Kripp's Nightshade Mak Build

Overview

Mak specializes in damage-over-time effects like Burn and Poison. However at the same time, he also happens to have the lowest base Health among all Heroes.

This makes him rather squishy in the early game, which can be particularly challenging when relying on a slow ticking clock. Mak's Burn/Posion scaling is great, but it still takes time he often doesn't have.

Enter, Knee Brace.

Many of Mak's archetypes tend to focus on a few particular item combos. This actually leaves extra board space to work with, making it more feasible to include Knee Brace.

By including it on the board during every PvP encounter, it doesn't take long until you actually start to out-scale the Health of other Heroes. Check out Kripp's run to see the game plan in action!

An Alternative Angle

The Curio is where you're most likely to find a Knee Brace, and the sooner you find it, the better. Additionally, try to upgrade it as early as possible to improve your Max Health gain per fight. You should be able to find a B1&B2 upgrade easily enough, but if not, save your guaranteed level four upgrade for it.

Prioritizing the Knee Brace brought Mak up to five digits of Health, which is generally very uncommon. On top of upgrading it, if you utilize your level 10 enchant to select "The Artist", you're guaranteed to get a Shiny Knee Brace, doubling its Health-stacking value.

Since Transform is now a mechanic in the game, you don't actually have to worry about completely "wasting" your enchantment. Once you feel that you've stacked enough, you can utilize Alembic or Potion Distillery to convert it into a Shiny Potion (or Mandala for a random Small item).Just cross your fingers that you don't hit Bottled Tornado or you'll lose the enchantment.

Nightshade

Nightshade offers a very respectable rate of scaling with enough Heal and/or Regeneration effects. In Mak's case this will primarily be Regen (or Lifesteal), as Mak doesn't really have much Healing outside of Transforming Myrrh.

By finding ways to stack enough individual triggers, the Poison can reach pretty crazy heights, enough to where it becomes the build's primary damage source. Then it just comes down to how well you can stall out the opponent until the Poison ticks down to their demise.

Kripp had a Shielded Nightshade which added a whole other layer of defense to the build. Shield as a mechanic is pretty much nonexistent to Mak, so having an exceptionally high Shield-stacker was a great benefit for ensuring survival.

Library

Library is a phenomenal supporting Property that both decreases your Cooldowns while increasing those of all Weapons. It's best use case is to counter opposing Weapon builds, which is great for buying time to stack up Nightshade's Poison.

The Cooldown reduction really can't be understated either, as having a flat two second decrease across the board is massive. This really helps the Small supporting pieces move faster, while ultimately letting Nightshade put on the pressure much sooner.

A Shielded Library provides a great way to go over-the-top of Mak's low base Health, while a Restorative Library adds even more Nightshade triggers. Both are great options when presented.

Quill and Ink

Quill and Ink is a solid early game item but often finds little use later on. Its seven second Cooldown is a bit too long for its effect, and it does only fit into builds that don't utilize even a single Weapon. However, alongside Nightshade and Library it's a superstar. Five seconds for two procs is great, and as you'll soon see once we take a look at skills, it gets even better.

Kripp also had a Turbo enchant on the Quill and Ink, making it an incredibly strong Haste item thanks to its Multicast and base three second duration.

Supportive Items and Skills

Accelerators

Energy Potion offers a nice board-wide Haste to kickstart the build. Even with the Turbo Quill and Ink, it still takes a few uses to start reaching full uptime, so that's where having Energy Potion is very useful. Library also brings it to a very nice four second Cooldown.

Infinite Potion may not exactly provide speed, but alongside Library and Haste it activates incredibly fast. Each trigger stacks up the Nightshade, while also working double time thanks to its Restorative enchant.

Freeze Package

Coolant adds a nice bit of Freeze utility that pairs well with the Shiny Rainbow Potion. Knee Brace made this easily possible, allowing it to reroll/pass on the enchantment to Rainbow Potion, which would otherwise be quite a rare find.

Boiling Flask

Boiling Flask is a Mak staple thanks to its Reload support and Multicast bonus. Opting for this does take more board space for the build, but usually results in greater potential since you can get double the effect from the likes of Energy Potion and many others.

It can certainly help to still have at least one Silver tier Ammo skill, as Boiling Flask's Cooldown is very long. Otherwise you're likely to run out of Ammo and waste a few seconds waiting for the Flask to go off.

Vitality Potion

Vitality Potion is one of the slower options, but it provides crazy bursts of Healing like no other. With enough Haste and Reload effects it can really come in clutch. Library helps bring down its long Cooldown as well, and if you ever feel the need for extra offense, it's a great target for a Fiery/Toxic enchantment.

Small Refresh

Small Refresh is an absolute premium skill for the build, turning every single use of a Small item into Healing, and therefore stacking the Nightshade like crazy. Alongside all the Multicast and Library-reduced Cooldowns, this played a key role in the build's insane scaling.

Re-Tooled

Re-Tooled adds an extra Multicast to Quill and Ink, helping to create a single item that outputs so many individual Nightshade triggers. This further compounded with Small Refresh, making it an obvious pickup when offered.

Stocked

Stocked is almost always valuable for any Mak build, allowing you the ability to splash in Potions whenever you need their utility. This build didn't even include any means of Reload, but because of Stocked it could still make use of the Shiny Rainbow Potion, as well as expand the Energy Potion.
