Overview

Mak has a lot of control when it comes to manipulating items outside of combat. The Transform mechanic has really made an impact on the game, and while every Hero has access to it, Mak has the most by a large margin.

Continuously Transforming items can create some wildly powerful stuff, especially when enchantments are at play. It also allows you to get ahold of Gold/Diamond tier items much sooner, simply by finding high tier Loot items dropped by PvE Encounters.

However, in addition to all the natural perks, Mak has another way to convert Transforms into raw power. Behold, the Calcinator-stacker!

Core Combos and Synergies

Possible Pursuit

Calcinator is an item that rewards pathing your run to optimize the quantity of Transforms. Similar to Pygmalien and his Damage-stacking builds, you need to pursue it early in order to stack up enough value to contest the mid to late game.

While the Mandala Transform events will help, ultimately you'll want an early Potion Distillery, or a couple of Catalyst generators like Alembic to make it worth your efforts.

It's okay to use Calcinator within the first few days, but if you don't find reliable Transform by day 4-5 you'll likely need to pivot to something else. Visiting Mandala can only get you so far.

Note: This build can also be attempted with Retort instead of Calcinator. They both fulfill essentially the same role, but do keep in mind that Retort is generally a bit slower (Burn ticks faster than Poison).

Calcinator

Every Reagent Transformed contributes a pretty significant amount of Burn, and the rate gets really good at higher tiers so be sure to upgrade as soon as possible.

You'll also need to ensure you have an ample supply of Reagents. Transforming other items doesn't count, so be sure to purchase whatever Small ones you find.

The Chunk of Lead provided at the start of each day will help, but there's still the potential of up to four Transforms per day. Look to purchase extra Reagents to make sure you always have one available when needed (although don't skip priority events like Mountain Pass which can grant XP).

Kripp enchanted his Calcinator with Obsidian to give it a huge Damage boost. Given that this is the sole threat of the build, boosting its offense is a great choice.

Palanquin

Palanquin is an excellent supporting piece for Calcinator, providing two things that greatly support single-item builds; Crit Chance and Cooldown reduction. Since Calcinator is the primary focus, the most important thing is increasing its Damage potential to ensure every activation counts.

Where it also shines is by helping ensure the second cast comes much quicker. Assuming you can Crit the first time around, the following time will be much faster, and if that's not enough it will continue to accelerate if the fight goes longer.

If you can, look to acquire additional sources of Crit Chance to up your rate even more. While 50% will do a decent job, boosting it a lot higher will help avoid those times where luck isn't on your side.

Additional CDR

Hourglass and Star Chart help provide even more Cooldown reduction for Calcinator. Star Chart also has the added bonus of extra Crit Chance, although obviously not a common pickup as a Vanessa item.

Feel free to flex in whatever utility option(s) you find, with the main goals being to accelerate and enable Calcinator, or add another layer of defense/disruption.

Supportive Items and Skills

Energy Potion

Energy Potion is the quintessential Haste item for Mak that fits into almost any build. Adjacent to the Hourglass also allows it to act much faster, speeding up the pace of the entire board. Reload isn't necessary, but you will want at least a bit of extra Ammo to justify its inclusion, either via Gunpowder or skills.

Runic Potion

Runic Potion is just too good not to include alongside any Weapon build, and in particular one-Weapon setups for consistent targeting. However, do keep in mind the only reason this works here is because Kripp had an Obsidian enchanted Calcinator. Without the enchantment, don't bother with this one.

Living Flame

Living Flame is a powerful comeback tool that can really help turn the tide in combat. As the sole item of value, Calcinator needs to act fast, so if things start to get rough it'll really ramp up its speed.

Alongside the Obsidian enchant and Runic Potion it gets significantly better, allowing the Lifesteal to kick into overdrive and keep the build afloat.

Stocked

Stocked often finds itself onto many Mak builds as it simply enables the use of Potions outside of dedicated Reload setups. It's often possible to get enough additional Ammo to where you don't even need Reload effects, therefore freeing up the board for more useful items and strengthening the build overall.

Pendulum, Library, Scales, & Fire Claw Variants

Pendulum

Pendulum is a solid alternative to Palanquin. Instead of providing Crit Chance and Cooldown reduction, it allows another item help Charge the Calcinator. They both fulfill similar roles to support the primary offense of the build, with Pendulum offering a faster startup while Palanquin accelerates the longer a fight lasts.

Insurance Policy

Vitality Potion and Invulnerability Potion give the build a bit of an insurance policy. Alongside Stocked they will get multiple uses without the need for dedicated Reload support.

Vitality Potion can also double as a secondary form of offense if you happen to get a Damage-based enchantment on it. Rerolling Obsidian/Fiery/Toxic items of Gold+ tier is a good way to potentially stumble upon it, without the need to directly enchant it.

Library

Library helps give a nice edge in combat, reducing all of your non-Weapon items' Cooldowns and disrupting any Weapons on the opposing board. This also helps offset the nerf to Calcinator, helping bring it back to a more reliable pace.

Kripp had a Heavy Library which also helped further hinder the opponent. There are a lot of solid enchantment options, so feel free to roll the random enchant on Library when given the opportunity.

Strength Potion

Strength Potion actually received indirect buffs with the "nerf" to Calcinator. Now that Calcinator has a seven second Cooldown, it now aligns nicely so that it can benefit from the 100% Crit Chance of Strength Potion (barring any disruption).

Previously, despite placing it on the left side (with the same Cooldown), it wouldn't trigger in time to actually get the effect. Since it now lines up for Calcinator to Crit, it can still threaten a sizeable amount of Burn despite the big nerfs to its scaling.

Scales

Scales is another alternative to Library or Pendulum that helps accelerate the build by Charging the board. Mak has many items with similar effects, making the archetype very flexible and reliable to assemble since there are multiple valid replacements.

Its Diamond tier makes a considerable difference since it goes from a one second Charge to two Seconds, and since this applies across the entire board (assuming proper positioning), it's well worth the effort to prioritize its upgrade.

Fire Claw + Sunlight Spear

The Tome of Yyahan fits perfectly into the Calcinator game plan, allowing you to permanently stack Regen outside of combat. Assuming you can afford the Stash space, it's possible to build up a huge amount over time.

If achieved, you can actually run Sunlight Spear without needing in-combat Regen scaling. Toss in Fire Claw and you've got a monstrous amount of Burn on top of the Calcinator (also useable without Sunlight Spear).
