Build Overview

The Vaal Ice Nova of Frostbolts Occultist can do all content and do it well, using Vaal Ice Nova for clear and Ice Nova of Frostbolts primarily for single-target DPS. These are conveniently combined into a single skill gem.

See this guide for the leaguestart version: https://mobalytics.gg/poe/profile/camaronincheese-fs849b/builds/3-29-vaal-ice-nova-of-frostbolts-occultist-leaguestarter

Notes for all budgets:

If you're doing an easier farm and just want mega AOE and clear, swap out Inspiration Support for Vaal Temptation Support and swap out Badge of the Brotherhood for Ashes of the Stars. You should easily be able to tank the damage from Vaal Temptation Support, so long as you have a recover ES on hit Watcher's Eye and an ES pool of 5000+.

You can also reduce the DoT further by taking the Arakaali and Ralakesh pantheons, and Lethe Shade on the passive tree if it's still too much for you.

Getting %phys reduction is also good for tanking the damage. You can get that on your chest, from endurance charges, and from a watcher's eye pretty easily. Though the ES recovery on hit watcher's eye is way better in my opinion, since you'll actively recover as the nova is cascading.

This results in the giant AOE cascades that you see in my video. You'll notice that the AOE for the boss showcases is smaller, and that's because I focus more on the DPS than clear for those guys.

Important things to keep in mind for the build:

Your mana regen needs to be 2x your mana cost per second if you're using spell echo. And it needs to be 3x your mana cost per second if you're using greater spell echo.

This is because the echoes take place on your frostbolts and not from you, which is how we get so many hits and so much damage with this build. You're actually casting twice as fast as you normally would with normal spell echo, and three times as fast with greater spell echo, because the locked casting animation you normally get with spell echo doesn't happen with this skill.

These aren't repeats, so things like the caster mastery where the final repeat has increased AOE doesn't work. it's an expand instead, technically speaking.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

You want to run as low of a level clarity as possible to fit everything in at the high end without needing to spend passive points on mana. You have some options here.

Mana isn't a dead stat for us. Higher mana means we can run a higher level clarity. Also means higher base mana regen.

Mana regen tattoos are helpful if you can't get mana regen in other places

We do have another wheel for mana reservation efficiency by the staff mastery in the top left of the passive tree we can take if needed, but you'll need to sacrifice passive points for it

---------------------------------------------------------------------

The skill DPS estimation listed in Mobalytics is for a single ice nova. So multiply that by 4 for Spell Echo Support, or by 6 for Greater Spell Echo Support

MAP MODS TO AVOID:

These are technically doable. But annoying and we don't want them.

1. Cannot regenerate life or mana. You can take a mana flask into the map if you HAVE to run the map. But it's bad.

2. Monsters steal charges. Can be done, since you generate power charges extremely quickly. But still quite annoying

3. Less armour and block. Again, can be done. But makes you much less tanky. Why is there no "less evasion" map mod?

4. Reduced max resistances. If you're scaling map effect a ton, this can reduce your resistances by an insane amount. Which again, can be done. But you risk dying a lot more easily.

Strengths and Weaknesses

  • Clear multiple screens with one button
  • Decently fast mapper with Frostblink of Wintry Blast
  • All-rounder. Can do all content, including Ubers.
  • Gets quite tanky at the top end
  • Semi 2-button setup needed for high single target DPS. You don't cast frostbolt very often.
  • A bit annoying to play on a low budget

Build Variants

This should be around 25 div, so long as you self craft the gear.

Ralakesh's Impatience (Frenzy) - 40c

Badge of the Brotherhood - 50c + 4 div for Charisma anoint. Can anoint Ash, Frost and Storm instead on a super low budget

Rare gear is really cheap if you craft it yourself. Below are the basic crafting steps for each piece:

Crafting supplies needed:

At least 1 million Thaumaturgic Dust

At least 500k gold

100+ transmutes

20+ augments

100+ scourings

20+ regals

20+ exalts

200k+ Sulphur

~5 Deafening essences of Loathing

~5 Deafening attribute essences

Maybe some orbs of unraveling or orbs of remembrance if the base market dries up and you need to make your own memory strand bases

Divine Crown:

Get a divine crown with memory strands: https://www.pathofexile.com/trade/search/Allflame/9zRbD2nYfK

Use Deafening Essence of Loathing WITH the AllFlame crafting bench. If you don't hit some decent mods, then choose the option that preserves the most strands and repeat. If it uses all the strands, then get a new base.

Repeat until you get some decent defenses on prefix, and then some resistances or strength/dex. We don't really need int on gear, but if you hit that, you can change it to dex or str with a ducat at the allflame crafting bench

Paladin Gloves:

Same thing as above: https://www.pathofexile.com/trade/search/Allflame/zbrlorRKc4

Use either a deafening strength or dex essence on them with the AllFlame crafting bench. Same as above.

If there is an open prefix, craft increased AOE and area damage.

Sacred Chainmail:

This one is a bit more complicated. For the low budget, here is what I would do:

Buy a few ilvl86+ chest pieces: https://www.pathofexile.com/trade/search/Allflame/G6Grb5dDUb

Buy a few base percentile 80+ sacred chainmail bases with high memory strands: https://www.pathofexile.com/trade/search/Allflame/d86K4ewoFJ

Recombinate the two together with unpredictable. You want to hit an ilvl 86+ sacred chainmail with high memory strands. You can scour and then trans + alt spam the higher ilvl base until it hits a low tier mod so that it's cheaper to recombinate

Scour + trans spam in the allflame crafting bench until you hit either T1 flat armour + ES or t1 % armour + ES

If it doesn't hit, then grab the option that preserves the most memory strands, scour, and trans again.

The reason we scour + trans is so that it doesn't add any intangibility, and because you'll use relatively little to no memory strands per attempt

When you do hit, if there is an open suffix, then hit it with an augment and take the best option

After that, hit it with a regal in the allflame bench and look for the other high armour + ES mod. If you don't hit, then grab a good suffix if it's an option. Then craft a third prefix and exalt with the allflame bench.

If you get T2 or even T3 as an option for armour + ES and it leaves a lot of memory strands, that is completely fine. We'll use an orb of unraveling and try to upgrade that mod.

And then the crafting branches wildly from here. What you're looking for, is 3 good prefixes. That's the goal. Anything else is a bonus.

If your suffixes need to be redone, then you can reroll them with eldritch currency. Or, my personal favorite if you have some currency to spend, is to lock the prefixes by crafting Prefixes cannot be changed, and then reforge physical at the harvest bench. This guarantees a %phys damage reduction mod. You may need to do it several times though, or combine it with eldritch currency, and can eat your divines quickly. You've been warned.

Stygian Vise Belt: Ideally, you want armour + ES prefixes, and then resistances and/or attributes if needed on the suffixes. If there is an open prefix, then use a redeemer exalt in the allflame bench to try and hit another good prefix, like damage against chilled enemies.

Cogwork Ring with curse on hit:

This is also an easy craft. Buy a redeemer influenced Cogwork Ring, or depending on prices, a normal cogwork ring and a redeemer exalted orb.

Make the ring a redeemer influenced ring with the exalted orb

Reforge caster at the harvest bench until you hit curse on hit and maybe some other good mods. And then finish the craft with the crafting bench and/or the allflame bench with exalted orbs.

The only 2 mods the ring can hit with reforge caster is curse on hit and cast speed, which is why we use that one.

+1 power charge ring:

You're just looking for any power charge ring that has some strength, dex, and/or res on it. You should hopefully have good enough suffixes on other gear to not need much here, so just look for what you need. Should be 3-10 div, depending on how much you need on the ring.

For your staff, just use a well rolled Taryn's Shiver for now. It gives more than enough damage for what it is. These are around 1 div.

How it Plays

Mapping: Frostblink into or beside a pack and activate Vaal Ice Nova. Follow the cascade.

Bossing: Cast Frostbolt, then repeatedly cast Ice Nova of Frostbolts while refreshing the projectiles as needed.

Dense-content setup: Use Vaal Temptation Support, Ashes of the Stars, and/or the 40% Increased AoE wheel in the top right when single-target damage is less important

How it Works

Vaal Ice Nova is our primary mapping skill. You run into a pack, press the “get exploded, nerds” button, and each enemy hit produces another smaller nova around them. Those novas hit more enemies, which produce more novas, and the chain can continue for up to five generations

This leads to some massive clears and some massive damage. My current Vaal Ice Nova averages around two million damage per hit, and in dense packs, monsters can get blasted by dozens of overlapping novas. So the burst potential with high pack size is immense

If i'm doing content that I know has a lot of pack size, I'll usually change a few things around on the build. Like swapping out Inspiration Support for Vaal Temptation Support. And taking the 40% inc AOE wheel on my passive tree. And swapping out Badge of the Brotherhood for Ashes of the Stars

This sacrifices average hit damage for more clear and more cascades.. but we have more than enough for most content by the time we reach the high budget

-------------------------------------------------------------

We also have Ice Nova of Frostbolts.. which can be used for clear, certainly. Since the AOE is prodigious here too. As is the damage.

But this is mostly used for single target damage. We get some pretty crazy high DPS with this skill with not much investment, and can even exceed 100m pinnacle boss DPS at the top end

How this skill works, is you cast Frostbolt manually like a pleb... and then cast ice nova on those frostbolts

Ice Nova of Frostbolts expands from up to two Frostbolt projectiles. With Spell Echo Support, it expands again from those same 2 frostbolts, giving us four damage instances per manual cast. With Greater Spell Echo Support, each frostbolt we cast on produces three expansions, giving us six total novas per manual cast

Normally, Spell Echo Support makes your character perform the repeat animation. With this skill, the repeat becomes another expansion from the same frostbolts, freeing us up to begin the next manual cast immediately. That’s great for damage, but it also means we spend mana twice as quickly with Spell Echo Support and three times as quickly with Greater Spell Echo Support

As a rule of thumb, you want mana regeneration per second equal to at least twice your mana cost per second with Spell Echo Support, or three times with Greater Spell Echo Support

And the final FYI for Ice Nova of Frostbolts - these additional expansions are not technically repeats, so repeat-specific bonuses, such as Greater Spell Echo’s additional damage and area per repeat, do not apply to them
