Monster Hunter WildsArch-Tempered Nu Udra Guide - Weaknesses, Location, Armor & More

Overview

Arch-Tempered Nu Udra is a powered-up version of the Oilwell Basin Apex. It brings increased HP, damage, and some new dreadful attacks, which will be covered in this guide.

This monster only appears in the 9★ permanent event quest “Be Cursed, Ye Shadowy Flame”, available to HR 100+ players.

Additionally, a Free Challenge Quest featuring AT Nu Udra, “Burn in Blackest Hell”, runs from October 28th to November 11th, awarding players with exclusive pendants based on their quest completion time.

NOTE: Information about the regular Nu Udra is covered in its own guide. This one focuses on the specifics of the Arch-Tempered version.

This guide is written by @dxvis.

Location

AT Nu Udra only shows up in the event quest “Be Cursed, Ye Shadowy Flame” and in the free challenge quest “Burn in Blackest Hell”. Both take place in the Oilwell Basin during the Inclemency weather. The monster starts the hunt in its nest, and will roam across the lower strata of the Basin.

How to Prepare

Arch-Tempered monsters require better preparation than any others. We’ve covered everything you need to account for to make the AT hunts more bearable:

Meals

The Kunafa Meal Voucher is optimal because it offers Insurance Meal and Felyne Defender (Hi), two strong defensive Skills. Otherwise, eat Vegetables, Delishroom, and Eastern Honey to max out defensive capabilities.

Items

Bring healing items such as Mega Potion, Max Potion, Ancient Potion, Well-done Steak, and Dust of Life (if playing in multiplayer). Additionally, you’ll need Cool Drink to resist the hot climate.

Mantles

The Evasion Mantle and Mending Mantle are excellent choices for this fight as they’ll help you dodge or heal more easily.

Adaptability Skill

At level 2, this skill negates the fire pools and fire aura from AT Nu Udra, which would otherwise deal heavy damage over time to hunters. This skill allows hunters to ignore AT Nu Udra’s continuous chip damage, and is indispensable in the fight.

Other Skills

Equipping decorations for defensive Skills like Divine Blessing and Fire Resistance will greatly help you survive the fight. Evade Window will help you roll through Nu Udra’s precise slams, too.

Element

AT Nu Udra is weak to Water, so bring Mizutsune or Water Artian weapons.

Equipment

Arch-Tempered monsters should be faced with endgame weapons and armor. Don’t forget to upgrade your armor with Armor Spheres. Defensive Set Bonuses like Zoh Shia’s health regeneration can help further boost survivability.

New Mechanics to Look Out For

Arch-Tempered Nu Udra has several new attacks, mechanics, and combos. It is more aggressive than its natural counterpart, and has increased health and damage.

New Tentacle Slam Attacks

AT Nu Udra has three new slam moves:

  1. A new quick tentacle slam forward, which it signals by coiling one of its front tentacles up. You can roll sideways to easily dodge this one.
  2. A second, heavier slam which can be dodged by rolling to the side.
  3. A lunge slam that reaches further and has a bigger hitbox. Roll to the opposite side of Nu Udra’s attack.

The monster can perform these attacks alone or in succession. When it’s enraged, it will often perform the first slam, then reposition, and do the other two tentacle slams.

Keep an eye on AT Nu Udra’s position, as it can move around during the combo and make it difficult to dodge.

Oil Bomb

AT Nu Udra’s most characteristic move is its new Oil Bomb. It will let out its oil sack and create an oil pool in front of him. After a brief delay, it’ll jump backward and ignite the pool, causing it to explode. This attack can kill players in one hit, even at full health. Be ready to dodge out of it as soon as you see oil on the ground.

The oil bomb leaves behind fire on the ground for some time, which deals heavy damage over time while standing on it. The Adaptability skill at level 2 fully negates this fire environmental damage, making it a great defensive choice for this fight.

Double Slam and Oil Bomb Combo

When AT Nu Udra is enraged, it can chain up its double-slam combo and then perform its oil bomb move up close. This is the most dangerous variation of its combo, as players have little reaction time. Roll out of the oil pool to stay safe.

Fire Aura

When AT Nu Udra becomes enraged, it will gain a new fire aura that slowly chips away HP from hunters. Again, the Adaptability skill at level 2 fully negates this fire environmental damage, allowing hunters to stay on the offensive without worrying about their HP.

More Frequent Grab Attacks

AT Nu Udra will try to grab players more frequently, often after other attacks. If you see all its tentacles facing you, it means a grab is coming. This attach reaches in a long range forward, so move aside to avoid it.

If Nu Udra grabs you, press triangle repeatedly to get out before it’s too late.

Tips & Tricks

It Can Be Captured

AT Nu Udra can be captured once its health is low enough (a Skull will display over its icon on the map). Capturing saves a noticeable amount of time in a difficult fight.

Falling Stalactite

When Nu Udra moves to Area 14, drop the Stalactite to damage and knock it down.

Sonic Pods

Sonic Pods can stagger Nu Udra when it grabs you.

Calling the Seikret

Your Seikret will be your best friend in this fight. It allows you to run around Nu Udra, avoiding its attacks while healing or sharpening.

You can immediately calling your Seikret (D-Pad Up) after you’re knocked down, will let you survive lethal combos.

Avoiding AT Nu Udra’s Attacks

AT Nu Udra combines quick, precise attacks with wide sweeps and AoE fire blasts. Its tentacle attacks can be dodged if you see them coming: If it is a side-to-side attack, dodge away from it. If it is a front attack, dodge to the sides.

As soon as you see it charging up any of its fire blasts, move away from where it’s facing.

Temporary Wounds

Sometimes, after doing a body slam or failing a grab attack, AT Nu Udra will expose a temporary wound for a short time. You can punish this opening with a Focus Strike to knock it down.

Weak Spots to Focus

Arch-Tempered Nu Udra shares weak spots with its regular counterpart: Head and front tentacles.

Its head can be broken, and four of its tentacles can be severed.

Turf Wars

There are no monsters in the quest that can damage AT Nu Udra.

Armor Sets

AT Nu Udra's Set Bonus is Nu Udra's Mutiny = Bad Blood I / Bad Blood II which deals additional damage while the Resentment skill is active.
