Black Flag Resynced Character Story Lore

Edward Kenway

Born on March 10th in Swansea, Wales, Edward Kenway relocated with his family to a small farm outside of Bristol, England. After meeting Caroline Scott at 17, Edward married her less than a year later.

After falling back into bad habits such as drinking and fighting, Edward considered joining a privateering fleet. Despite Caroline's strong opposition, Edward departed in 1712. After being imprisoned on a treasure fleet by Spanish personnel, Edward and his new friend Adewale managed to steal the ship, renaming it to the Jackdaw.

Caroline Scott

Born in England in 1691, Caroline Scott first met Edward Kenway outside of the Auld Shillelagh, in the aftermath of a drunken altercation. After reluctantly agreeing to a date with Edward, the two quickly fell in love. They didn’t take long to marry, and they made it official in 1712.

Despite the two seeming destined to form a long, prosperous bond, Edward was soon pulled away by habits of recklessness and irresponsibility. Caroline tried to persuade Edward to stay with her and settle down for good, but he could not be convinced. To make matters worse, Caroline soon found out she was pregnant with a child. Sadly, this did nothing for Edward. He left for the New World, vowing to prove himself a man of quality.

Adewale

Born in Yoruba to a pair of enslaved parents, Adewale was quickly sold to the owner of a plantation after birth. Until his late teens, he worked in the fields day and night.

A turning point occurred on his 16th birthday, when a group of buccaneers raided the plantation, robbing the raw cane, sugar, and Reales. Adewale took this as the perfect opportunity to escape and boarded a nearby rowboat with a crate of sugar. To his surprise, the invading buccaneers actually decided to welcome Adewale aboard their vessel.

After his ship became stuck near Havana, Adewale was taken for questioning by Spanish authorities, who eventually sent him to Spain. During the trip, however, a hurricane intervened, and Adewale escaped thanks to the help of Edward Kenway, whom he would go on to serve as Quartermaster from this point onwards.

Stede Bonnet

Born in Barbados, the eccentric wealth inheritor Stede Bonnet didn’t always have it easy. After his parents suddenly died when he was just seven years old, Stede continued to tend to the plantation he now owned.

Continuing the tragedy, Stede eventually married and had a child with his wife, before disaster struck, leading to the death of his son.

As a means of coping, Bonnet took to the seas to live out his dream of becoming like the many sailors already out there. After his ship was suddenly ambushed by the British Navy, he was saved by one Edward Kenway…

Charles Vane

Born in England in 1680, Charles Vane’s exact birthplace is unknown, which further heightens his mystery. He began his privateering career sometime in 1715, before sailing to Nassau to meet former colleagues.

After Governor Woodes Rogers arrived in Nassau and issued the king’s pardon to all pirates living there, Vane refused to submit. He would, as a result, slip away from Nassau’s harbour, choosing to sail the Bahamas over the next few months.

Edward “Blackbeard” Thatch

Known by countless aliases, Blackbeard was born in England in 1680. He spent a large portion of his early life as a privateer, but eventually turned to piracy after finding himself short of work. Blackbeard eventually befriended a man named Edward Hornigold, sailing with him for the first time between 1714 and 1716.

Eventually, Blackbeard and the rest of his group, the “Flying Gang,” discovered the rotting corpse of the island known as Nassau and attempted to turn it into a place of liberty for all. After helping Hornigold hijack numerous vessels, Blackbeard finally got his own ship in 1717, named “The Adventurer.” Most bizarre of all, he found this ship already occupied by his new Quartermaster, Stede Bonnet.

Mary Read

Born in England, the infamous pirate Mary Read stands out as one of the most mysterious of all. No one really knows when she was born, but there is speculation ranging from almost a decade. According to an unreliable source, her mother began dressing Mary in boys’ clothes from a very early age, hoping to pass her off as another man’s son.

Anne Bonny

From the ever-colourful location of Ireland, Anne Bonny was born in 1702. Only a teen when she left for the British colonies, she set course for the West Indies at 16. Her new husband, Jack Bonny, a sturdy young man in his twenties, would accompany her.

The pair soon arrived in Nassau, where Jack found work at a small plantation nearby. Anne shifted her focus to cultivating her ability to load and daydream. Sadly, her beauty and indifference to propriety made her more of a romantic object to strangers than anything else.

It didn’t take long before her marriage was in shambles. Jack disappeared deeper into his work, and Anne grew more confident and sociable as a result. She then took a job as a barmaid at the Old Avery Tavern in the centre of Nassau, where she would eventually meet “Calico” Jack Rackham.
