Overview

Combat in The Blood of Dawnwalker can feel unusual at first, especially because Coen fights differently depending on whether he is in Human or Vampire form. However, both styles become much easier once you understand how stamina, dodging and directional blocking work.

This guide covers the best early skills, Vampire perfect dodges, Human directional blocks, unblockable attacks and the progression systems that help make Coen stronger.

Special thanks to Dopamine Hunter for sharing the combat tips featured throughout this guide.

Best Early Skills and Stamina Management

Before investing heavily in damage, prioritise skills that improve your stamina. Two of the best early options are Endless Effort and Fleet of Foot.

Endless Effort increases your maximum stamina.

Fleet of Foot reduces the stamina cost of dodging.

Both perks remain useful during the day and at night, making them valuable regardless of which form you are using.

Attacking, dodging and certain defensive actions all compete for the same stamina bar. If you completely exhaust it, Coen becomes fatigued and his attacks become slower and less effective.

Avoid repeatedly attacking until your stamina is empty. A safer approach is to defend against an enemy’s attack, counter during the opening and then check your stamina before committing again. You should always preserve enough to dodge an unblockable attack or escape when a fight turns against you.

Vampire Combat and Perfect Dodges

Vampire combat focuses on mobility, dodging and aggressive counterattacks. Your best openings usually come from successfully avoiding horizontal attacks.

When an enemy swings from the side, dodge towards the incoming attack at the last possible moment. Correct timing triggers a Perfect Dodge, which costs no stamina and creates a short opportunity to counterattack.

Vertical attacks can be harder to time while you are still learning the combat system. Instead of trying to dodge through them, move backwards to create distance and wait for the attack to finish before closing the gap again.

Although Vampire form is fast and aggressive, regular dodges and attacks still consume stamina. Constantly attacking and evading will quickly leave Coen fatigued. Try to establish a rhythm, read the enemy, dodge correctly, counterattack and then briefly reset before committing again.

Human Combat, Directional Blocks and Unblockable Attacks

Human combat is more defensive and revolves around standing your ground with directional blocks.

Hold your guard without moving the left stick, as moving it selects a blocking direction. Once the enemy commits to an attack, read the directional indicator and move the stick towards the correct direction.

Input the block just before the attack connects to perform a Perfect Block. This leaves the enemy vulnerable and gives you an immediate opportunity to counterattack. Successful directional blocks do not consume stamina, making Human combat extremely efficient once you become comfortable reading attacks.

If you struggle to select the correct direction, you can use Omniblock instead. This automatically handles the direction of the incoming attack, but consumes stamina in return. It is useful while learning the game, although directional blocks are more efficient once you can consistently perform them.

Regardless of your form, always watch for the red skull icon. This signals an unblockable attack that cannot be stopped with directional blocking or Omniblock. These attacks must be dodged, so avoid becoming too aggressive and leaving yourself without enough stamina to react.

Human and Vampire Abilities and Healing

Coen gains access to different powers and healing methods depending on his current form.

During the day, Human Coen can use Witchcraft abilities such as Burning Blood. These spells provide additional offensive, defensive and battlefield-control options alongside his sword attacks.

Human Coen does not naturally regenerate his health, so you will primarily recover using food and other healing consumables found while exploring. Make sure you have enough supplies before beginning a difficult encounter during the day.

At night, Vampire Coen gains access to vampiric powers and much stronger mobility. He can also restore his vampiric health by drinking blood through abilities such as Voracious Bite or by using blood vials carried in his inventory.

Remember to prepare for the form you intend to use, as Human and Vampire Coen cannot rely on the same abilities or healing methods.

How to Unlock More Combat Skills

Levelling up rewards Skill Points that can be spent across three main development trees:

  • Swordmastery
  • Witchcraft
  • Vampirism

Swordmastery is particularly valuable early because many of its perks remain active during both the day and night.

However, Skill Points are not the only requirement for learning new abilities. Many Swordmastery and Witchcraft upgrades are locked behind Manuals.

Finding a Manual does not immediately teach you its ability. Instead, it makes that ability available to learn through the development tree. Manuals can be discovered while exploring, earned through quests or purchased from certain characters.

Time, Scouting Towers and Other Progression Systems

Time is an important resource in The Blood of Dawnwalker. Certain quests, conversations, activities and character upgrades advance the clock, while freely exploring the world does not.

Each day and night contains eight Time Segments. Actions that consume time are marked with an hourglass and show how many segments they will use. Since Coen only has 30 days and 30 nights to save his family, consider the cost before beginning an activity or spending time on an upgrade.

Exploration is still important, especially when searching for Scouting Towers. Reaching the top reveals nearby points of interest that can lead you towards quests, equipment, Manuals and other opportunities.

Scouting Towers must be completed at night because reaching the top requires Vampire movement abilities such as Shadowstep and Planeshift. Clearing them when entering a new region can help you decide where to spend your limited Time Segments.

Vampire progression is also tied to Corruption. Drinking blood increases Coen’s Corruption, making additional Vampirism abilities available to unlock. This can make Coen considerably stronger at night, but embracing his vampiric nature can also affect the story and influence the path he follows.

Finally, increasing Coen’s Infamy causes Brencis to issue new Edicts. These can make Vale Sangora more dangerous by adding enemy forces, military checkpoints or higher prices. Disrupting a territory also raises the anger of its ruling vampire and can eventually open a quest to confront them.

Progression is therefore about more than simply gaining levels. You must balance Skill Points, Manuals, Corruption, exploration and the consequences of your actions while deciding how to develop Coen.
