Overwatch Overwatch Sierra Guide and Overview
Sierra Overview
Sierra is defined almost entirely by the mobility she gains from
Anchor Drone. Once the drone is deployed, Sierra can launch herself towards it, to reposition to attack angles, and escape from danger. The core gameplay loop centers around the drone's cooldown. Grapple in, use damage abilities, grapple out to safety. Proper execution of this gameplay loop is the key to getting value with
Sierra, and interrupting it is vital for the enemy team to shut down a Sierra player.
When it comes to shooting, kit is a mix of skill shots with
Tracking Shot, which is then rewarded by easy auto-aim. Combine this with
Tremor Charge for high burst damage after catching the enemy by surprise with a drone jump.
TLDR
Playing As
- Hit Tracking Shot, then commit – landing the mark turns your damage into consistent auto-tracking, enabling reliable picks and burst combos.
- Play around Anchor Drone cooldown — grapple in for aggressive angles, dump damage (Tracking Shot + Tremor), then disengage safely; this in-and-out loop is your entire value engine.
- Position smart before committing — place your drone in protected, high-value angles so you can both engage unpredictably and always have a safe escape route; bad drone placement = free death
Playing Against
- Break her Drone. When you see
Sierra grapple into an attack position, break her drone first. She'll be a sitting duck and easy kill. - Watch for
Tracking Shot and
Anchor Drone. After either of these has been used, her kill threat is low and you can attack her more aggressively.
Trailblazer can be voided by moving out of its AoE. Jump vertically to get above them, or dash away. Barriers and damage absorption abilities will also block the projectiles shot by the drone.
Strengths And Weaknesses Summarized
- Great pick, potential, and burst damage combos
- Versatile Mobility with Anchor Drone
- Ultimate can insta-kill the entire enemy team
- Struggles at the extremes of close-range and long-range
- Drone is easy to break, and leaves Sierra vulnerable
- Many heroes have easy ways to avoid Trailblazer Ultimate.
Widowmaker Ability Tips
Primary Fire: Helix Rifle
Tips for
Helix Rifle
- The projectiles do two quick waves of widespread, then stay tight.
- Pre-fire to tighten the spread and optimize damage when aiming at longer-range targets.
- When poking at longe range, use
Tracking Shot at near full health so you can stay out and fire for its full duration. Without landing
Tracking Shot, her poke power is very low. When landing the direct hit, her poke is extremely good.
Secondary Fire: Tracking Shot
Tips for
Tracking ShotThe projectiles do two quick waves of widespread, then stay tight.
- MUST maintain LoS. The projectiles will not track around corners or behind walls.
- Sticking an enemy with a
Tracking Shot instantly reloads her full ammo. - If you are low on ammo but have
Tracking Shot available, go for a direct hit instead of wasting time reloading. - Bullets that hit the locked-on target DO NOT consume ammo. However, during the duration shots that miss because you lose LoS do still consume ammo.
- If you are low on ammo but have
- The tracking shot itself can crit, but the auto-tracking shots cannot Crit. Focus on movement during the auto-tracking, and don't worry about going for headshots.
[SHIFT]: Anchor Drone
Tips for
Anchor Drone
- Drone positioning is extremely important. Generally, you should be shooting it at a 45-degree angle or higher to maximize movement and verticality.
- Most importantly, place the drone where it will allow you to move into position to attack the enemy, where it is difficult for them to escape, but also close enough to cover so you can use it again to grapple out to safety.
- Try not to deploy
Anchor Drone where the enemy can shoot it. Use walls to protect it. If they break it, you'll have no way to escape.
- If the enemy team has snipers like
Widowmaker or
Ashe watching the air, use more horizontal close to the ground movement. - Also, it's important to remember you don't always have to use drone to dive in for aggressive plays.
Sierra is quite good when played as a poke hero as well. If it's unsafe to push up, sit back and focus on landing
Tremor Charge, and
Tracking Shot.
[E]: Tremor Charge
Tips for
Tremor Charge
- Explodes on contact with the GROUND or direct hit hero (does not explode on walls).
- The shockwaves function the same as mechanics as
Earthshatter and
Tectonic Shock. Travels up slants and stairs but will not climb ledges.
- The shockwaves function the same as mechanics as
- Initiate attacks with
Tremor Charge to catch enemies off guard and burst down their health. - Use
Tremor Charge before
Tracking Shot. - Hitting
Tracking Shot, then using
Tremor Charge, wastes valuable auto-tracking time.
- Hitting
- An important source of ultimate charge farming. The AoE can easily hit multiple opponents, and the extra damage will help you generate ult faster.
[Q]: Ultimate: Trailblazer
Tips for
Trailblazer
- The drone travels and fires projectile bombs at a diagonal angle below. The drone itself can be blocked by the environment and deployables, such as
Ice Wall, but it does pass through hero bodies. - Use this to your advantage. In rooms or when the enemy has their backs to a wall, firing the Drone into the wall will result in a tighter grouping on the bombs, and higher damage to the targets.
- Most important tip for getting eliminations with your ult is to track the enemy's movement and defensive cooldowns.
- Ex:
Sierra fires
Trailblazer at an enemy
Reinhardt and
Kiriko.
Kiriko uses
Swift Step to teleport out, and
Reinhardt uses
Barrier Field to look up and block all Drone bombs. - Against heroes with similar abilites, make sure to wait until just after you have seen them used, so you can greatly increase the odds of a successful Ultimate.
- Ex:
- Because the Drone travels then fires diagonally downward,
Sierra can use
Trailblazer to attack enemies around corners, behind walls, and on top of high ground.
Perks
Minor Perks
Full Flight
- Good for maps with lots of high ground, such as Numbani and Dorado.
- Enables greater repositioning and gives you more room to move without leaving the drone's range to escape.
- Good minor perk to counter dive and flanks because your dash can travel farther.
Tight Grip
- Best for maps with long sight lines where you spend more time shooting long range, such as Havana and Circuit Royal
- Recommended Minor Perk. Increases the effectiveness of staying back and firing from range, as well as dueling.
Major Perks
Medi-Drone
- Heals
Sierra for 50HP when she grapples to
Anchor Drone. - Only heals once per deployment. Will heal again after the first Drone breaks, and she deploys a new one.
- Enables more solo play by giving you a form of self-sustain. Good when your team has lower healing, or when playing more split off from your Supports.
Locked In
- Even a missed
Tracking Shot grants the bonus attack speed. You can still get value from Locked In with non-tracking bullets. - Best Major Perk for lethality. Recommended to use by default, and only use Medi-Drone situationally when you find you need the healing to survive.
Team Comp Synergies
Sierra pairs best with team comps that reposition often, and attack from multiple angles. Using
Anchor Drone to access high ground and make really aggressive get-in, get-out plays, is the whole reason one would play Sierra. Therefore, she needs teammates who can enable her gameplay loop by either offering support or setting up the engagement and taking the attention off of her.
More stationary tanks like
Sigma can also work well as he can offer
Experimental Barrier to sheild her, and lay down high poke damage to secure picks together. Additionally, shooting
Trailblazer into any enemies caught in
Gravitic Flux is an automatic elim (unless enemy uses perfectly timed defense like
Sound Barrier or
Protection Suzu).
Tanks like
D.Va can also work by moving around with
Sierra's grapple movement, and for protecting her with
Defense Matrix when the enemy team tries to overtake her.
DPS who can draw attention away from her angles by flanking are excellent pairings.
Tracer or
Venture are good examples because they can stay in the enemy's backline for extended periods and cannot be ignored.
Support pairings have more flexibility since
Sierra can adapt her positioning and playstyle to match her allies. She can take off angles with
Illari, recieve ranged sustain from
Lifeweaver, output oppressive poke pressure with
Zenyatta, or be protected
Brigitte.
