His poke damage is quite high and obnoxious for the enemy team to deal with. This poke can build up over time and makes it so that the enemy laner is forced to play in the cover of their minion wave.
His wave clearing potential is very high due to his W and Q. This allows him to clear up the waves pretty quickly and get lane priority, which allows him to help his team secure objectives.
Excels in fights taking place in chokepoints and close quarters as it allows him to quickly stack up his Passive. This combined with his Ultimate R can easily allow him to destroy the enemy team.
Very immobile and hence is vulnerable to layered crowd control. He can’t push up freely unless he already knows where the enemy Jungler is, otherwise, he will just be killed.
His E is his only source of self-peel. Misusing it makes him way more vulnerable to all-ins and can probably get him killed almost instantly if the enemy laner has some form of blink or ranged crowd control ability.
His Ultimate R roots him in place, making it very easy for enemy champions with ranged crowd control to interrupt his Ultimate R and get on top of him along with their team.

Harass the enemy throughout the laning phase with your W and Q. Your goal is to constantly harass the enemy whenever possible and get kills.
After destroying the bottom lane tower, rotate to the mid lane and try to take that tower. This will open up the map and give your team a gold lead. Poke and harass the enemy Mid laner and force them away from the objective to make it easier to secure the mid lane tower.
Whenever your Ultimate R is up, try to use it on the enemy lakers to get their health low. Ideally, poke them down first before using it to make it easier for you to kill the enemy.

Try to delay team fights for as long as possible while you harass the enemy and poke them down with your Q. If you can get them low, then you can commit to the team fight.
Keep a constant eye on what major objective is spawning next. If it’s spawning soon, make sure you place vision around the objective as quickly and as safely as possible before retreating to safety. Having vision around major objectives is key.
As a Support, you’re quite vulnerable and can easily be killed when going to ward, when you’re moving around the map, and when you’re alone. To reduce the chances of dying and getting caught out of position, try and stick with your team at all times.

Ward major objectives and place vision in high traffic areas in the late stages of the game. Keep them warded so you can see the enemy move around the map and see them starting the objective.
Stay with your team at all times. Avoid moving around the map alone so you do not get caught out. Getting caught out will result in your team having to play 4v5. Do not ward alone unless you know where the enemy is.
Peel for your allies as much as possible. Keeping them alive for as long as possible in team fights is a must in order to win the game.
Vel'Koz's level 6 is a massive powerspike as it lets him utilize his Passive fully. It is a great finishing ability that is best used against enemies who are clumped together.
His first item will give a massive boost to his overall effectiveness in the lane. It will increase his burst damage combo, and he can force enemies to recall abruptly quite frequently in the lane.
The greater the number of points in his Q, the greater his poke potential and overall damage output. Since his Q can slow targets, it can allow Vel'Koz to completely CC the enemy and destroy them.
Vel'Koz will have his Q maxed at level 9. This means that he will deal more poke damage and completely dismantle an enemy team from range.
He will have two points in his Ultimate R once he hits level 11. This means that Vel'Koz will use the Ultimate R more efficiently as a finishing move to get rid of low health targets.
Team fights are going to be really good for Vel'Koz due to his kit. If he manages to score a knock upon a target, he will probably kill them instantly with his team.
At level 16, Vel'Koz will have his Ultimate R maxed out. This means that he can now deal tons of damage from far away even if he gets one stack of his Passive on his enemy.
His damage output will be really high due to the number of items he possesses at that point in the game. He should focus on using the fog of war to poke out enemies first.
Vel'Koz will be extremely good in team fights, especially fights where he is playing around choke points. This means that he can apply his Passive stacks on multiple enemies, making it easier for him to kill a bunch of enemies together.
