Overview

Max Health builds commonly reign at the top of the late game due to their increased survivability and percentage-based scaling. It's a powerful combo of offense and defense that scales as you level.

Generally speaking, they exist more as a mid to late game pivot since the essential Weapons begin at Gold-tier. However, there are steps you can take to help prepare in advance.

Example Early Game Path

There isn't a clear path from the beginning, so feel free to play whichever line you'd like. That said, the Weapon Friends are likely the easiest starting point since you can still use some of them later on.

Core Synergies

  • Spear is an excellent source of Haste during the early to mid game. Load up your board with Friends and you can easily guarantee it Crits.
    • Flying Squirrel should be placed to its left to help Haste the Spear itself.
    • Hunting Hawk grants Flying and Crit alongside its Friend tag.
    • Honey Badger is the fastest of the bunch, making it the perfect host for Damage scaling.
  • Runed Amulet, Runed Bracelet, and Beast Tooth each offer Damage scaling.
    • Runed Amulet is best when playing multiple Weapons, while the others are better when focusing on one.
    • Lifting Stones can be a great alternative alongside Heal items like Dryad and Waterskin.

Tips & Tricks

  • Hunter's Journal and Hunting Knife are Karnok Economy staples. Definitely pick these up regardless of your game plan.
  • If you're opting out of the Friends' route but can still gain Rage efficiently, then Battle Axe is another solid choice.

Common Filler Items

  • Bear Claws
  • Beast Call
  • Firefly Lantern
  • Hunter's Axe
  • Spiked Wraps
  • Wildroot Amulet
  • Yarrow Paste

Example Mid Game Additions

Many items during the mid game help setup for the pivot as opposed to immediately benefiting your board. Until then, Spear Friends is still a decent game plan.

Core Synergies

  • Hidden Lake is a key component during the late game, providing a sizable Health boost and incredible passive CDR effect.
    • You won't likely play this until you find Runic Claymore or Lost Blade, but it can be worth picking up early for the potential pivot.
  • Hunter's Pack can become an excellent source of both Max Health and Crit Chance.
    • Note that you'll have to give up your Stash space in order to make proper use of it. Early on, this can be a big ask.
    • Forest Cloak on the other hand is the simpler choice. Higher floor, lower ceiling.
  • Snowshoes will help defend against Freeze during the late game (once you swap to one Weapon).
    • Silver-tier will suffice, as the Rage gain generally doesn't matter.
  • Messenger Sparrow + Wolf can help bolster your Spear Friends build with Haste, Charge, and Damage scaling.
    • Messenger Sparrow will also remain relevant later, so it's worth picking up regardless of your current board.
  • Flare is a flexible slot-in for its limited use board-wide Charge effect. The Burn is irrelevant.

Tips & Tricks

  • Hunter's Journal can play a big role in Max Health builds as a strong single-slot source of Crit.
    • Solving Crit is absolutely critical when assembling this build, so if you can utilize Hunter's Journal it'll be significantly easier.
    • Be sure to take any extra PvE fights that are offered to help scale its Value even more. Plus, leveling up is a key way of scaling Max Health!
  • While many of these items are quite weak at Silver (particularly the Max Health ones), it's still worth picking them up anyway.
    • This way, if your prestige drops to zero, you have the option to upgrade everything to Gold (and potentially make a big comeback).

End Game Build Breakdown

Core Synergies

  • Hidden Lake provides Max Health along with much needed Cooldown Reduction. This is what allows the build to reliably keep up in longer fights.
  • Runic Claymore is the premier Weapon of choice thanks to its speed and built-in scaling.
    • After a Crit or two, you can often scale enough HP to become unkillable by most builds (if you haven't already killed them yourself!).
    • Flying Squirrel + Messenger Sparrow is a common duo to help accelerate the build further.
  • Lost Blade can be equally strong but generally requires a lot more support to work efficiently (since you can't play other active items).
    • Trail Markers helps even the playing field with its CDR-increasing effect. Lethargy is an all-star for the same reasons.
    • Combined with Hidden Lake, you can debilitate the enemy and remain speedy yourself once you dip below half Health.
  • Hunter's Pack adds an additional source of Max Health, plus valuable Crit Chance. If you can handle the Stash management it's a great choice.
    • Again, feel free to utilize Forest Cloak instead for an easier setup.
    • Note that these are less important for Runic Claymore than Lost Blade, since Runic Claymore can stack Max HP during combat.

Situational Variants

  • Great Eagle has potential alongside Runic Claymore (and Friends) as a percentage-based Damage amplifier.
    • It can be a reasonable alternative when other options aren't available, but is often tricky to fit onto existing Max Health boards due to space.

Tips & Tricks

  • It is imperative that you solve Crit for the late game. If Hunter's Journal isn't an option, then make sure you prioritize Crit skills/enchants above all else.
  • The Rage mechanic is far less relevant in this build, so feel free to ignore Shortened Rage and Extended Rage.
  • Keep an eye out for Apparel and Pygmalien shops. You may be able to score yourself a Belt.
