During the 2026 Rocket League Championship Series Paris Major, Epic Games and Psyonix unveiled a long-rumoured announcement: Rocket League is moving to Unreal Engine 6.
Rocket League was first released in July 2015 for PS4 and PC, and rolled out on Xbox in February 2016, and on Switch in 2017. Since 2020, Rocket League has been free-to-play after moving to the Epic Games Store.
Originally built on Unreal Engine 3, Rocket League’s ageing foundation has limited Psyonix’s ability to deliver regular updates and new features in recent years, which fans really want.
During the Paris event, a very short clip was teased showing Rocket League running on the UE6 (Unreal Engine 6).
From a development standpoint, it makes complete sense for the game to switch engines, as UE3 has some limitations that newer engines do not, given its older and less polished nature. However, Epic Games and Psyonix haven’t given us a timeline for when this update will arrive, and we would rather see them take their time than release an unpolished version.
