Kripp's Potion Mak Build

Overview

Mak's Potion archetype is all about Transforming Reagents to create powerful enchantment combos. Its RNG nature can create a huge range of setups, meaning your endgame boards will often be different.

Proper pathing and stash management are often key to maximizing your experience, but as long as you learn what to look for, it's not too difficult to put the pieces together.

Example Early Game Path

Core Synergies

  • Refractor is very reliable threat during the early game since it scales fast via several types of effects.
    • Rainbow Potion pairs well, providing four simultaneous triggers that ramp it up quickly.
    • Mortar & Pestle grants you incredible sustain alongside Refractor's fast scaling.
  • Crocodile Tears can function as a huge game-ending grenade, particularly alongside Burn/Poison.
    • Ideally this isn't your only win condition due to its speed and Ammo, although it can sometimes carry you during the first few days.
  • Aludel is a serviceable option on-board if you have any Poison skills (Emerald helps too), and assuming you can enable its 3x Multicast.
  • Flying Potion and Sleeping Potion are solid utility pickups, but will generally become more useful once more pieces are assembled.

Tips & Tricks

  • Potion Distillery is the top priority item for this build, allowing you to continuously "reroll" your enchantments.
    • You can use a Catalyst to Transform a Large Bronze item from Curio. This provides a 1/5 chance to roll a Potion Distillery.
  • Leverage scaleable Medium items as your main win condition during the early game. While Refractor is ideal due to its flexibility, you can definitely manage with a variety of options, so long as you have a few Small items that support it (ex. Nightshade, Leeches, Magic Carpet).
  • It's worth picking up most Small Reagents you can afford, as these can be rerolled into some powerful Potions later on.
    • Prioritize utility enchants like Heavy/Turbo, while generally avoiding Deadly/Obsidian.
  • Aludel and Mortar & Pestle are the common Catalyst spawners available from Day 1.
  • Peacewrought is Mak's staple Economy item. Upgrade to Silver ASAP to greatly improve your income (often worth using your guaranteed level 4 upgrade).
    • When you don't have any items worth destroying, it's worth purchasing cheap fodder items for profit (assuming you have the space).
    • You can also eat any spare Catalysts that you don't need.

Common Filler Items

  • Emerald
  • Fire Potion
  • Incense
  • Noxious Potion
  • Philosopher's Stone
  • Quill and Ink (with no Weapons)
  • Ruby
  • Tazidian Dagger
  • Thurible
  • Venomander

Example Mid Game Additions

The viability of each Potion varies greatly depending on its tier and enchantments. Pretty much any Potion can be used under the right circumstances, so even those not mentioned here can still be worth including.

At the end of the day, unless you're purely going for speed (ex. Recycling Bin + Vial Launcher), it's going to come down to whatever you roll throughout your several Transforms. Don't worry, with enough time, you're likely to roll something spicy!

Core Synergies

  • Recycling Bin is incredibly strong as it provides fantastic Cooldown Reduction while solving Ammo. It's a lead indicator for a Potion build, worthy of a pivot.
    • It's almost always worth picking up in case you find Vial Launcher later on, since filling up with Potions is flexible and easy.
    • Runic Potion is the third piece of the combo which grants Lifesteal to Vial Launcher.
  • Boiling Flask is another excellent choice for its Multicast support. While it does Reload, having 1-2 extra Ammo is useful due to its long Cooldown.
  • Potion Distillery can be a great source of Ammo and Cooldown Reduction. While it's a staple in the stash, it's definitely worth considering for the board.
  • Show Globe is a good early to mid game win condition before better alternatives are found. With a board full of Potions, the Burn/Regen scales pretty well.
  • Energy Potion provides excellent board-wide Haste support, particularly after upgrades, or with a Turbo enchant.
  • Frost Potion, Strength Potion, and Invulnerability Potion all provide situational but useful utility (Frost Potion at Gold+ for extra targets).

Tips & Tricks

  • Ammo is a very relevant aspect of Potion builds. Acquiring Stocked and/or Gunner can greatly impact what's required on board.
    • With enough additional board-wide Ammo, you can often get away with little to no Reload support.
  • Most of the key win conditions exist at Gold. Ideally you'll find one early, but if not, you can keep Transforming Gold Reagents/Potions to look for options.
    • Obsidian/Fiery/Toxic Vitality Potion is ridiculously strong.
  • Alembic, Cellar, and Sifting Pan are additional Catalyst spawners if you need them.

End Game Build Breakdown

Core Synergies

  • Recycling Bin + Vial Launcher is a quintessential combo due to how easy it can be assembled. Prioritize low Cooldown Potions for a quicker startup.
    • Energy Potion is incredibly useful here as the Haste still takes effect even after the items are Transformed.
    • Avoid Obsidian/Weapon Potions in order to guarantee (barring disruption) Runic Potion applies Lifesteal to Vial Launcher.
  • Boiling Flask can enable two very different Potion combos, each with their own unique requirements.
    • Bottled Explosion: This multiplies fast, provided you at least have some ways to boost its base Damage.
    • Vat of Acid: Requires a bit of time to stack its tags, but very splashy once it's ready to go off.
    • Note: You can use Boiling Flask in pretty much any Potion build. The main place it doesn't fit is alongside Recycling Bin + Vial Launcher.
  • Shrinking Potion and Vitality Potion (with an offensive enchantment) are excellent generic win conditions when not running a specific combo setup.

Tips & Tricks

  • Distilled Sunlight is an instant-buy, granting access to a rerollable Shiny Potion. Since you're always Transforming it, you may even find another!
  • Frozen Horror is also worth picking up if you can afford it. Mak has a number of Medium items that are absolutely busted with an Icy enchantment.

Situational Variants

  • Athanor works well alongside Eternal Torch to create huge amounts of Burn.
    • A wide Potion setup with Boiling Flask can also be strong, but you'll likely need to find Athanor early enough to pursue this route.
  • Atmospheric Sampler enables ridiculous combos with the right setup, so it's always worth considering to potentially break your board in half.
  • Gravstone won't be worth using on its own, but it does have insane enchantment potential. An incredible Frozen Horror hit.
