Topaz and Numby Character Guide

Character_Topaz__26_Numby_Introduction

Topaz and Numby is a Path of the Hunt Fire character released in patch 1.4.

Topaz and Numby is a powerful damage dealer that deals strong single target damage and can be built and played as a good carry in her own right or as a Sub DPS/support in follow-up focused teams. She especially excels in single target encounters against fire weak enemies where she breaks weaknesses extremely quickly.

Topaz’s main mechanic is that she summons her ally Numby who has its own turns at 80 speed and has its action advanced by 50% for every follow up attack performed. When Topaz’s ultimate is active the next 2 skills, basic attacks and ultimates will also advance Numby’s action forward.

Additionally, Topaz causes a single enemy to receive additional damage from follow-up attacks making her have excellent synergy with characters like Himeko, Kafka or Clara.

Why Play Topaz and Numby?

Pros

  • Strong single target damage, especially against fire weak enemies
  • Breaks fire weakness very quickly
  • Scales off ATK/Crit which are universal DPS stats many players may have farmed already
  • Can be played as a hyper carry or a Sub DPS/Support
  • Numby! Who doesn’t like trotters??

Cons

  • Lacks AOE damage
  • Slightly lower output than some other top tier carries

At a Glance

Topaz and Numby generally prioritizes building Crit and ATK%. Due to Numby being a large portion of Topaz’s total damage and Numby’s action getting advanced, Speed is not a priority. Topaz excels at dealing single target damage and is very powerful against fire weak enemies.

Basic ATK – Deficit…

Deficit...

Deals Fire DMG equal to 50%–110% of Topaz’ss ATK to a single enemy.

Skill – Difficulty Paying?

Difficulty Paying?

Inflicts a single target enemy with a Proof of Debt status, increasing the DMG it takes from follow-up attacks by 25%–55%. Proof of Debt only takes effect on the most recent target it is applied to. If there are no enemies inflicted with Proof of Debt on the field when an ally’s turn starts or when an ally takes action, Topaz will inflict a random enemy with Proof of Debt.
Numby deals Fire DMG equal to 75%–165% of Topaz’s ATK to this target. Using this Skill to deal DMG is considered as launching a follow-up attack.

Ultimate – Turn a Profit!

Turn a Profit!

Numby enters the Windfall Bonanza! state and its DMG multiplier increases by 75%–165% and CRIT DMG increases by 12.5%–27.5%. Also, when enemies with Proof of Debt are hit by an ally’s Basic ATK, Skill, or Ultimate, Numby’s action is Advanced Forward by 50%. Numby exits the Windfall Bonanza! state after using 2 attacks.

Talent – Trotter Market!?

Trotter Market

Summons Numby at the start of battle. Numby has 80 SPD by default. When taking action, Numby launches follow-up attacks on a single enemy target afflicted with Proof of Debt, dealing Fire DMG equal to 75%–165% of Topaz’s ATK.
When enemies afflicted with Proof of Debt receive an ally’s follow-up attacks, Numby’s action is Advanced Forward by 50%. The action Advance Forward effect cannot be triggered during Numby’s own turn.
When Topaz is downed, Numby disappears.

Technique – Explicit Subsidy

Explicit Subsidy

Summons Numby when Topaz enters the overworld. Numby will automatically search for Basic Treasures and Trotters within a set radius.
Using her Technique will regenerate 60 Energy for Topaz after Numby’s first attack in the next battle.
If Topaz is still in the team after using her Technique and defeating overworld enemies, a small bonus amount of credits will be added to the earned credits. A maximum of 10000 bonus credits can be received per calendar day.
After using her Technique and defeating enemies in Simulated Universe, additionally receive a small amount of Cosmic Fragments with a small chance to obtain 1 random Curio.

Eidolons

Topaz and Numby is a powerful character without any Eidolons and does not need them to excel. However for those looking to spend or save more additional copies of Topaz and Numby there are some added benefits. Topaz and Numby will perform well at E0 but here is a quick assessment of her Eidolons:

  • E1 – high impact
  • E2 – medium impact
  • E3 – low impact
  • E4 – medium impact
  • E5 – medium impact

Relics

Stat Priority

Topaz and Numby scales primarily off of ATK and Crit making her a fairly traditional character to build. Due to Numby’s action getting advanced Topaz does not want Speed as much as most carries.

Topaz and Numby ’s general stat priority is:

  1. Crit Rate (up to 50%)/Crit DMG
  2. ATK %
  3. SPD

Ideal Main Stats by Relic Type

  • Body: Crit DMG or Crit Rate
  • Feet: ATK%
  • Planar Sphere: Fire DMG%
  • Link Rope: ATK %

Cavern of Corrosion Sets

Set bonuses should ultimately just be thought of as additional substats, and the weight of 4-Pc sets is very low. Mixing and matching two different 2-Pc bonuses can often be more optimal than completing a 4-Pc set bonus if it allows you to use substantially better relics. It is recommended to use gear optimizers to assess which Relic pieces to use.

Relic Sets

Musketeer of Wild Wheat and Flamesmith of Lava-Forging

Musketeer of Wild Wheat

Flamesmith of Lava Forging

2 Piece: ATK increases by 12%.
2 Piece: Increases Fire DMG by 10%.

Fire DMG and ATK% are both excellent choices for Topaz,

Musketeer of Wild Wheat

Musketeer of Wild Wheat

2 Piece: ATK increases by 12%.
4 Piece: The wearer’s SPD increases by 6% and Basic ATK DMG increases by 10%.

Musketeer’s offering ATK% is excellent for Topaz however the SPD and Basic ATK DMG is less desirable. Overall a good accessible set that most players will have access to.

Firesmith of Lava-Forging and Messenger Traversing Hackerspace 2 Piece

Flamesmith of Lava Forging

Honkai Star Rail Messenger Traversing Hackerspace

2 Piece: Increases Fire DMG by 10%.
2 Piece: Increases SPD by 6%.

SPD is not the most desirable substat, so the above set combinations are recommended better.

Flamesmith of Lava-Forging

Flamesmith of Lava Forging

2 Piece: Increases Fire DMG by 10%.
4 Piece: Increases the wearer’s Skill DMG by 12%. After unleashing Ultimate, increases the wearer’s Fire DMG by 12% for next attack.

Fire DMG is excellent but the 4 piece bonus buffing skill damage is relatively low impact. There are strong options that are easier to farm.

Planar Ornament Sets

Inert Salsotto

Inert Salsotto

2-Piece: Increases the wearer’s CRIT Rate by 8%. When the wearer’s current CRIT Rate reaches 50% or higher, the wearer’s Ultimate and follow-up attack DMG increases by 15%.

Due to most of Topaz’s damage coming from Numby, the bonus follow-up damage is excellent. Her traces giving Crit Rate also makes it relatively easy to hit the 50% crit rate requirement.

Rutilant Arena

Rutilant Arena

2 Piece: Increases the wearer’s CRIT Rate by 8%. When the wearer’s current CRIT Rate reaches 70% or higher, the wearer’s Basic ATK and Skill DMG increase by 20%.

Rutiliant Arena is a very strong set for any DPS that cares about crit and Topaz is no exception. However, the Skill DMG is less beneficial for Topaz than many other characters as a large portion of her damage comes from Numby.

Space Sealing Station

Space Sealing Station

2 Piece: Increases the wearer’s ATK by 12%. When the wearer’s SPD reaches 120 or higher, the wearer’s ATK increases by another 12%.

The ATK% bonus is well utilized by Topaz and Numby and the party buff can be quite nice when she is being used as a sub DPS.

Light Cones

I Shall Be My Own Sword (5*)

I shall be my own Sword

Increase the wearer’s CRIT Rate by 18% and their follow-up attacks’ DMG by 30%. After the wearer uses a follow-up attack, apply the Tame state to the target, stacking up to 2 stacks. When allies hit enemy targets under the Tame state, every Tame stack increases the CRIT DMG dealt by 12%.

Topaz and Numby’s featured light cone is custom made for her and gives her everything she needs. This is her best in slot light cone offering Crit Rate, follow-up DMG and a party wide Crit DMG buff.

Cruising in the Stellar Sea

Cruising in the Stellar Sea

Whenever the wearer attacks, their ATK is increased by 8~16% in this battle, up to 4 time(s). When the wearer inflicts Weakness Break on enemies, the wearer’s DMG increases by 12~24% for 2 turn(s).

This cone is an excellent free to play option as it is available from the Herta Store and can easily be superimposed as a result. The stacking ATK buff and the DMG bonus are both well utilized by Topaz and Numby’s kit making it a fantastic choice for most players.

Swordplay (4*)

Swordplay

For each time the wearer hits the same target, DMG dealt increases by 8%, stacking up to 5 time(s). This effect will be dispelled when the wearer changes targets.

This cone provides a solid DMG buff and stacks quite quickly for Topaz making it the strongest 4* option and only slightly behind Cruising in a Stellar Sea.

Teammatess

Topaz and Numby can be played a traditional hyper carry to good effect with high enough investment, but is not quite as strong as some other top tier meta picks. She also can be played well as a Sub DPS/Support in follow-up focused teams.

Offensive Supports

Asta – High Synergy

Honkai Star Rail Asta

Asta provides ATK % and Speed for the party making her a solid choice. Additionally, her trace offers bonus Fire DMG for the entire team making her a very universal and powerful support for Topaz.

Tingyun – High Synergy

Honkai Star Rail Tingyun

Tingyun is one of the best supports for Topaz and Numby because she buffs damage for both Topaz and Numby and provides Energy for Topaz allowing her to ult more frequently. Tingyun excels in Topaz hyper carry teams and is a bit of a weaker option when Topaz is played as a Sub DPS as Tingyun can only buff one carry.

Silver Wolf – High Synergy

Honkai Star Rail Silver Wolf

Silver Wolf is an excellent offensive support and her ability to add Fire Weakness to enemies synergizes nicely with Topaz’s trace that improves her damage against fire weak enemies.

Pela – Medium Synergy

Honkai Star Rail Pela

Pela’s AoE defense shred is well utilized by Topaz and Numby but she has less to offer than some of the other supports.

Bronya – Low Synergy

Honkai Star Rail Bronya

Topaz getting more actions does help advance Numby, but the DMG buff that Bronya offers with her skill is quite underutilized making her a suboptimal choice for Topaz and Numby. Bronya is much better used elsewhere instead.

Defensive Supports

Luocha – High Synergy

Honkai Star Rail Luocha

Luocha is a very powerful healer and works nicely with any team, Topaz and Numby being no exception. Luocha can usually sustain the party with minimal Skill Point usage.

Fu Xuan – High Synergy

Fu Xuan

Fu Xuan with good investment should offer enough sustain for Topaz and Numby teams to stay highly survivable, additionally Fu Xuan’s crit buffs are a nice asset for Topaz and Numby.

Bailu – Medium Synergy

Honkai Star Rail Bailu

Bailu is another extremely powerful 5* healer, and her high raw healing output means she can often sustain the party with minimal to no Skill Point usage, making her an excellent choice as a defensive support.

Lynx – High Synergy

Honkai Star Rail Lynx

Lynx is an excellent 4* healer that can help sustain Topaz and Numby’s teams. She is generally preferred over Natasha due to her greater survivability and party utility.

Follow Up Characters

Kafka – High Synergy

Honkai Star Rail Kafka Portrait

Kafka has very frequent follow-up attacks due to her talent giving Numby lots of extra actions. Kafka also has excellent AoE which pairs nicely with Topaz and Numby’s single target focused damage.

Clara – High Synergy

Honkai Star Rail Clara

Clara also has very frequent follow-up attacks and is very SP efficient making her highly synergistic with Topaz. Additionally, Clara’s excellent AoE pairs nicely with Topaz and Numby’s single target focused damage.

Himeko – High Synergy

Honkai Star Rail Himeko

Himeko is a strong follow-up attacker. There is excellent synergy between the two against fire weak enemies as they will break weakness rapidly, granting himeko more follow-ups which in turn grants Numby more attacks. However, Himeko has relatively infrequent follow-up attacks meaning she will grant fewer actions to Numby than Clara and Kafka

Sample Team Comps

Topaz and Numby Hyper

Topaz Hyper

Tingyun and Asta help maximize Topaz and Numby’s powerful damage output while Fu Xuan provides excellent teamwide sustain. Fu Xuan can be freely substituted for Luocha or any other healing based defensive support. This team has excellent single target but excels less in fights with many enemies.

Topaz and Numby Fire Weak

Topaz Fire

This team excels vs fire weak as Himeko, Asta and Topaz will quickly break weaknesses, granting Himeko extra follow up attacks which in turn grants Numby extra attacks. The combination of Himeko and Topaz covers both single target and AoE very nicely. Asta’s party wide fire damage buff also works very nicely in this team.

Topaz and Numby Double Follow-Up

Topaz Follow Up

Clara and Tingyun greatly amplify Topaz’s damage, and the combination of Clara and Topaz cover both AoE as well as single target very nicely.
Kafka or Jing Yuan can be subbed in for Clara and Asta can easily be subbed in for Ting Yun in this team comp as well.
