For Malphite's runes, he benefits extremely well from defensive stats, especially Armor. Armor Seals and Armor Quintessences give him a huge boost during the early game, making him much harder to kill while also increasing the damage of his Ground Slam.

Magic Resist Glyphs can be used to help against AP-heavy opponents, while Magic Penetration Marks increase the damage of Malphite's abilities since a large portion of his damage is magic based.

While playing Malphite, we want to put the majority of our points into the Defense tree to make him even tankier. The bonus health, armor, magic resist, and damage reduction make him much harder to kill during the laning phase while allowing him to soak up even more damage for his team.

For our remaining points, we'll take the Offense tree. Malphite's Seismic Shard is his main poking tool, so the extra Ability Power and Cooldown Reduction help increase both its damage and how often you can use it, giving you a stronger laning phase.
