Diablo 4 Headhunt Guide

In Diablo 4 Season 7, Headhunts are one of the new types of seasonal content that you will likely engage most with. Headhunts will show up on the map as zones which will periodically rotate, much like Helltides. Once you travel to the zone, you’ll be able to engage in the different mechanics of the zone and obtain Witchcraft powers and other rewards.

Headhunt Event – Mechanics

Mechanically, Headhunts are almost exactly like Helltides in how they function; it’s the mechanics within that differ slightly. Once a Headhunt appears, it’ll cover an area of the world map just like Helltides, but its outline will only be purple. Remember that these zones will periodically rotate so that they can be in any region in Sanctuary.

Headhunt Event Map Location

Headrotten

While inside the zone, you’ll mainly want to focus on finding and killing the new monster type known as the Headrotten because there are typically Whispers that require you to kill them and their thralls.

Whisper Seek

This will lead to you gathering Grim Favor, which will give you Caches from the Raven and Restless Rot, a new seasonal currency used to purchase and upgrade the new Witchcraft Powers.

While slaughtering Headrotten, you will also come across Rare and Elite variants, known as Headless Husks; these are very likely to drop Fugitive heads for Occultist Gems.

Raven of the Tree

Inside Headhunts, you can turn your Grim Favors into the Raven of the Tree, and he acts like a go-between to the Tree of Whispers, making it easier to deliver Grim Favors.

The Raven shouldn’t be too hard to find, as he’s typically somewhere in the centre of a Headhunt. If you are having trouble, zoom into your map slightly, and his Raven icon should appear.

Exposed Roots and Uprooted Cocoons

As Whispers are completed, you will begin to see Exposed Roots. You can interact with them to get a chance to spawn a rare variant of the Headrotten that will have some rewards and season currency.

Uprooted Cacoons are a special type of interactable similar to Exposed Roots and have a chance to spawn when clicking an Exposed Root. Uprooted cocoons will spawn Headless Husks and Fugitive Heads, which are the only way to obtain a Fugitive Head.

Exposed Roots

Keep in mind that while you spawn them while doing Whispers, other players can also spawn Uprooted Cocoons, which you can see on the map. It’s worth going to and fighting them whenever they appear.

Fugitive Heads

Fugitive Heads Character Splash

You’ll unlikely encounter any Fugitive Heads early on, as they are pretty rare. The opportunity for Fugitive Heads to spawn will increase with Torment level. You can also increase your chances with a Draught of Whispers, which doubles your chances of finding a Forgotten Altar or Lost Altar and increasing the chances of encountering a Fugitive Head by 50%. You should craft one of these if your goal is encountering a Fugitive Head.

Blitstering Roothold Whispering Wood

Killing a Fugitive Head will drop you a Fugitive Head item, which is turned in to Gelena, located near the Tree of Whispers. You’ll turn these in in exchange for Occult Gems.

Silent Chests

You’ll also come across Silent Chests within a Headhunt. These silent chests do not seem to be random and have static locations, and they are one of the methods of finding a Whispering Wood Sigil needed to gain access to a Roothold. Rootholds function similarly to Nightmare Dungeons.

Silent Chest

To open a Silent Chest, you’ll need to buy a Whispering key from the Purveyor of Curiosities found in almost any town.
