switch to
Wrath and
Discipline instead.
After that is it just smooth sailing, upgrade your gear as you go, the build is very tanky so dying will be rare so you'll level up pretty easily.
Once you reach red maps, your first priority will be to get a
Brutal Restraint (Balbala The Traitor) you dont need any specific passives here early on (the good ones are in the gearing notes) you just need the keystone. Once you have that, you can transition into a low life setup and just start omega blasting without needing ANY resistances on your suffixes. This stage of the build should be comfortable enough to do all content and farm whatever you need to for the Endgame version with the coiling whisper.
I recommend watching my video as I go over the details of that in there, and it is much easier to understand how the tech works when you see it happening.
Important Levelling Tips:
Make sure you are levelling a lightning tendrils gem in your weapon swap, along with the first 3 support gems it needs. Also level a less duration support and a lightning warp and a Arrogance support. This should be very easy to do just get 2 3 links and put your gems in them.
Once you have swapped to tendrils in mid campaign, you want to be levelling a Wrath and Discipline aura in your weapon swap because you will be swapping to them at the end of campaign.
Buffs in 3.29?
The skill is getting roughly a 50% more damage buff, and 15% more cast speed, roughly equating to almost 80% more damage overall. In my playtesting it already felt like a build that is completely op in the endgame, so these buffs will just make it insane. The POB config does have these buffs accounted for, if my math for them is correct.
They have added the Rolling Tempest keystone which could be very good to pick up before swapping to the unholy trinity setup, will need to pob it to see if the damage range is too wide to make up.
There is a PACT OF LYCIA gem that could make this build be even stronger for single target, but we dont yet know all of the afflictions it can give so I am not adding it in yet. I'll keep this guide updated with few findings.
Possible Concerns?
The mana costs could be a problem. I have overcompensated my mana regen and recovery in the guide just in case the new mana cost efficiency stuff sucks, so you shouldnt have to worry. If the mana cost efficiency stuff is Good then we will actually be able to reinvest some of the points on the tree into more damage or defense.
Skill Rotations:
The playstyle for mapping is simple.
Lightning Warp into a pack, zap it with
Lightning Tendrils, lightning warp to next pack. In the endgame setup its the same thing, but instead of Warp you will be frost blinking instead.
You can also, just hold down
Lightning Tendrils and never let go of the button. When you use your movement skill it will just quickly cast it, and immediately start casting Tendrils again as long as you never let that button go. I show this in the video too if you got confused with the wording here.
For bossing, early on you will be using a Arcanist Brand for your debuffs and curses, and then just standing in place on top of your
Sigil of Power and using
Lightning Tendrils. If the boss moves just move after it with your movement skill and continue.
With
Coiling Whisper, you will want to first
Frostblink of Wintry Blast on the boss, wait a sec, do it again, wait a sec, do it again. this will give you your full 45 souls, and then you blast it to pieces. If this is a very tanky boss, or an uber boss, you will need to blink on top of it again after 4 seconds to re-apply the curse and not start losing your souls. I am considering dropping sigil of power for the new pact skills since having to blink out of your sigil zone sometimes could feel bad if you are fighting uber bosses. We will see.
Gearing Overview:
The main stats you want on gear is high armour energy shield. Your amulet and weapon are all set as uniques, focus on getting high crit multi on the
Marylene's Fallacy and high elemental damage gain as chaos and block chance on the
Duskdawn.
For your rings, Cast speed is the king for all stages of the build before the endgame whispering coils setup. All the stats that i have on the rings are mandatory stats, you Need the mana regen rate and that can only roll on rings.
The build also is very attribute starved, so you will need attributes on your gear. Get them anywhere you can or on jewels.
Once you reach the late red map blasting setup with
Brutal Restraint (Balbala The Traitor), you dont need anything anymore all the armour gear is just prefixes with 0 suffixes, only a crafted suffix. and the ring is only suffixes with a crafted prefix.
The endgame setup you need exactly 88 Strength and 33 dex somewhere on your gear.
