Path of Building Code

Build Overview

The Ghostly Artillery Ward Stacker is a fun and mobile Mapper capable of tanking near-infinite Damage as long as it has something to hit back. Offering an Autobomber Playstyle for fast Mapping, but it is capable of swapping to a stationary projectile-spamming and tanky single-target stance to deal with anything the game throws at you.

This Character is built around the new unique Ghostflame Blade Dread Captain's Cutlass, specifically the special Mod only rollable on it: "Trigger Level 20 Ghostly Artillery when you Attack with this Weapon"

This Modifier is the only Trigger that happens on Attack, regardless of whether it hits or misses. Which means this skill can be used both as an Autobomber by triggering with Leap Slam and for Single Target with Molten Strike. The Skill Ghostly Artillery also comes built in with a special Version of Volley Support, which allows each Projectile to deal individual Damage! While not noticeable on its own, due to the parallel flight path, combined with Returning Projectiles Support or Nimis it allows each Projectile to converge on return and hit the same Enemy multiple times!

The only Downside of this Skill is that it locks both Weapon Slots with Ghostflame Blade and The Squire to have a 7-Link. As a result, it comes with low base Flat Damage. To mitigate this downside, one of several Stacking Packages has to be chosen. While Strength Stacking is an obvious choice with Replica Alberon's Warpath and later even with a shaper influenced Ghostflame Blade and Original Sin, the Ward Stacking option is way more interesting.

Ward Stacking got a HUGE Buff in 3.29 with the addition of Vestigial Uniques. Both Faithguard and Nightgrip transfer their Important Mod to other Uniques. Nightgrip Damage gets nerfed by 5%, BUT we lose the downside of Damage bypassing our Ward, which means we can combine it with Runic Boon "5% Chance to Restore your Ward on Hit".

Concluding in a near-immortal build, cause of the many Cannon Hits it causes each Second, and a very flexible Ascendancy Choice with several good options.

Gear Overview

Weapon and Shield

Dread Captain's Cutlass Ghostflame Blade and The Squire

The Unique Ghostflame Blade can be used with Vesper as if it were a Rare; this means it can be fractured, fossil crafted, and so on just like any other Rare.

We require 2 Mods on this Item and have 2 additional super-high-value Modifiers.

The best approach to craft it is to chaos roll for the Ghostly Artillery Mod and fracture it,
then use either Essence of Zeal for T0 Attack Speed or Fossils(Serrated, Metallic, and Corroded)

Use a The Squire to support Ghostly Artillery with 3 additional Support Gems

Ward Payoff

This build is a Ward Stacker, using it for both defenses and Damage. For the Damage a Nightgrip is required. However it's downside kills your survivability completly. Use the Legion Timeless Conflict to turn it into a different glove. Asenath's Gentle Touch, Snakebite or The Embalmer are Viable Options. Personaly preffer Snakebite, it's fairly common and almost all Stats on it benefit the build.

Ward Gain

Ward Rares don't actually give that much Ward; the best Way to get a LOT of Flat Ward is Ynda's Stand, preferably, Defense Quality and Volatile Corrupted, with a HIGH Armour/Evasion Hybrid Body Armour. My body Armour gives ~5.2k Flat Ward!!! Highly recommend using an overquality Conquest Lamellar crafted with Dense Fossils & Vesper.

While Adrenaline from Olroth's Charge is neat, we do need Resistances and Flat Life somewhere, so the Boot Slot has to be a rare Runic Sabatons with High Life, Ward and Triple Resistances, crafted Movement Speed suffices.

Scale that Flat Ward with Faithguard, which can also be Vestigal into any decent Helmet like Goldrim or Starkonja's Head (Any Helmet that gives Life, Evasion or Resistances), while retaining its one important Line. "Increases and Reductions to Maximum Energy Shield instead apply to Ward"

This plus a The Light of Meaning (Energy Shield) in either the Ranger or Shadow Jewel Socket to double our Ward.

Finally, use a new Eyes of the Greatwolf (Life) which rolls any 2 new Talisman Modifiers to get %Global Defenses (which does affect Ward) and preferably Pierce to save 3 Passive Points.

Rings

Nimis is a must-have. This turns Ghostly Artillery from a gimmick skill into a usable one!

For the other Socket, any Ring that fixes Resistances and Attributes works. You do not require a Helical Ring if you use a good Lethal Pride (Kaom Strength of Blood) to fix your Strength.

Flasks

One Iron Flask with Use on Savage Hit. This is our automated Emergency Button; sadly, it doesn't work for DoTs, which remain the only real weakness of this build. If, for any case, we get hit twice in between us hitting something to regain Ward, the Flask Procs give a Temporary Ward Boost and reset Ward to active.

Ghostly Artillery works with Tinctures due to using the Ghostflame Blade Stats, I recommend using a Poisonberry Tincture with Attack Speed.

For the remaining Flask Spots, you can use Silver Flask, Jade Flask and Quicksilver Flask or Progenesis

If you do not have a CB Immunity Jewel, use a Divine Life Flask with CB Removal!!!

Jewels

This build requires a The Light of Meaning (Energy Shield) and Lethal Pride (Kaom Strength of Blood). Depending on what's available, the Lethal Pride can be socketed in either the Ranger or Shadow Slot. Prioritize Flat and % Strength on it. This build requires at minimum 173 Strength to use the Conquest Lamellar.

In your Cluster Slots, you want 2 Large Cluster Jewel with Damage while wielding a Shield with Prodigious Defence and Martial Prowess and either Fuel the Fight or Feed the Fury OR
Chaos Damage with any Combination of 30% increased Chaos Damage.

4 Medium Cluster Jewel with Chaos Damage over Time and Wasting Affliction & Wicked Pall. They are best bought or randomly rolled when rolling with Chaos Reroll.

This build needs 111 Intelligence for Added Chaos Damage Support, if possible, get Intelligence on your Clusters

Finally, finish the last Socket with 2x Replica Reckless Defence and 2 Rare Cobalt Jewel (%Life, % Energy Shield, Intelligence, and Attack Speed, or any form of Chaos Damage

Ascendancy

This Build has 2 Viable Ascendancies

My Pathfinder

I ended up going with a Pathfinder for Nature's Reprisal and Master Toxicist as the 'classic' Poison approach. I already had a Deadeye, and it worked perfectly fine for me. However, during the Theorycrafting we considered an even better Option.

That said, Pathfinder felt A-OK for anyone wanting to invest a decent amount into the build, but don't push it to the limits of Crazy Items.

Gladiator

Gladiator with Lucky Block(More Than Skill) and further Investment to reach Spell & Attack Block Cap should mitigate the chance of being hit twice in a Single Frame by massive Hits, leaving the only chance for this build to die to high Damage DoT we can't mitigate, like Awakener DoT Fields.

If Damage feels lacking War of Attrition can be allocated; however, I only recommend Gladiator to those pushing this Build to its limits.

Bloodline

Olroth Bloodline is mandatory for this build!!!

Runic Boon: Boon of the River with every Projectile of Ghostly Artillery hitting will result in almost permanent Ward Uptime during any Map and Boss Encounter.

Additionally, depending on the Gear and Max Life Enhanced Starlight is a viable consideration. I have not been using it, but it could be decent for those pushing the Build even further

Trigger Setup

Ghostly Artillery Triggers on almost any Attack Skill. Sadly it doesn't work with Whirling Blades(Bug?) and Shield Charge(cause it uses the Shield, not the Weapon)

Our only option to both move around and trigger Ghostly Artillery is Leap Slam

For Single Target or when opting to go stationary, like when clearing an Abyss or an Allflame Encounter, Molten Strike is the Skill of Choice; it has a high Attack Speed Modifier and, just like Ghostly Artillery, works well with additional Projectiles and Nimis. Causing a lot of additional Hits for our Runic Boon and Life/Mana on Hit.

Use Both Skills in a 6Link for a Shared 5Link Result with

  • Faster Attacks Support and Momentum Support for High Attack Speed
  • Fortify Support for added Survivability
  • Lifetap Support for better Spammability and keeping Mana for our Cast on Ward Break Support Setup.

Ghostly Artillery (Sword + Shield)

Ghostly Artillery is a Projectile Attack with built-in Greater Volley Support and cannot be supported by Spell Supports and Greater Volley Support.

It is supported by any socketed Support in the Weapon and Shield(if using The Squire) without the Sockets being linked to each other.

Support it with the highest Damage supports available and Greater Multiple Projectiles Support for additional Projectiles. Which are both more coverage and more hits, for more on-hit Procs and Poison Stacks.

  • Added Chaos Damage Support, in dire need of Flat Damage
  • Void Manipulation Support and Vicious Projectiles Support for More Chaos Damage
  • Deadly Ailments Support for more Poison Damage
  • and Unbound Ailments Support for more Poison Duration

In a Budget Setup without Nimis replace Unbound Ailments Support with Returning Projectiles Support

Cast on Ward Break Setup

Cast on Ward Break Support is great to cast utility Skills as we consistently trigger it.

Link it in order to:

  • Blood Rage to generate Frenzy Charges while Mapping
  • Despair to curse Rares or Unique Enemies automatically
  • and Steelskin as an additional Defense Layer.

Make sure Despair is linked first to guarantee it being cast when needed. Steelskin is cast on subsequent Procs when the Mana for Despair isn't available. Alternatively, keep Precision Level Low enough to cast both Despair and Steelskin.

Utility Gems

Plague Bearer is more Single Target Damage, just toggle it whenever it reaches Maximum Stored Poison Damage.

Frostblink or Flame Dash based on Preference. I like Frostblink cause it can cancel Leap Slam Animation. (Keep Gem at Level 10)

Aura Setup

Tempest Shield for Spell Block Chance

Herald of Agony for Poison Chance

Haste OR Malevolence

  • Haste results in faster Mapping
  • Malevolence is more Damage!

Link above 3 to Enlighten Support Level 2+

Precision: Keep Precision Level lower to have enough Mana to cast Despair (60 Mana)

How it Plays

Mapping

Jump through the map with Leap Slam

When needing to be stationary for a league mechanic or boss, use Molten Strike

Toogling Plague Bearer whenever it is full is optional, but recommended whenever stationary.

Bossing

Position yourself on top of the Boss to cause maximum Projectile overlap on the Nimis Return.

On Pinnacle Bosses, pre-spam Projectiles 1 Second before the Boss is targetable (with Molten Strike)

If needed, reposition with Leap Slam and Frostblink

Toggle Plague Bearer whenever it is full.

How it Works

Ward

Ward is a one-time energy shield that mitigates any Incoming Attack for the Ward Amount.

If you have 500 Ward, any hit for 500 or less Damage will be fully consumed, and a Hit for 600, for example, would deal 100 Damage to Life.

Regardless of the size of the Hit, Ward has a Set Cooldown of 2 Seconds until it reactivates. Your Ward is visualized by a Yellow-Golden Glow on your Lifebar. When it is consumed, it will stop glowing, and the Ward Number greys out.

Ward can be instantly reactivated by using a Iron Flask or procing Runic Boon:Boon of the River.

It can also be turned permanent by using Olroth's Resolve, but it is linked to a heavy downside, which you would have to mitigate with something like Beacon of Madness (Two-Toned Boots Armour/Energy Shield)

Additionally, the Ward Recovery Speed can be adjusted in both directions with Items like Faithguard or Olroth's Charge.

Flat Ward can only be gained from Runic Bases, droped during Expedition Encounters or from Shipment to Kalguuran Ports.

Ward scales only of Global Defenses, but can be scaled by Energy Shield if using a Faithguard

Ward offers no offensive capabilities by default. But has been used in several Builds in combination with Nightgrip or as a so-called Ward Loop build, repeatedly breaking and recovering Ward to proc Skills with Cast when Damage Taken Support or Cast on Ward Break Support.

Ghostly Artillery

Ghostly Artillery is a Unique Skill granted by the Ghostly Arm Modifier, which can only be found on a Dread Captain's Cutlass. It is not bound to the base item Ghostflame Blade, but the Unique Version instead.

Similar to other unique Skill Items like Arakaali's Fang and Soulwrest it is supported by all applicable Supports socketed in it and works with The Squire and all Supports socketed in that too.

It is a Projectile Attack with 207% Damage Effectiveness and a 0.15 Second Base Cooldown. It will trigger on each Attack regardless if it hits anything.

According to PoE Wiki and PoEDB, it has an AoE Radius, and it Damage scales with Concentrated Effect Support

The Cannons spawn on skill trigger and take about 1 Second to fire the Projectile; this delay cannot be modified with Attack Speed or Duration Modifiers.
