Overview

The Slow Burn archetype comes in many forms, but ultimately aims to scorch the enemy while they're continuously halted to a stop. It's an aggressive combo-like setup that uses speed control over sustain.

Its power truly unlocks once the combo pieces start coming together, meaning it won't always be readily available from the start. However, with a bit of effort, you can Stash components until it comes online.

Example Early Game Path

While it's indeed possible to start off the run with a Burn setup, you may be better positioned to take the Weapons route early on, then pivot during the mid game.

The main leading indicators for an early Burn start involve finding skills like Immolating Spark or Final Flame. Fiery can work too, but is best when you have at least a few items that can benefit from it.

Additionally, if you happen to acquire Cinders or Salamander Pup, you can create a very potent single-item threat that will carry you during the first few days. As a rule of thumb, you'll probably want at least 6-8 Burn on a single item, otherwise opt for a different game plan.

Core Synergies

  • Volcanic Vents, Lighter, and Pop Snappers are the early game Burn items of choice, either for their speed or Multicast.
    • Powder Horn is a useful enabler to allow Pop Snappers to function as your primary Burn item.
  • Zoarcid is a fantastic source of Haste. Even at Bronze it can support you all the way through till the late game.
  • Oni Mask is weak on its own, but can become a build-defining threat with enough support. Pick this up when you can, it'll be of great use later on.
  • Korxena Crest + Integrated HUD follow alongside the Oni Mask game plan, while also functioning as solid Crit Chance filler in the meantime.
  • Clamera is mostly filler early on, but can become a pivotal startup engine during the mid to late game, so it's worth grabbing.
  • Mantis Shrimp is very slow and won't have much support in the beginning, but can be serviceable alongside Slow items like IllusoRay.
  • Life Preserver can decide outcomes of early PvP fights, as long as you have board space to spare. Works great alongside a single-threat Burn item.

Tips & Tricks

  • Aside from an early Bronze to Silver Volcanic Vents, prioritize upgrading future combo pieces like Oni Mask and Korxena Crest.
  • Star Chart is always worth buying early on to unlock XP via The Docks event.
  • It's worth grabbing at least one Economy item when available. For this build, Shovel > Fishing Rod > Fishing Net.

Example Mid Game Additions

There are two primary pathways you can take when investing in the Slow Burn archetype; Oni Mask and Lighthouse / Darkwater Anglerfish. While both builds include many of the same components, the former plays more for Burn triggers while the latter maximizes its Slows.

Core Synergies

  • Oni Mask offers absurd Burn scaling, even with a modest amount of Crit. With fast enough triggers, even around ~20% is a solid starting point.
    • Tracer Fire is the best skill for these builds, and can singlehandedly solve your Crit without need for further investment.
    • Note that while Oni Mask does Charge on Slow, it's main task is to scale your faster Burn items. Dedicated Slow is not a necessity.
  • Darkwater Anglerfish can stack a lot of Burn really fast, particularly once it's upgraded to at least Gold-tier.
    • Dock Lines and Shot Glasses are key pieces for providing enough Slow triggers.
  • Incendiary Rounds is by far the best Burn item to scale via Oni Mask, since you can easily spam triggers with Multicast items like Dive Weights.
    • It's also great at Charging Zoarcid, or spamming Slows if you happen to apply a Heavy enchantment to it.
  • Weather Glass is incredibly strong in the early to mid game. It can become your main source of Burn, while also pairing well with Incendiary Rounds.
    • Still viable later on once upgraded to have a lower Cooldown, or if taking advantage of its crazy interaction with Toxic Flame.
    • Note: You don't need to maximize its Multicast. 3-4x is sufficient enough, and enchantments can occasionally help it cap out at 5x.
  • Nesting Doll provides a faster startup alternative to Pop Snappers, helping to quickly Charge Zoarcid via Heated Shells or Incendiary Rounds.

Tips & Tricks

  • While you can mix and match items between both setups, you'll likely want to build towards playing one over the other.
  • Silver+ skills can lead to a huge power spike during the mid game, so be sure to reroll aggressively to increase your odds at something desirable.
  • Wanted Poster is a great pickup for more XP, provided you have space in your Stash.
  • If you missed out on Star Chart and it's still early on, you can grab Astrolabe for the same reasons.

End Game Build Breakdown

Core Synergies

  • Tripwire is a fantastic addition to both Oni Mask and Lighthouse setups for its enemy-use Slow effect.
    • Improvised Bludgeon and/or Makeshift Barricade make it even better, especially if you aren't able to upgrade it to Diamond.
  • Holsters is great startup piece if you can afford the slot. It's generally best alongside Heated Shells + Nesting Doll / Pop Snappers.
  • Clamera adds another valuable startup option, but truly shines in combination with skills (ex. "when you use an item").
  • Shipwreck has incredible utility alongside Lighthouse, Darkwater Anglerfish, and Clamera (among others). It's well worth the space it occupies.

Tips & Tricks

  • For Oni Mask setups, prioritize getting a Fiery enchant on passive items like Korxena Crest or Tripwire. This adds a massive boost to your offense.
  • Heavy enchants are best for Lighthouse builds, allowing you to create an abundance of triggers via Incendiary Rounds or Dive Weights.
  • Speed is everything in the late game. Make sure your startup time is as fast as possible, or else you'll need a defensive enchant to sustain yourself.

Situational Variants

  • Seadog's Saloon can be strong under the right circumstances, and is often utilized alongside Mantis Shrimp setups. However, its ceiling is much lower.
