How to Play Mockingbird
Welcome back to our weekly review where we’ll be covering Marvel Snap’s latest card, Mockingbird, along with the best decks and synergies. I’ll be covering new deck ideas in this article, but to stay up to date, check out our Full Tier List to see any new meta changes.
Mockingbird is the second Spotlight Cache card to release in March, and she acts as a discount card similar to Evolved Abomination.
By fulfilling her condition, you can reduce her cost down to 0, making her a very efficient Power play.
Let’s get right into the guide.
Mockingbird Effect
Costs 1 less for each card you have in play that didn’t start in your deck.
Mockingbird Analysis
Firstly, Mockingbird is very similar to Evolved Abomination. They are both 5/9 and reduce their cost based on a condition. However, the general consensus seems to be that Mockingbird is much better than Evolved Abomination.
Firstly, Mockingbird’s condition is actually easier than Abomination in many archetypes. Secondly, Abomination requires you to play High Evo in your deck, a vanilla 4/4.
Because of this, Mockingbird seems like a pretty solid card. While she technically synergizes with many cards, some archetypes favor her more than others.
Cards that Synergize with Mockingbird
Thanos
At the start of the game, shuffle the six Infinity Stones into your deck.
It seems like we can’t go one month without a new card buffing up Thanos decks. The Infinity Stones count toward Mockingbird’s discount, making her extremely easy to play.
In the current meta, we see Thanos decks either play with Hope Summers for double 6-drop or for Professor X + Alioth. Mockingbird will likely be a card you play for 2-4 Energy, making her not as good in Hope Summers decks that want to double 6-drop on turn 5 and 6.
However, with Cull Obsidian and Mockingbird, Thanos decks now have even more ways of putting efficient Power on the board.
Card Generators
On Reveal: Add a random 4-Cost and 5-Cost card to your hand.
Other Examples: Agent 13, Cable, Helicarrier, Maria Hill, Mirage, Snowguard, Nick Fury, Sentinel
Decks like Loki and Devil Dinosuar often have a lot of card generators like Agent Coulson. These decks provide another way to discount Mockingbird, but not as easily as Thanos.
For these decks, card generation usually is put toward Devil Dinosaur’s Power or for Loki to replace. To make use of Mockingbird, you would need to randomly generate cards AND then play them onto the board.
This makes these decks not synergize as well as Thanos, but it’s still an option.
Board Generators
On Reveal: Add a 1-Power Squirrel to each other location.
Other Examples: Debrii, Shanna, Doctor Doom, Ultron, White Tiger, Brood, Mister Sinister
The other main group of cards that discount Mockingbird are cards that generate other “tokens.” Squirrel Girl adds two Squirrels on the board, Doctor Doom summons two robots, etc.
With these effects, you can easily discount Mockingbird to even 0-cost.
With these cards, you can likely look to play Midrange decks with Doom, Zoo with Squirrel Girl/Shanna, or even Patriot decks with Brood.
Other Potential Synergies
There are some other cards that can reduce Mockingbird’s cost, but these cards don’t particularly synergize deck wise. Even still, I’ll list them here in case some niche combination makes its way into the meta.
Other Examples: Bucky Barnes, Thor, Beta Ray Bill, Daken, Swarm, Black Knight
Mockingbird Decks
For this section, I’ll be going over some decks that synergize with Mockingbird.
Keep in mind that these decks are all first impressions, so things can definitely change rapidly. As new discoveries are made, I will be updating our Full Tier List, rather than update this article.
Be sure to check it out to see what the best decks are.
Mockingbird Thanos Deck
For this first deck, we have a fairly standard Thanos Alioth deck with the recently added Hope Summers. For this list, I opted to cut Magneto in favor of Mockingbird, but that may not be ideal.
It was honestly quite tough to decide what to cut, but Magneto made the most sense for me. You can argue to cut Wave, and Hope already gives you another form of ramp, so if you want to keep Magneto, that would be my next guess to cut.
Mockingbird Zoo Deck
Up next, we have a Zoo deck that uses Squirrel Girl and Shanna as the main ways to discount Mockingbird. Combined, they will reduce Mockingbird to 0-cost. Even playing Mockingbird for 2 or 3 Energy is very strong as well.
The other cards are simply other good Power cards like Dazzler, Ka-Zar, and Blue Marvel. The 1-cost cards are all 1/5 except for Squirrel Girl who represents 1/4.
Counters and Weaknesses
The main weakness of Mockingbird is Mobius M. Mobius. With Mobius on the field, Mockingbird becomes basically a vanilla 5/9 which is quite bad.
If you play her in a Zoo deck, Killmonger can also be a counter, but that’s specific to Zoo rather than Mockingbird.
Should You Buy Mockingbird?
Overall, I would rate Mockingbird a 8/10.
The main reason Mockingbird is rated well is because of her synergy with Thanos. Her Zoo synergy is quite good, but Zoo is somewhat of a niche deck.
There may be other combinations that I’m not thinking of, but the other combos don’t impress me too much.
Overall, if you enjoy Thanos decks, Mockingbird will be an easy inclusion. Will she make Thanos the best deck in the game by a wide margin? Maybe, maybe not.
Thanos is already considered one of the best decks now with the release of Hope Summers. Even if you skip out on Mockingbird, I don’t think you’ll be missing out on too much with plenty of other Thanos deck options to play.
If you’re worried about Thanos decks being nerfed, Mockingbird might be a skip unless you enjoy the Zoo archetype.
