Overview

Holy Paladin is a very unique spec as its a DPS/Healer hybrid. Holy Shock, Holy Strike, and Judgement make it the strongest healer spec for Solo Questing and gives it a ton of damage in dungeons while still being able to heal and keep your party alive with Holy Light and Flash of Light. It's damage is heavily reliant on cooldowns, leading to a gameplay style of using all of your damage buttons, then healing while they are on cooldown. It's a very unique style of play that's very fun and rewarding.

As a pure healer Holy is by far the easiest in the game, basically relying entirely on just two heals, Holy Light and Flash of Light. If you're looking for an easy to play healer that can do tons of damage and easily clear content solo, then Holy might just be for you.

Gameplay and Main Abilities

Because of the way the Paladin talent trees are designed, Holy is basically forced to invest fairly heavily into damage and not as much into healing. This results in a playstyle where you use all your damage cooldowns, then focus on healing until they are back up.

For fast, cheap healing we use Flash of Light, and for big high throughput healing we use Holy Light. Basically always use a low rank of Flash of Light until you need a lot of healing, then use your highest rank of Holy Light. Be mindful of downranking on Flash of Light, as if you use too low level of a skill you'll get reduced healing! Just check the tooltip and make sure its not getting downscaled.

In terms of damage we want to always use Holy Strike and Judgement with Seal of Righteousness on cooldown. When there isn't healing to do, we want to be auto attacking to help damage enemies. When we have excess mana, we can use Holy Shock for more single target damage and Consecration for more AOE damage.

We also bring some very powerful tools to the party. Salvation reduces the threat generation of all of our non tank party members by 30%, which is very strong. We also get Blessings like Blessing of Might, Blessing of Kings, and Blessing of Wisdom. Finally we get auras, mainly Devotion Aura and Retribution Aura to buff our party even more.

Paladin also brings some amazing utility to the party. Blessing of Protection can save an over ambitious DPS player, Blessing of Sacrifice can allow us to save our tank, and Blessing of Freedom can break our teammates out of cc.

Paladin also has some incredibly powerful defense tools. Divine Protection breaks us out of all cc while making us immune to incoming damage. Divine Shield makes us immune to all damage while breaking us out of cc, and Blessing of Protection can break us out of some CC while also dropping enemy aggro.

Overall Holy is a high dps healer that brings a ton of utility and buffs for your party.

In the current Paladin Talent trees we're forced to go pretty heavily into damage. We're going to taking the best healing talents, but we will be leaning heavily into the damage playstyle, mostly because we have to.

Talent Order Breakdown

The talents are explained below in the order you should take them!

Holy Tree

5/5 Divine Intellect: Extra Intellect is great for both the increased mana pool but also for the increased spell crit chance. This gives us a bit of damage, but also synergizes nicely with Infusion of Light and with Illumination.

3/3 Improved Seals: Leaning into our high damage we take 3 points of Improved Seals to gain 15% damage on all of our Seals and Judgement. This will make both Solo Questing and dungeons easier.

3/3 Healing Light: Increased healing is amazing because it gives both increased mana efficiency and also increased healing throughput. This is a super powerful talent.

3/3 Reverence: This combined with Blessing of Wisdom gives us a constant stream of mana that really adds up over the course of a dungeon or a questing session. It also allows us to play with better tempo as we can use some mana for damage and immediately start regening it, allowing us to Holy Strike and Judgement without wasting too much mana.

2/2 Spiritual Focus: Spell Push Back can turn a bad situation into a party wipe, but with this talent we get a very high chance to avoid push back when taking damage. This gets even better when combined with Concentration Aura, giving us 100% chance to avoid spell pushback.

1/1 Divine Favor: Getting a guaranteed crit has very nice synergies with talents like Infusion of Light and Illumination while also offering increased healing throughput. In party play, try to use Divine Favor on Holy Light for a huge heal. In solo play though, you can use it on Holy Shock to nuke down enemies.

2/2 Infusion of Light: Even though our crit chance won't be super high when leveling, this talent still gets value because of the shear amount of Flash of Lights we cast. Flash of Light is by far our most mana efficient heal, so we will be spamming it constantly and will get the occasional crit which allows us to get our Holy Light out faster when we need a big heal.

1/1 Voice of Truth: Lots of mobs in dungeons have kicks and silences, and Voice of Truth saves you from accidentally wiping the party because you got silenced.

1/1 Holy Shock: This is a damage spell. Holy Shock should only be used to heal if you are desperate and the target will die if you don't use it. As a damage spell, its actually quite nice doing a decent amount of damage in an instant cast.

5/5 Illumination: This talent becomes insanely powerful as you get more crit chance as it will refund half the cost of your Heals every time they crit. We need to stack as much Intellect as possible to increase our crit chance, and talents like Holy Power really scale this effect even harder.

5/5 Holy Power: Getting 15% crit chance on our Holy Shock and Holy Strike gives us a decent damage boost, and getting 5% crit chance on the rest of our damaging and healing spells makes us even stronger. What really makes this talent shine though are its synergies with Infusion of Light and Illumination.

1/1 Light's Vigil: Its worth using as a heal when healing at least 4 targets with it and can be used to dump mana for damage in single target situations. Overall it's defiantly a bit on the weaker side, and you should be very mindful about wasting too much mana on it.

Retribution Tree

With most of the good healing nodes take from the Holy tree we now move out to the Retribution tree for more damage and mana efficiency. We'd take more healing if we could, but none exists were getting damage instead.

5/5 Benediction: This will reduce the cost of all of our instant cast spells by 10%. This includes everything from Purify to Consecration, so the value of this talent really adds up.

2/2 Holy Conduit: A 40% cheaper Consecration really allows us to start using it more and later make use of Consecrated Ground. This gives us the ability to deal a lot more damage in dungeons. Holy Conduit also reduces the cost of Exorcism, Holy Wrath, and Hammer of Wrath which is a nice bonus.

2/2 Improved Judgement: Reducing the cooldown on Judgement gives us more damage but also allows us to make better use of Seals like Seal of Wisdom and Seal of Light.

1/5 Conviction: We have nothing else to take so we're putting 1 point into Conviction for 1% melee crit chance.

3/3 Sanctified Judgement: This actually turns Judgement into a mana generator instead of spender, allowing us to more aggressively use our offensive spells!

2/2 Pursuit of Justice: 18% Movement is a nice utility buff. It allows us to move around the world faster but also position better in fights.

1/1 Sacred Arbiter: 20% increased damage on Holy Strike just adds a bit more burst damage to our rotation. The secondary effect of refreshing Judgement Effects doesn't really do anything for us.

Remaining Points

For our remaining points we're going back to the Holy tree and picking up a couple of damage talents.

1/3 Divine Precision: The amount of hit rating from this talent point is insane. We're only taking 1 points because even just with two points we're very often going to be over capped on hit chance.

2/2 Consecrated Ground: Because most of our damage is Holy, this is gives our Consecration a nice damage boost to all of our spells. Because we have Holy Conduit and Benediction, the cost of our Consecration at this point is quite low so we can use it more freely.

Suggested Races

For the Paladin there's one playable race on each faction. Both have some good stuff, but we're going to look at what the best Paladin race is.

Horde

Undead

Objectively the coolest Race/Class combo in World of Warcraft. Once a Human Paladin, these Paladins were killed and brought back to life and now use the Light to their will.

In terms of racials the Undead get Will of the Forsaken which has been nerfed to only removed Charms, Fears, and Sleeps instead of getting immunity to them. However, Cannibalize now also restores mana. This makes Cannibalize surprisingly powerful as anytime you're fighting hominoids you can quickly reset between pulls or sometimes even reset mid pull, allowing you to get a bunch of your mana back. Undead also got a new passive Touch of the Grave, which gives you a chance on hit to deal bonus damage and heal. This is okay for Holy but not crazy strong.

Alliance

Human

The classic Paladin Race are humans, and they have some pretty useful tools. They have Will to Survive, which gives the ability to remove stuns. This is incredibly powerful in PvP, and their addition of Perception means they are also hard for Rogue and Druid to sneak up on.

Human's passive The Human Spirit also gives a bit of mana regen which is nice in general for Holy, especially when paired with Reverence which allows some of your spirit to keep regening while casting.

The Human's real power though comes from Ruthless, which now gives 2% ability and spell critical hit chance all the time. This is insanely powerful for Holy as your crits will proc Illumination and Infusion of Light. This is by far the strongest racial for Holy

Dwarf

Dwarf Paladin's are S-Tier visually but unfortunately the Dwarf racials are not super powerful. Earth Fury giving 2% increased crit damage and healing is okay but not amazing. The only other real tool they bring is Stoneform, which is not very impressive for a Holy Paladin.

As cool as Dwarves are, if you're looking to min max you should really only play Dwarf if you're looking to tank.

Strongest Paladin Race

Early game Undead will be very nice with the ability to quickly reset through Cannibalize. However once you unlock Illumination, Human's with Ruthless will become quite a bit better than Undead. Human's get more mana regen, more mana recover thanks to Illumination, and more healing per spell cast thanks to the crit from Illumination. Humans are significantly better than Undead or Dwarves for mid/end game healing.

Check out our racials tier list to find out more!

Rotation

Healing Priority

The spells below are ordered in terms of mana efficiency. So Flash of Light should be cast as much as possible, and then go down the list as you need more and more healing per second but for worst mana efficiency.

When healing as Holy you're pretty much just going to be spamming Flash of Light until you need a big heal, in which case you will use Holy Light. Then if your whole party is getting low, you can use Light's Vigil to top them up.

1. Flash of Light: This is your most mana efficient heal, and you should generally look to use the lowest rank you can as the mana efficiency gets worse with levels. Just make sure not to use too low of a rank of Flash of Light, because if you're 18 levels higher than when you learned the spell it'll start to incur a penalty.

2. Holy Light: This is your big, throughput heal. Its less mana efficient than Flash of Light, but heals significantly more. Use Holy Light when you need a big heal to catch up.

3. Light's Vigil: If at least 4 part members are missing a good chunk of health, Light's Vigil can be used with Holy Shock to quickly and fairly efficiently heal up your party. Be very careful to only use this spell when you can get a lot of value because its very expensive and can easily run you out of mana.

4. Holy Shock: ONLY USE IF SOMEONE IS GOING TO DIE. This spell is horribly mana inefficient and doesn't even offer good throughput. The only use case for using Holy Shock as a heal is to save someone from certain death if you don't press it. Otherwise, always use it as a damage spell.

DPS Rotation

1. Seal of Righteousness + Blessing of Wisdom/Blessing of Might: Always keep up Seal of Righteousness and then use Blessing of Wisdom when in party play and Blessing of Might when playing solo.

2. Consecration: Against multiple enemies Consecration is a great spell, especially once you unlock Consecrated Ground. However its important to keep in mind that this spell is very expensive until you unlock Holy Conduit, so don't waste all your mana if you're supposed to be healing!

3. Judgement: Deals a crazy amount of damage for the mana cost, making it a great spell to help dps down enemies. Use on cooldown.

4. Exorcism/Holy Wrath: Against Demons and Undead these spells offer crazy damage, and they become very mana effecient with Holy Conduit.

5. Holy Strike: Low damage but very cheap. Use on cooldown.

6. Holy Shock: Deals a ton of damage but is pretty expensive. Only use if you have the mana to spare! Also remember you can use Divine Favor to get even more damage from your Holy Shock.

Tips and Tricks

Always keep a weapon swap for when you have to play solo! This should generally be a Two-Handed weapon with as high of dps as possible. You have the option of using a Magic Damage weapon, but generally a high dps weapon will be better.

Keep in mind the 5 Second Rule! Your mana will only start regening after not spending any mana for 5 seconds, so its generally better to cast multiple spells back to back and then let your mana trickle back in.

Remember you have a ton of amazing utility spells like Blessing of Freedom, Blessing of Sacrifice, Blessing of Protection, Purify, Hammer of Justice, and many more. Make sure you are using these skills to support yourself and your party!

Stat Priority

Intellect > Spirit > Stamina > Strength > Agility

Intellect: Very powerful as it gives you crit chance for Illumination and Infusion of Light. Crit is insanely good so Intellect is insanely good!

Spirit: Spirit will give you mana regen after not casting for 5 seconds but with Reverence you'll get 30% of the value even when casting. This makes Spirit a pretty good stat.

Stamina: Not dying is good so Stamina is good! If you're playing more solo and want more damage you can safely prioritize Strength over Stamina.

Strength: Since we auto attack a decent amount Strength is okay, its good if you're playing solo a lot.

Agility: Mostly useless. A bit of Defense and Melee Crit Chance which we don't get a lot of value from.

Group Play & Dungeons

Remember to buff your allies with the proper Blessings. Blessing of Wisdom is great for casters. Blessing of Kings & Blessing of Might are great options for everyone else.

Keep an eye on people who pull threat or are in danger, use your Blessing of Protection to save an ally that's in trouble. (check out the focus target macro for this in the macro section below)

Use your Flash of Light as your main healing tool as its very mana efficient!

Macros

Cancel Divine Shield

This macro will cancel your Divine shield if you push the button a 2nd time. Keep in mind this can be a bit risky, if you accidently double click the button you might be toast.

#showtooltip Divine Shield
/cast Divine Shield
/cancelaura Divine Shield

Focus Target Blessing of Protection

Keeping your healer as your focus target is always smart when running dungeons. This macro will automatically target them (your focus target) if you ever need to quickly cast Blessing of Protection on them so they don't get sliced to death by an incoming enemy.

#showtooltip Blessing of Protection
/cast [@focus] Blessing of Protection

Which Aura To Use?

Retribution Aura is great if you are just blasting through enemies and want to clear even faster. However in terms of raw power, often times Devotion Aura can actually be stronger. When playing solo or groups I usually just use Retribution Aura for faster clearing, and will swap to Devotion Aura if things get dicey.
