OverwatchOverwatch Lucio Guide and Overview

In this Overwatch Lucio guide, you'll learn the fundamentals of their abilities, unique play styles, and fundamental tips. Master ability combos, positioning, and matchup knowledge to excel with other Overwatch heroes!

Lucio Overview

Using his sound waves and beats to inspire his allies, Lucio skates across maps while bringing his team along for the ride. Positioning and mobility are extremely important in Overwatch 2 and Lucio helps his whole team with both.

Although he doesn’t bring a lot of sustain, increasing the movement speed of his team gives them the advantage in deciding when and where to take fights.

He spends most of his time close to his Tank, but Lucio can also be a deadly backline assassin thanks to his wall riding. Master Amp it up timing and Soundwave usage, and you’ll be well on your way to carrying your team with this underground DJ!

TLDR

Play As

  • Speed in your Tank. If your Tank is a brawl style Tank, speed boost enables them to close the gap on the enemy and run them over.
  • Keep your allies in your aura. The indicator in the center of your screen tells you how many allies are being affected by Crossfade. Make sure to keep that number high.
  • Protect your backline. Lucio’s speed and knockback allow him to be a great protector of his backline from enemy flanks and dives. Speed over and help with a counterattack.

Play Against

  • Knockback or stun him. Anything that stops or slows his momentum makes Lucio easier to eliminate.
  • When you see Lucio use Sound Barrier, try to disengage from the fight and wait out the overhealth instead of trying to fight through it.
  • If you keep getting run over by Lucio’s team, pick heroes with good mobility. Their speed won’t matter if you can escape their attack.

Strengths And Weaknesses Summarized

  • Opportunist
  • AoE abilities
  • Doesn't need a lot of resources
  • Hard to play
  • Needs good team coordination
  • Close ranged

Strengths And Weaknesses Explained

Strengths

Opportunist

With unmatched speed, Lucio can quickly react and move. Good Lucio players often wait for opportune moments, such as seeing the enemy use their defensive cooldowns, then speed boost themselves and their team in for the kill.

Large AoE abilities

Unlike many other Supports who can only assist one ally at a time, Lucio’s abilities can affect his entire team at once. Healing, speed boost, and Barrier all have generous AoE and get huge value when his team is all playing grouped up.

Low demand for team resources

Riding vertically on walls, moving quickly and constantly changing up his positioning makes Lucio difficult for the enemy to target. Because of this, he doesn’t demand healing, damage mitigation, or protection resources from his team. The rest of his team can worry about themselves and use their abilities more offensively when Lucio is their Support.

Weaknesses

High skill ceiling

Wall Riding, forward, backwards, in place, through windows, rollouts, and jump spots give Lucio nearly unlimited hero-specific tech. To maximize your Lucio play, you must dedicate many hours to fine-tuning your movement mechanics. He’s easy to pick up, but difficult to master.

Needs team coordination

You’re probably not a Reddit Lucio who can go off on their own and solo kill the entire enemy team one by one. So instead, you’re going to need your team to work as a unit to succeed. It doesn’t matter how good your timing is if no one moves in to attack during Amp it Up speed boost.

Close range LoS

Lucio can’t assist his team unless he’s within the 12m radius of Crossfade and there are no barriers or structures in his way. To maximize the value of his song aura, he needs to be positioned near his allies. Since the Tank typically needs speed boost the most, this means Lucio ends up front and in the open, where the enemy team can target him.

Lucio Ability Tips

Primary Fire: Sonic Amplifier

Tips for Sonic Amplifier

  • Destroy deployables
    • Lucio's range and speed make him better than most at getting into position to destroy deployables like Sym and Torb turrets, Immortality Field, and Healing Pylon.
  • Keep moving while poking
    • Never stand still or stay grounded for long. Even when you are focusing on spamming the enemy team, be careful not to make yourself an easy target.
    • Hitscans have the upper hand and more consistent damage in ranged fights.

Secondary Fire: Soundwave

Tips for Soundwave

  • Get off me
    • Most of the time, you’ll want to use Soundwave’s knockback to keep the enemy away from you and your allies. Especially against close-range and melee heroes, boop them away.
  • Spam
    • A Five-second cooldown is very short. You can generally use Soundwave off cooldown. Unless you need to save for a specific reason, like an environmental kill, or booping away an enemy ult like Death Blossom.
  • Environmental kills
    • The best feeling is knocking people off the map with Soundwave. On maps with edges near the objective, a hole in the middle like Ilios Well, always be on the lookout for enemies standing too close to the edge.
  • Combos
    • Against walls or while diving with speed boost, Lucio has good burst damage combos. If you are moving too slow, or the enemy doesn’t have a wall behind them, the melee cancel will miss.
    • The knockback of Soundwave also makes tracking easier as it briefly locks the enemy's movement.
    • Primary fire → Soundwave → melee

[SPACE]: Wall Ride

Tips for Wall Ride

  • Wall ride as much as possible
    • Lucio moves much faster while wall riding, and the verticality sets him above the standard horizontal plane where most enemies are aiming.
  • Rollouts
    • Very map-specific, but it's a good idea to pay attention to paths where you can jump from wall to wall on your way from spawn to the objective in case you die.
  • Bunny hop
    • If you jump right as you touch the ground, Lucio keeps some momentum for a few jumps.
    • Useful for maintaining speed while transferring from one wall to another.
  • Stall objectives
    • Any objective with walls, windows, or a center column are good for Lucio Wall Ride around when waiting for his team to respawn.
    • Ride in circles, in and out of windows, behind and in front of structures, and be as evasive as possible.
  • Settings
    • PC players. Binding the scroll wheel to jump makes wall jumps and bunny hopping easier.

[SHIFT]: Crossfade

Tips for Crossfade

  • Watch your ally indicator
    • The number in the center of your screen under your crosshairs shows how many allies are being affected by your healing or speed.
    • You don’t need to look around, you can focus on attacking while also making sure to keep in position near enough to keep your allies in your sound aura.
  • Speed or healing?
    • Use healing aura any time your team needs health, or when you want to build Ult charge faster.
    • Use speed boost whenever your team is trying to get close to the enemy or reposition quickly.
    • When most of your team is near full health, feel free to stay on speed boost.

[E]: Amp it Up

Tips for Amp It Up

  • Heal Amp
    • Amp it Up healing is over 4x’s faster than standard healing. If your team gets to critical health, quickly use Amp it Up healing.
  • Speed Amp
    • In brawl and rush comps, you’ll want to primarily save Amp it Up for speed boost. The most important thing with Tanks like Junker Queen, Ram, and Rein is not giving them a bit of healing to live longer. They just need to get close to the enemy and win the fight quickly.
  • Run away
    • When the enemy uses an offensive ultimate, speed Amp your team away from the enemy so they can get behind cover and survive. Then speed them back into the fight once the danger has passed.

Ultimate: Sound Barrier

Tips for Sound Barrier

  • Use reactively
    • Sometimes Lucios will try to start fights with Barrier to allow their team to push in without fear of dying. Typically, this brings much less value to your team and also leaves you defenseless when the enemy attacks with their ultimates.
    • Better to use Sound Barrier in reaction to enemy ultimates. The overhealth is enough to survive most attacks.
  • Cast time
    • Be mindful of your height when using Sound Barrier. The higher Lucio is, the longer it takes for the ult to activate.
    • Enemies can cancel your ult if they stun you before hitting the ground. Watch for enemies with stun abilities, or Sound Barrier behind cover.

Perks

Minor Perks

Bass Blowout

  • Higher Value Minor Perk
    • Lucio can benefit from Bass Blowout every four seconds.
    • Against dive, brawl, and rush comps, 100% take Bass Blowout as the extra knockback distance will keep you and your team safer.
  • Easier environmental kills
    • On maps with lots of ledges, Bass Blowout makes knocking people off the map even more consistent.

Beat Drop

  • Stack Amp it Up uses
    • Use Amp it up before Sound Barrier to maximize your benefit of Beat Drop.
    • Amp it up lasts 6 seconds, and Amp it Up’s cooldown is 12 seconds. At most, you’ll only have to wait 6 seconds before another Amp it Up is available.

Major Perks

Noise Violation

  • Good in teams that are more spread out. If your team is running a lot of poke heroes like Ana, Ashe, and Freja, you’ll be more likely to get them all in your AoE with Noise Violation.
  • Lucio’s playstyle and positioning caters to allies who need speed boost the most already, so the extra Amp range isn’t really necessary.

Accelerando

  • Better for aggressive Lucio players
    • When you solo or team speed into the enemy team, 50% attack speed can be the difference between getting an elim or your target surviving long enough to kill you.
    • If you try for a lot of aggressive plays, or dive the enemy DPS and Supports, you should be running Accelerando.

Maps

The best maps to pick Lucio on are those with lots of flat ground or a lot of space to cover. The team with Lucio will always be able to move and reposition faster than the team without, so maps with a lot of area to walk give more opportunity to benefit from the speed boost.

Also, maps with ledges near the objective create to possibility of instant kills by booping them off the map.

The maps where he struggles the most are those with long, narrow sight lines where the enemy has more time to attack him during his approach. Lucio himself does well on maps with strong high ground areas, but the teammates who benefit the most from speed boost tend to be weaker on those maps.

Best maps

  • Ilios
  • Lijiang Tower
  • King’s Row

Worst Maps

  • New Queen Street
  • Esperança
  • Havana

Team Comp Synergies

Team comps built around Lucio are equipped to take full advantage of his speed boost. Close range and melee heroes generally receive the most benefit from speed boost because they depend on getting close to the enemy to be effective.

Poke heavy comps can work with Lucio as well, but his speed will be used more often for defensive spacing and rotations instead of offensive approaches.

Lucio typically needs another Support with high healing output and burst healing capabilities to make up for his lack of sustain. In these teams, Lucio also functions as a backline protector by using his quick movement and knockback to keep his allies safe from enemy flankers.

Example of a team comp built around Lucio:

  • Tank: Reinhardt, Zarya (6v6)
  • DPS: Cassidy, Mei
  • Supports: Lucio, Moira

Individual synergies with other heroes

Reinhardt

  • When Rein starts swinging on an enemy, they’re done if they can't immediately escape. Rein’s biggest weakness is his short melee range, and Charge being his only movement ability.
  • Lucio’s speed enables Rein to quickly get into melee range and overtake the enemy. With Amp it Up he can even shield walk faster than the enemy can walk away. Coordinate Amp it Up when Rein has the health to keep swinging, and you'll have some easy classic wins.

Cassidy

  • Cassidy is a mid-range hitscan with a great anti-dive kit. Lucio's poke and speed combined with Cassidy's damage output make them a lethal duo who oppress the enemy with ranged damage while simultaneously having high survivability.
  • Lucio helps peel for Cassidy when he's getting overwhelmed by the enemy team, and Cassidy does the same for Lucio.
  • Additionally, a speed-boosted Deadeye is very hard to deal with because of how fast Cassidy moves around. They completely control sight lines and force the enemy to retreat.

Moira

  • Moira and Lucio’s AoE healing make them the perfect brawl Support duo. Teams that play grouped up will constantly be healed, and can move around as an unstoppable deathball.
  • Moira's healing is high enough that Lucio can also go on occasional flanks when the opportunity presents itself.
  • Neither Support needs to waste their resources peeling for the other because they both have high self-survivability. This allows them to focus on enabling the rest of their allies.
