Magic Carpet
Magic Carpet is one of Mak's most consistent early game builds. It deals solid Damage, has inherent sustain, and is incredibly easy to assemble. It's not hard to have a functioning build by Day 2, as even Day 1 it's possible to grab most of the necessary components.
As a Bronze tier starting item, you can get
Magic Carpet from the get-go, and it's very common if you encounter the Weapon Merchant. Alongside it you'll want to look for
Bottled Lightning and
Letter Opener. Getting all three from a single visit is doable, so feel free to spend the gold to Reroll.
These two Small items can each guarantee two Crits, quickly knocking off two seconds from
Magic Carpet's Cooldown.
Letter Opener still has a chance to Crit again, but if you upgrade it to Silver you can guarantee its second Crit.
Tazidian Dagger is great next to
Bottled Lightning for the same reason.
This setup along provides a solid early game Damage output, and Weapon skills can make it even better. If you happen to get
Left-Handed, it's usually better on
Bottled Lightning over
Magic Carpet early on. Fights are short enough that the 2x Crit Damage burst is more useful than more
Magic Carpet Damage.
Sustainability
Mortar & Pestle is the easiest way to immediately add some staying power to the build. While its Damage output is good, Mak is still fragile, so having a source of Lifesteal is very important. Alongside the other starting components mentioned above,
Mortar & Pestle rounds out the core.
Overall, the effectiveness and consistency of this build makes it a great starter build that can always pivot or transition later on. Its items are common and accessible enough that you can start building towards a second strategy in your Stash, all while using
Magic Carpet to get by.
Although if you want to strengthen the build and take it even further, you absolutely can. The rest of the build will showcase some great upgrades, skills, and enchants to help get to the next level.
Double Carpet
Magic Carpet already deals a respectable amount of Damage on its own, but if you happen to get two your offense gets even crazier. Finding two isn't exactly easy, but it is actually doable through a couple of methods.
If you take opportunities to Transform Medium items you do have a chance at hitting the second copy. You can also occasionally get a different tier duplicate via random level-up rewards. However, if you want to re-enact the "Double Carpet" without actually getting a second
Magic Carpet, look for a
Mirror!
Regardless, this is by no means necessary to make the build function. It's more of a way to boost its late game viability, as while the build is very reliable early, it doesn't output nearly the same kind of offense as other Mak end game builds.
Kripp happened to get a Turbo and Heavy enchant on each
Magic Carpet. This is a pretty crazy way to accelerate the build and get an edge over the opponent, especially if they lack Haste and/or Slow effects.
Runic Potion
Runic Potion is the quintessential supporting item for all Mak Weapon builds and is the obvious replacement for
Mortar & Pestle. However, it's worth noting that until you grant it more Ammo and/or restructure your build, it's not quite as reliable.
If you're still using stuff like
Bottled Lightning or
Letter Opener, there's a good chance you'll miss the Lifesteal on
Magic Carpet (especially with
Tazidian Dagger still on board). While possible to get after the second or third cast, that may be far too late.
So if your board still consists of a wider presence of Crit support items, consider grabbing
Runic Potion and holding it until the rest of the build comes together. It's not worth giving up the consistent Lifesteal just to save one slot on board.
Runic Great Axe
Runic Great Axe is generally a pretty clunky item, but what it offers
Magic Carpet is a consistent way to Crit. This both removes the need for those early game Weapons, while also providing Crit to
Magic Carpet itself, greatly improving its output.
Of course you'll still need a way to guarantee Lifesteal on the
Magic Carpet. This is where
Runic Potion comes in handy, but otherwise
Mortar & Pestle can still be okay in the meantime. After all, a single
Magic Carpet build actually has more board space to work with, so
Mortar & Pestle is serviceable.
Runic Blade Variant
Runic Blade is an alternative build path that transitions naturally from a
Magic Carpet setup. Alongside
Runic Great Axe and
Runic Daggers you can create a powerful threat with almost limitless Damage. It's a great pivot option if you take too many losses, as it can be hard for
Magic Carpet to win during the later stages of a run.
The one tradeoff to using
Runic Blade is its speed, as it does take time to both rack up Damage and be able to actually use it.
Icicle helps buy time by locking down an opponent's item. For the single Small slot it's worth it, especially since the rest of the board space is pretty flexible.
