Limit is a keyword in Path of Exile 2 that refers to a cap on specific effects from Skills.

Some Skills and other mechanics in Path of Exile 2 have a Limit assigned to them to cap the total amount of effects that can persist at any one time. For example, by default you can only have one
Firestorm active at a time due to the 'Limit 1 Firestorm' modifier on the Skill. Using the ability again when the Limit of effects has been reached will replace the oldest effect with a new one at the casted location.
Note: Limit is a cap that can be modified with rare modifiers to the Limit of Skills, unlike the similar terminology 'Maximum', which cannot be modified.
Rare modifiers can be utilised to improve the Limit on Skills, allowing several copies of their effects to persist at any one time. These modifiers include:
Idol of Uldurn
Soul MantleNote: some modifiers such as the one on the
Idol of Uldurn apply globally to all Limit Skills, while the majority are more specific to a category of Skills.
Some modifiers can remove the Limit entirely on specific types of Skills, such as the Tactician's
Whoever Pays Best, or the
Ancestral Bond Keystone. There's also the Unique Body Armour
Soul Mantle that will inflict random Curses on the wearer whenever their summoned Totems die, ignoring the normal Limit.
Unlike other Skills, Totems share a global Limit between different Totem type Skills by default.
For example
Spell Totem has a base Limit of 2, whilst
Shockwave Totem has a base Limit of 1. If you summon 2 Spell Totems you'll reach the base cap for the Skill, and summoning a Shockwave Totem will forcibly expire the oldest Spell Totem to make room for it.
Note:
Ancestral Warrior Totem instead has a maximum Limit that cannot be modified.
