Affliction doesn't have a rigid rotation that you repeat against every enemy.
Your goal is to apply the right DoTs for the expected lifetime of the target, manage incoming damage with your Demon, and finish enemies without wasting Mana or clipping unnecessary DoT ticks.
Ideally, we're fighting two enemies at once for most of the leveling journey.
One target is being controlled by your Demon while you handle the other. Against particularly safe pulls, you can add a third enemy and use
Fear to keep it under control.
Levels 1 to 4
Your first priority is to get
Immolate trained immediately.
Kill your first mob, vendor whatever you can, and get the Copper needed to train it. Also complete your
Summon Imp quest as soon as possible.
Rank 1
Shadow Bolt has terrible Mana efficiency, so we want to get as much value from
Immolate as possible.
Rotation:
Shadow Bolt
Immolate
Shadow Bolt- Melee to finish if needed
An important optimization is to begin your
Immolate cast while the initial
Shadow Bolt projectile is still traveling toward the mob.
This lets both spells connect close together and gives you faster kill times.
At Level 4, train
Corruption and your Imp's
Blood Pact.
Levels 4 to 10
Once you have access to
Corruption and a wand, your gameplay starts becoming MUCH smoother.
Levels 4 to 6 rotation:
Corruption
Immolate- Wand until dead
You should prioritize obtaining a
Lesser Magic Wand as soon as possible.
At Level 8, you unlock
Bane of Agony and
Fear.
With a strong early wand, your rotation against normal enemies can become extremely simple:
Bane of Agony- Wand until dead
You can still add
Corruption or
Immolate against tougher enemies, but don't waste Mana applying multiple DoTs to mobs that are going to die almost immediately.
Start practicing wand kiting as well. Fire your wand, reposition between shots, and learn the rhythm of attacking while moving.
At Level 10, complete your
Summon Voidwalker quest.
Levels 10 to 22
This is where we're going to begin consistently killing two targets at the same time.
Your
Summon Voidwalker can tank one enemy while you attack another, giving you much better overall damage throughput than repeatedly fighting one target.
Rotation:
Bane of Agony
Corruption
Immolate- Wand to finish
Drain Life if you need Health
You should have 5/5
Improved Corruption by Level 14, making
Corruption instant cast.
Another important breakpoint is Level 13, when you can equip
Greater Magic Wand.
At Level 18, train Rank 2
Bane of Agony.
Try to obtain
Gravestone Scepter from Blackfathom Deeps as soon as you can reasonably complete the associated quest.
This wand is a MASSIVE power spike and will dramatically improve your leveling efficiency.
As you're killing mobs, start building the habit of maintaining one enemy as your main target and another as your focus target.
Apply your DoTs to both enemies, allow your pet to establish some initial threat, and use your wand to finish targets that need additional damage.
The goal is to make both enemies die around the same time without wasting DoT duration or unnecessarily exposing yourself to damage.
Levels 22 to 30: Drain Tanking
This is our first major playstyle transition.
After respeccing into
Improved Drains and
Fel Concentration, we're going to start using
Drain Life much more aggressively.
I particularly like using the
Summon Succubus or
Summon Incubus during this level range because of its strong melee damage.
Rotation:
Bane of Agony
Corruption
Immolate if needed- Wand while your Demon builds damage
Drain Life when the enemy reaches you or you need healing
The important thing here is understanding that your Demon doesn't need to tank the entire fight.
Let it get some initial attacks in, apply your DoTs, and allow the mob to come toward you.
Once the enemy reaches melee range, channel
Drain Life and recover Health while your Demon continues dealing damage.
You're effectively using your own Health pool as another resource to sustain your killing speed.
If you don't need healing and your wand does more damage, keep wanding.
Don't force
Drain Life simply because you invested points into drain talents.
Levels 30 to 40: Siphon Life and Multi-Dotting
At Level 30, you unlock
Siphon Life.
This gives us another DoT and significantly improves our ability to sustain through multiple enemies.
Rotation against tougher mobs:
Bane of Agony
Corruption
Siphon Life
Immolate if the enemy will survive long enough
Drain Life or wand to finish
Your primary goal should still be killing two enemies simultaneously.
Let your Demon tank one target while you face tank or kite the other.
You can comfortably play with either
Summon Succubus or
Summon Voidwalker here depending on the situation.
The
Summon Succubus is great when you want additional damage and faster quest completion.
The
Summon Voidwalker is better when you're consistently pulling multiple enemies and need stronger threat management or an emergency shield.
One important thing to understand is that
Siphon Life has a long duration and relatively low damage per tick.
It becomes much more valuable against enemies that live long enough for multiple ticks to occur. If a mob is going to die in a few seconds, don't feel obligated to apply every DoT.
Levels 40 to 58: Wrack Comes Online
At Level 40, we finally unlock
Wrack.
This changes our offensive filler priority considerably.
Wrack is a six second channel that deals Shadow damage every second while also increasing the damage enemies take from your other Shadow DoTs by 10%.
It also benefits from your Affliction drain talents, making it an extremely interesting addition to the leveling rotation.
Full rotation against durable enemies:
Bane of Agony
Corruption
Siphon Life
Immolate if worthwhile
Wrack
The biggest thing to keep in mind is that
Wrack isn't something you should blindly channel against every mob.
If the enemy is going to die from your existing DoTs, just move to the next target.
If you need Health,
Drain Life may be the better option.
If the enemy has enough Health remaining and your DoTs have plenty of uptime left,
Wrack becomes an excellent way to deal additional damage.
You also have
Nightfall procs to consider, giving you opportunities to weave in instant
Shadow Bolt casts.
This is where
Affliction starts becoming incredibly dynamic. You'll constantly be assessing mob Health, DoT timers, incoming damage, and whether the next global cooldown should be spent on damage, healing, movement, or another target.
Levels 58 to 60
Continue playing around your full
Affliction rotation, focusing on efficient multi-target kills.
At this point, the biggest improvement to your leveling speed isn't necessarily another damage talent. It's improving your execution.
Keep your DoTs rolling, avoid wasted casts, manage your Demon's positioning, and move toward your next objective while your current enemies are dying.
If you take
Shadowburn, start incorporating it as an instant finisher, particularly against players or enemies that need to die quickly.
Pet Selection
One of the biggest mistakes Warlocks make is assuming there's one Demon they should use for every situation.
Each pet has a specific purpose, and knowing when to switch is an important part of playing the class properly.
Voidwalker
My default recommendation for controlled multi-target leveling.
The
Summon Voidwalker is particularly strong when you're consistently killing two or three enemies at once.
Its threat generation allows you to spread DoTs comfortably, and
Consume Shadows provides a way to recover its Health between pulls.
You also have
Sacrifice as an emergency defensive cooldown.
This is extremely useful because it allows you to play more aggressively. You can push your Health and Mana lower than you otherwise would, knowing you have a substantial absorb shield available if things go wrong.
The
Summon Voidwalker is also useful in world PvP against physical damage dealers.
Succubus / Incubus
My preferred choice when prioritizing damage and single target questing efficiency.
These Demons deal strong melee damage and work particularly well with drain tanking.
I especially like using one around Level 22 when we first obtain Rank 2
Drain Life and complete our drain talent package.
Let your Demon deal damage while you maintain your DoTs and use
Drain Life to sustain yourself.
You won't have the same emergency protection as a
Summon Voidwalker, but you can often kill normal enemies faster.
Seduction also provides useful crowd control in PvP and certain dungeon situations.
Felhunter
My preferred Demon when world PvP becomes a serious concern.
The
Summon Felhunter brings two incredibly powerful tools:
Devour Magic for offensive and defensive dispels.
Spell Lock for interrupting and shutting down enemy casters.
Against many spellcasting classes, these abilities are considerably more valuable than the additional protection provided by your
Summon Voidwalker.
I strongly recommend learning proper
Devour Magic targeting macros so you can instantly dispel yourself or your current target without wasting time changing targets.
Imp
Your starting Demon and a useful situational option later.
Blood Pact provides additional Health for your group,
Fire Shield can provide extra damage against enemies attacking its target, and
Firebolt allows your Demon to deal ranged damage.
That makes the
Summon Imp useful in situations where melee pets have trouble maintaining uptime or where your group specifically benefits from its utility.
Wand Progression
Wands are EXTREMELY important for Warlock leveling, particularly during the early levels.
A strong wand allows you to continue dealing damage without spending Mana, which means fewer
Life Tap casts and less downtime.
Forever also introduces additional crafted wands through
Enchanting, giving you more upgrade options throughout the leveling process.
