Overview

PoE 1 Ascendancies are incredibly powerful, and it's important to make sure you're doing your Labyrinth when you're able to, to get access to this massive power spike as soon as possible.

Today's guide will provide the location of all Lab Trials, some general tips on running your Labs, as well as suggestions on when to do them

The Lord's Labyrinth Explained

The Lord's Labyrinth is a challenge that features a series of connected rooms that players must complete to unlock access to their Ascendancy and additional Ascendancy Points. While in the Lab, you'll face the Boss, Izaro three times along the way and after defeating him for the third time, you'll gain access to your Ascendancy or additional Ascendancy Points at the Ascendancy Altar. The Lab is full of unique challenges such as Traps, hidden buffs, secret rooms and has set daily layouts that change every 24 hours.

Location: The Eternal Labyrinth can be accessed in The City of Sarn (the Town in Act 3).

Access: In order to gain access to the Labyrinth, you'll need to complete a series of Trials of Ascendancy scattered throughout the campaign. These will be listed below

Navigation: At the side of each door to the next area, players can find a Plinth that will show them their progress within the Labyrinth and how each discovered and adjacent room connects to one another. This can be helpful for selecting the quickest path throughout the Lab and avoiding dead-ends

Difficulties: There are four difficulties of the Eternal Labyrinth (simply referred to as "Lab" by most players), which each unlock an additional two Ascendancy Skill Points per completion

Trial Locations

Trials are very short challenges that players need to complete while in the campaign. These often involve dodging traps, fighting monsters before finally clicking the Trial of Ascendancy Plaque. Make sure you're doing these as you go so that you don't have to backtrack later on!

Normal Difficulty - Monster Level 33

  • Act 1: The Lower Prison
  • Act 2: The Crypt Level 1
  • Act 2: The Chamber of Sins Level 2
  • Act 3: The Crematorium
  • Act 3: The Catacombs (found as a side area in the Marketplace)
  • Act 3: The Imperial Gardens

It is recommended that you do your first Lab after completing the final Trial in Act 3, The Imperial Gardens, or after defeating the Act 3 boss and reaching the Act 4 town.

General Tips for Normal Lab

  • Recommended Character Level: ~28-35
  • Resistances: Try to have your Resistances as high as possible but Fire Resistance is most important
  • Life: Try to have a decent amount of Life - around 800+ is ideal
  • Crafting Bench: Use the Crafting Bench to get more Life, Resistances and Damage
  • Life Flasks: 2-3 Giant - Colossal Life Flask+ Upgrade your Flasks to the highest available tier, especially Life Flasks, and use multiple Life Flasks! You can find yourself in an awkward situation where you're stuck between two traps with low life and now Flask Charges - try to avoid this by planning ahead.
  • Life Flask Modifiers: #% increased amount Recovered, instant Recovery when on Low Life (not to be confused by "instant Recovery/reduced amount Recovered"), Immunity to Bleeding During Effect, More Recovery if Used while on Low Life are all useful modifiers
  • Life Regeneration: Having some passive Life Regeneration from the Tree, Items or a Vitality Aura is also great for Lab
  • Don't Get Hit by Izaro! This sounds obvious, but many deaths occur to standing in Izaro's slams by mistake which often instantly ends your run
  • Try to Clear Izaro's additional summons to prevent them buffing him in future fights, but don't get so distracted by this that you die
  • Seek Out Dark Shrines: Discussed later in this guide

Don't worry, if you fail, you can immediately try again or level up some more and try again a bit later (but don't wait too long!)

Cruel Difficulty - Monster Level 55

  • Act 6: The Prison
  • Act 7: The Crypt
  • Act 7: The Chamber of Sins Level 2

It's recommended to do your second Lab either after completing the third Trial or after completing Act 7 and reaching the Act 8 town

General Tips for Cruel Lab

Follow the same tips as above, but also:

  • Recommended Character Level: 50-55
  • Crafting Bench: Don't overlook this to cap your Resistances, get more Life and Damage
  • Aura: Purity of Elements is a great way to increase your Resistances and make you immune to Elemental Ailments such as Freeze, Chill, Shock and Ignite
  • Life: 1800-2100+
  • Life Flasks: 2-3 Hallowed Life Flask. Sanctified Life Flasks are useful for rapid recovery

Merciless Difficulty - Monster Level 68

  • Act 8: The Bath House
  • Act 9: The Tunnel
  • Act 10: The Ossuary

It is recommended you complete your Merciless Lab after completing the Ossuary Trial, before defeating the Act 10 boss. Completing the campaign will permanently reduce your Resistances by another -30%, making it harder to cap your Resistances and complete the Merc Lab if you don't do it first.

General Tips for Merciless Lab

Follow the same tips as above, but also:

  • Recommended Character Level: 65-70
  • Crafting Bench: Don't overlook this to cap your Resistances, get more Life and Damage
  • Aura: Purity of Elements is a great way to increase your Resistances and make you immune to Elemental Ailments such as Freeze, Chill, Shock and Ignite
  • Life: 2500-3000+
  • Resistances: Cold, Fire and Lightning: 75%
  • Major Pantheon (Press Y to change in Town): Soul of the Brine King (Stun Avoidance)
  • Minor Pantheon: Soul of Ryslatha (Flask Charges) or Ralakesh (Bleeding Reduction)
  • Flasks: Divine Life Flask
  • Look out for Dark Shrines!

The Merciless Lab can be a huge challenge for new players, especially early on. If you make sure you have enough Life, Resistances, Damage and Life Recovery from your Flasks. It's totally normal to fail a few times, but if you follow the advice in the guide, you should be fine!

Eternal Labyrinth - Monster Level 75

The Eternal Labyrinth can be accessed after finding an Offering to the Goddess item in the endgame and is sometimes referred to as "Uber Lab". These Offerings can be located from various sources, but the most common will be a Labyrinth Trial within a Map. After completing the Trial, which will be a much bigger challenge than those found in the Campaign, you will be granted an Offering to the Goddess after clicking the Trial Plaque.

Some of these Trials are more difficult than others, but if you take your time, use your Flasks, plan ahead and don't panic, you should be fine. The Six Endgame Trials, which can be found in Tier 6+ Maps are:

  • Trial of Burning Rage - Make sure your Fire Resistance is capped if it wasn't already
  • Trial of Crippling Grief - Have Bleed Avoidance (Soul of Ralakesh) and decent Life Recovery
  • Trial of Lingering Pain - Quite challenging. Make sure to use Soul of Ryslatha
  • Trial of Piercing Truth - Pay attention to the timing of the Spike Traps
  • Trial of Stinging Doubt - Probably the easiest
  • Trial of Swirling Fear - Have decent Life Recovery and don't get hit!

You do not need to complete all of these Trials to gain access to the Eternal Labyrinth - in fact, you don't need to complete any so long as you have an Offering to the Goddess. However, if you fail your Eternal Lab, you'll need to acquire a new Offering to the Goddess to try again

General Tips for Eternal Lab

  • Recommended Character Level: 75-85. Do it as soon as possible, but this can be a real challenge for undergeared characters, so you might want to wait until you have better gear and more damage.
  • Resistances: 75% Elemental Resistances, preferably 0+% Chaos Resistance
  • Life: 3000+
  • Good Single Target Damage (if it's taking you 30 seconds to kill a Tier 10 Map Boss, you might struggle with Izaro unless you're amazing at dodging)
  • Major Pantheon: Soul of the Brine King (Stun Avoidance) or Soul of Arakaali (Damage Over Time Reduction)
  • Minor Pantheon: Soul of Ryslatha (Flask Charges) or Ralakesh (Bleeding Reduction)
  • Flasks: Divine Life Flask, properly rolled with good modifiers
  • Dark Shrines: can be a game-changer in your final Lab

Dark Shrines and Hidden Buffs

Within the Lord's Labyrinth, players can find special challenges, puzzles, hidden rooms, secret passages, but also Darkshrines, which can provide permanent Shrine Buffs to characters, reduced difficulty and additional rewards.

Locating Dark Shrines is the trickiest part as they are often hidden behind walls that can only be opened by clicking hidden switches on nearby walls. These inaccessible rooms can be seen on your Minimap, so if you ever see a location that is seemingly inaccessible, it's worth hovering your mouse until you see a highlighted Switch.

Darkshrine Buffs include:

  • Shrines: Players are by a specific Shrine buff for the remainder of the Lab
  • Trap Disabled: All Traps will be disabled in the final encounter with Izaro (this can be particularly helpful in your Merciless and Eternal Labs)
  • Traps Weakened: Traps in the Lab deal less damage and debuffs are reduced
  • Additional Rewards: Izaro drops an additional Treasure Key or Unique Item, or players gain an additional use of the Divine Font

Labyrinth Rewards

After defeating Izaro for the third time in each Labyrinth, players will gain access to the Ascendancy Chamber with some special rewards that include the Divine Font, Izaro's Treasure, and access to the Altar of Ascendancy where players can choose their Ascendancy or allocate additional Points.

  • Izaro's Treasure: Special Chests that require a Treasure Key to open that contain a random set of similar items, such as Currency, Rare Items, Jewellery
  • The Divine Font: The Divine Font will provide players a series of options that can be used on Skill or Support Gems to grant specific rewards. Most importantly, this is where Transfigured Gems can be obtained which can be build-enabling or valuable. Some of these rewards will add Quality or Experience to a Gem, others might convert a Gem in to Currency items or Treasure Keys, and some can convert Gems into a Transfigured Gem of the same colour, or even a Transfigured version of that exact same Skill Gem. Don't forget to check this!
  • Altar of Ascendancy: after completing your Normal Lab, you will now be able to select your Ascendancy and allocate two Ascendancy Points. Completing a Lab of a new difficulty for the first time will grant you two additional Ascendancy Points, up to a maximum of 8

Respeccing

In case you want to change your Ascendancy, you can simply remove any Points you have allocated on your current Ascendancy, then complete a Lab of any difficulty to gain access to the Altar of Ascendancy where you will be offered the option to change your Ascendancy.

Respeccing your Ascendancy Points will cost 5x as much Gold, or 5x as many Respec Points as usual, so can be quite pricy, but this is usually a fairly inconsequential amount in the endgame
