Overview

Out of the many interactions with different enchantments in The Bazaar, on-trigger items have the most potential to break the basic rules of the game.

In today’s run, Rarran showcases just how powerful an enchanted Pufferfish is, especially if you land the Fiery enchantment.

Even though the interaction with Fiery Pufferfish is currently bugged - and I’ll explain how in a bit -, it will still be very strong when it gets fixed by Tempo. Let’s get into how the build works and how to activate it

Core Combos and Synergies

Fiery Pufferfish + Trebuchet

Simply reading both items will explain what happens here. As soon as the first point of Burn is applied, Trebuchet will Haste an item which will trigger Fiery Pufferfish’s effect and apply Burn, which will again activate Trebuchet and the loop is started.

It’s an extremely strong and simple interaction, but it requires a specific enchantment, making it very uncommon. Since each player ghost can only be faced once, it’s actually pretty rare to go up against one of these.

The last puzzle piece is finding a way to trigger Haste as soon as possible, which Rarran does have.

Loop Explanation

Clamera + Oceanic Rush

There’s many ways to get the combo going, but the absolute best way is always through a Start of Combat effect since you can’t get faster than that. Going off a couple seconds before the field is insanely strong and Rarran was able to pull off just that.

In all honesty, for Oceanic Rush, the Aquatic item of choice doesn’t have to be Clamera specifically, but out of all the options it’s probably by far the best, since it has everything you want. It’s small, it’s aquatic, it’s a tool and it triggers a Slow at the start of the fight, which can also help activating many other useful effects.

Explaining the Interaction

So you might be wondering how this can be a bug since the text reads very clearly that it should trigger infinitely. The way the item trigger system works in The Bazaar is through a hidden mechanic called internal cooldown. Items that trigger off of each other need some kind of balancing in order to not become actually unbeatable instead of just virtually unbeatable.

The Internal cooldown rule says that an item can only be triggered four to five times every second, and it should be a hard cap. However, a few items can actually break the internal cooldown cap and go off around 60 times a second (yeah, weird, I know). The most popular items that do this are Throwing Knives and Fiery Pufferfish. This interaction is confirmed to be a bug by the Tempo dev team, but it’s not like the items and interactions will suddenly be bad when it gets fixed. They’ll still be strong, but they will just not go off 60 times a second.

However, there is a caveat with Fiery Pufferfish that it is bugged only with Trebuchet. If you’ve played Poison Puffer with Astrolabe and lots of other items you have probably noticed that the fish doesn’t puff as many times as you get Haste, and that Astrolabe sometimes takes a while to give Haste to some items, and that’s because the internal cooldown is holding them back from spewing out buffs left and right in honestly unfair speed. Fiery Pufferfish will also actually start respecting the internal cooldown rule if it Trebuchet Hastes from any other item source.

This is better understood when you actually watch it happen, and now that you understand the theory behind it, you’ll notice it happening in the actual video. For example, forward to the 15:30 Sparring Partner fight and you’ll notice Pufferfish randomly slows down when Pop Snappers is used.

Supportive Items and Skills

Improvised Burn + Critical Chance

Now that we infinitely apply Burn, the main goal is to increase the amount of Burn that’s applied per Pufferfish trigger. The Improvised skill line (gain extra effect when you crit) is perfect for scaling in combat, especially with an early pickup of Inexorable.

Survivability Options

Once the combo is set up, all you need to do is look for as much survivability as possible. With now infinitely ramping Damage, the remaining board slots and skill choices should be used to ensure the opponent can’t kill you before you eventually burn them down. Freeze and healing effects are the best way to achieve this goal.
