This guide shows you the recommended talents for your journey to level 30 in the WoW: Forever Beta. For the Priest, the Shadow Specialization is an extremely powerful and efficient leveling build that's great for solo, duo, and even group leveling. The Priest's damage-over-time spells, coupled with the iconic Mind Blast and Mind Flay, will make easy work of most enemies you face in the open world while questing. The protection that Power Word: Shield provides, combined with Psychic Scream, also ensures that even if an enemy does eventually close the distance, the damage taken and spell pushback will be minimal.
Priest, like a lot of other classes, will start off a little slow. To begin with, you'll be using Smite and Shadow Word: Pain until Mind Blast becomes learnable at level 5, and Mind Flay as early as level 21, depending on how you choose to spend your talent points.
Shadow will be our recommended specialization for the smoothest and most efficient leveling journey.
Talents
Your first talent points depend on how easily you can obtain a wand by level 10. For this build, we’ll assume one is rewarded through the early quests. If not, hold off on the first 2 Discipline points and move straight into the Shadow tree.
Assuming we have a wand, spend the first 2 points on 2/2 Wand Specialization for a huge boost to free damage.
From there, begin filling the Shadow tree with 5/5 Spirit Tap. This provides much-needed sustain after each kill, as Priest abilities are very mana intensive. It also synergises perfectly with Wand Specialization and our use of the MP5 rule. After 5 seconds without spell casting, mana begins to regenerate. By finishing weakened mobs with your wand, you can take advantage of both MP5 regeneration and the increased Spirit fromSpirit Tap when the mob dies.
Sustainability is key: less time drinking means less downtime and more gold saved in the long run.
After that, we’ll take 2/2Improved Shadow Word: Pain, increasing the duration of our Shadow Word: Pain by 6 seconds. Then 3/5 into Shadow Focus to improve our chance of landing Shadow spells against targets around our level.
Next, we’ll take 2/2 Shadow Reach, increasing the range of our offensive Shadow spells by 20%. This takes the maximum range of our shadow spells from 30 to 36 yards, giving us some extra space to keep mobs at a comfortable distance.
We’ll then take Mind Flay, followed by 2/2 Improved Mind Flay. Mind Flay deals channeled shadow damage over 3 seconds while also slowing the target’s movement speed. This a huge power spike for Priests.Improved Mind Flay increases its damage and range, although the slow is reduced slightly
Our next talent point goes intoVampiric Embrace, providing passive healing for the Priest and their party whenever we deal Shadow spell damage.
Finally, we’ll put our remaining points into 3/3 Shadow Weaving, giving our Shadow spells a chance to increase our Shadow damage as the effect stacks on the target.
This build focuses on strong wand damage, mana sustainability, reliable spell hits, and early Shadow damage. WithSpirit Tap, Wand Specialization and Mind Flay working together, it provides a smooth and efficient levelling experience with minimal downtime.
Playable Races
Every race has its own strengths, especially Priests as each race has 2 exclusive Priest racial spells in WoW: Forever - Similar to Classic WoW. There are definitely no bad choices when it comes to picking a race so feel free to choose whichever race you feel is the best match for you. If we had to make any recommendations for each faction, our Alliance Recommendations would be Human for PvP focused players and Gnome for players who prefer to excel in PvE. As for the Horde, Undead would be the PvP choice and Troll for PvE.
Alliance
Human, Dwarf, Night Elf & Gnome (New race to Priest)
Humans new Racial ability Will to Survive brought into WoW: Forever from retail versions of World of Warcraft, breaks all stun effects and their classic Perception racial will give you the edge against stealthed opponents. The undeniable choice for PvP.
Gnomes new racial ability Eureka! Will certainly be an enormous boost for priests of any spec in PvE as when activate reduces the mana cost of the next 3 spell casts and increases damage and/or healing by 10%. Perfect for a bit of extra power while also being efficient!
Horde
Troll & Undead
Undead still benefit from their racial ability Will of the Forsaken, but now only removes Fear, Sleep and Charm effects, rather than granting brief immunity. They also have Touch of the Grave, a new racial for Undead which gives offensive attacks and spells a 5% to drain health from their target (maximum of 5% health). The choice for Horde seems clear.
Trolls have a reworked Berserking, which provides a burst of increased casting and attack speed, now at a flat 10%, making it useful for Priests looking to maximise burst damage or healing during PvE encounters. They also have a 5% increase in damage to beasts with Beast Slaying and better health regeneration during combat with Regeneration. For us, Troll looks to be the choice most PvE focused players will side with.
Main Skills and Rotation
The primary skills you'll use in almost every fight are Mind Blast, Shadow Word: Pain, and Mind Flay, while also keeping up Power Word: Shield to protect yourself from damage and spell pushback, and Psychic Scream to keep enemies at a safe distance.
Apply Power Word: Shield before engaging in combat. It lasts 30 seconds.
Open on the target by casting Mind Blast to front-load damage quickly.
Follow up your Mind Blastby instantly casting Shadow Word: Pain, and keep it up for as long as you need it.
Mind Flay the target as it closes the distance.
As the target gets within melee range, you can choose to either absorb the damage with your Power Word: Shield or fear the mob away withPsychic Scream.
Once the target has around 20% HP remaining, you can finish them off with your wand.
Mind Blast has a baseline 8 second cooldown, and we advise using it whenever it's available, as it's a Priest's fastest cast and most burst heavy damage spell. Just make sure not to overkill your target, and always try to finish with your wand. Sustain is a massive part of leveling a Priest.
Things to Remember
Always make sure to visit your Class Trainer every 2 levels (2, 4, 6, 8, 10, etc.) so you don't miss out on powerful upgrades as you level.
Try to follow the "MP5 rule" when possible, you can fight multiple targets at once, but it will impact your mana sustain.
Stats to Prioritize
Intellect forincreased mana pool.
Spirit for health and mana regeneration,
Stamina for extra health.
Don’t forget Spell Power for increased damage and healing
Tips & Tricks
Always be on the lookout for wand upgrades, especially at early levels as a Priest, a good wand is your best friend.
Timing is everything with your core spells, so think carefully about:
When it's best to recast Mind Blast
Whether it's worth reapplying Shadow Word: Pain
When it's best to reapply Power Word: Shield during combat
Things to consider when making these decisions:
Will casting this spell interfere with your mana regen toward the end of the fight? For example, if the mob is already low on HP, is recasting a damage spell worth it, or is it just overkill?
Is it more efficient to let your shield fall off and use Psychic Scream to peel the enemy away instead, since it costs far less mana?
Remember, Priest spells are mana-intensive, so picking the right moment to use them matters. With practice and experience, you'll find the right balance.
