Tahm Kench can absorb a lot of incoming damage in lane and in team fights with his E. If he activates it at the right time, he can have basically two health bars and be near impossible to kill.
His Ultimate R is very versatile. It can be used to save an ally, or catch somebody out of position. It is a great tool especially in mid and late game team fights
His W is very versatile. It can be used to escape skirmishes, get over walls, look for plays and many other things.
Tahm needs to ensure that he activates his E mid-fight. Activating it too late is pointless because the enemy will disengage, and you will waste the shield.
He is very immobile which means he is really easy to chase down even with his W up. If the enemy freezes the lane, he cannot do anything to escape an all-in/gank.
As Tahm Kench is a melee champion, laning against ranged champions is very hard for him as they can poke him down whenever he walks forward or positions somewhat aggressively. Ranged champions can also zone him incredibly well.

Play safe for the first few levels. You need time to come online and you shouldn’t be fighting unless you have a clear early advantage.
Once you have a few levels under your belt, you can start to play aggressive and look for aggressive plays. You benefit from extended trades, so try to go for them frequently.
Keep the minion wave closer to your side of the map throughout the early game. This is the best place for the wave to be as it offers you tons of extra protection

Split push during the mid-game and try to secure side objectives. Start grouping when your team needs you.
In team fights, either use your Ultimate R on an enemy if you can kill them or use your Ultimate R on a fed ally to keep them alive for longer.
Peel for your allies in team fights. As you’re a tank, you’re rather weak unless your carries are alive. Thus, keeping them alive is key in team fights. Be prepared to peel for them when necessary.

Peel for your carries to keep them alive for longer. If your allies die quickly, there will be little chance that you will win the team fight.
Your W will be on a shorter cooldown in the later stages of the game. If you can find an opportunity to do so, use it to catch out someone who is isolated and alone, too far forward or way out of position.
Ensure you soak up as much damage as possible in late-game fights. You will be very tanky and able to take a lot of damage before dying.
Tahm Kench's early game isn't solid as he won't be able to do much against poke damage dealt by ranged top laners. He won't be doing too much if the enemy decides to all-in him either.
Level six is a massive power spike as it offers a lot of kill pressure as his Ultimate R does a lot of damage to enemies swallowed by him. His W will allow him to exert a lot of pressure on the map as well. This means that he can try to all-in the enemy on his own now.
Level three is another significant power spike as it grants him access to all of his basic abilities. This means that he can do a lot more in the lane while using the lane brushes. He, unfortunately, won't be able to utilize his Passive well enough, though.
Once he adds two points in his Ultimate R, his kill pressure will increase significantly due to the amount of damage dealt by that ability.
His first ability will be maxed out at level nine. This offers a lot of kill pressure for Tahm Kench, and he can try to look for more frequent all-in and roams on overextended enemies.
Tahm will have completed multiple items during this stage of the game. This means that he will die a lot less while increasing the amount of consistent damage he deals to enemies during all-ins.
Tahm's tankiness in this phase of the game will be extremely high. He will be a reliable engager and can easily peel for his team as and when necessary.
Level sixteen will give Tahm Kench a considerable boost in his damage. He can easily duel enemies, incredibly squishy champions in the side lane.
Tahm Kench's abilities will have a really short cooldown on his abilities. This means that he can secure picks with ease on anyone. The poke damage on his Q is quite respectable as well.
