If in your arena you have 3 coloured barrels to use to your advantage to burn, poison and frostbite Cleaver, then definitely use these over time to gradually drain his health whilst using the tips I will talk about in the main guide below.
However, if like me, the barrels have glitched and they are no longer there to use to help with the fight, this guide will show you how to defeat Cleaver without any use of those barrels.
As soon as you have Cleaver in your sights just outside of the arena, lock onto him, make your way in and immediately use your Fire Magic on him. This will deal a good amount of damage and begin building up his burn before he even had chance to properly stand up.
Cleaver also has a Fire projectile attack and he will use this throughout the fight, it's best to use your Shield to block his fire attacks as blocking the fire will create a sort of fire bomb right in front of him, which can help increase his burn buildup when used effectively. However, the resulting flames can also increase your own burn gauge, so make sure you don't remain too close to them.
The Shield is also useful for reducing the amount of damage you take from Cleaver's other incoming attacks.
Try to keep Cleaver in and around the fire on the ground that we created by blocking his attacks, these will dissipate over time so make sure to keep blocking to make more fire pits to lure him into, to gradually build up his burn gauge. Filling this will steadily reduce his health over time.
Be careful not to let your own burn gauge fill. Keep your distance from the flames and move away when necessary to allow your burn gauge to decrease.
Keep an eye on the bottom left and right of the screen for when your abilities are ready to use, the yellow indicator tells us when they are ready to use again, so definitely do so at the right opportunity, either when he is staggered or there is a short window where he isn't attacking you.
Be patient during this fight, since blocking Cleavers attacks and dodging his mace can be the main focus when trying to getting those fire pits on the ground for him to burn in, attacking from you only comes when you have the window to do so.
Always heal up whenever you need to, making sure you aren't getting burned in the fire pits as this will gradually reduce your health too. This is when there can be too much to have to watch for on screen; your health, his health, his incoming attacks, is the fire ability ready, is Cleaver in the fire getting burned etc, so patience is key with this one.
The overall combination of the burn effect, Menacing Strike, Fire Magic and regular attacks on him, should be enough to finish him off.
