Boundless Book Burn

Mak
Updated on Apr 4, 2025

Overview

Stack burn like you wouldn't believe! This build utilizes Secret Formula, which is probably the strongest Mak item in the game. Our other items reduce cooldowns such that we can activate our burn item and regeneration item indefinitely.

Library reduces all our cooldowns by 2 seconds.
Philosopher's Stone, if obtained early enough, will generate huge amounts of regeneration in combat. This provides the build with survivability as well as damage when used with Secret Formula.
Pendulum charges adjacent items, which makes it possible to trigger it's adjacent items indefinitely with the help of Library.
Lighter is the catalyst for this build's burn damage. It is the best option because it has the shortest base cooldown of any burn item in the game (3 seconds) which we will use to get the maximum possible activations from Pendulum.
Secret Formula is the main source of damage, providing the item to the left burn damage equivalent to Mak's regeneration. It has the same effect for the adjacent item on the right, except for poison instead of burn.
Quill and Ink is not a vital part of our build but it still provides an enormous amount of poison damage from Secret Formula which we will be including for our burn damage anyway, so why not?

If the items to the left and right of the Pendulum have a combined cooldown of 4 seconds, they will trigger each other indefinitely. Technically, you don't need Lighter and Philosopher's Stone to achieve this, they just so happen to be the two strongest items for the build.

Two good substitutions for Lighter are Steam Ladle (Pygmalien) and Welding Helmet (Dooley) since they both have a base cooldown of 4 seconds. Because they do not match Lighter's base cooldown of 3 seconds, they will not trigger indefinitely. You can get around this problem by using Infinite Potion instead of Philosopher's Stone, which has a base cooldown of 4 seconds. It is weaker but it makes this build possible.

Alternatively, if you can reduce the base cooldown of Philosopher's Stone by 20% (1 second off), that will be enough to go infinite with Steam Ladle or Welding Helmet. This can be achieved with Insect Wing and Feather, which can be obtained as loot from certain enemies or bought from Curio.

The Main Engine (Necessary Core)

In order to infinitely trigger our burn item and regeneration item, we need to utilize the flat cooldown reduction from Library and pair it with the charge from Pendulum. Diamond Library reduces all our cooldowns by a whole two seconds. This means Philosopher's Stone has a cooldown of 3 seconds and Lighter has a cooldown of 1 second. Diamond Pendulum charges the item to the left by two seconds after using the item on the right and vice-versa.

One second after combat starts, Lighter will trigger and activate Pendulum, which will charge Philosopher's Stone by 2 seconds. 1 second passed + 2 seconds charged = 3 seconds, which is the cooldown of our Philosopher's Stone, which means Philosopher's Stone will activate again. When it does, it triggers Pendulum again, charging our Lighter enough to trigger two times, which means our Philosopher's Stone is charged by 4 more seconds, causing an infinite loop of charges. This means that the only things slowing this build down is the initial startup of 1 second and the game's animations.

Supportive Items and Skills

Sifting Pan is a good item to buy so you can start combat with higher regeneration.
Vital Renewal boosts the regeneration of our Philosopher's Stone when we burn.
Moth to a Flame adds half our burn to our regeneration.
Tracer Fire makes it so we crit more often.
Toxic Flame adds poison to our burn, and Venomous Vitality takes half that poison and adds it to our regeneration.
