Monster Hunter WildsXu Wu Guide - Weaknesses, Location, Armor & More

Video Guide

Overview

Xu Wu is one of Monster Hunter Wild’s new species, belonging to the Cephalopod family. These multi-limbed monsters unleash a relentless barrage of attacks, making them a challenging foe to face.

They reside in the Ruins of Wyveria, feeding on the Guardians found there before retreating back to their crack in the wall to hide. With its ability to swiftly vanish and reappear from seemingly impossible angles, Xu Wu is a master of ambush tactics.

This guide is written by @DerektheMage.

Location

Xu Wu can only be found in the Ruins of Wyveria, typically lurking in the lower levels of the map.

How to Prepare

Xu Wu’s primary weakness is Damage, making an Ice-element weapon essential for an easier fight. Its secondary weakness is Poison, so if an Ice weapon isn’t available, one with Poison should suffice.

Bringing a Cut Damage weapon will also help sever some of Xu Wu’s tentacles, making for an overall smoother fight.

Mechanics to Look Out For

Spike Fan

Xu Wu raises one of its limbs as sharp spikes rapidly grow from it. It then slashes forward, launching the spikes in a straight line toward the nearest target.

Slam → 360 Swipe

It grows a spiked club-like structure on the end of one of its front two limbs, proceeding to slam down and swipe it across the ground in a spin attack immediately after.

Spin Attack

Its limbs take the shape of blades as it coils together, preparing for a spin attack. It then spins rapidly, creating a large area of danger around itself.

Whirlwind Attack

Turning itself inside out, Xu Wu pushes off the ground, propelling its spinning body with its mouth exposed. It deals massive damage if it is not blocked or dodged. It can be stopped with a heavy strike towards its mouth while it's preparing the attack.

it can also launch its body into the air and quickly repositions. Upon landing, it immediately uses a Whirlwind Attack, dealing massive damage. This attack has a very short window from landing to execution, so be on the lookout for this move.

Aerial Evade

Using its limbs, it pushes off the ground, evading into the air while sending spikes in the direction it left the ground.

Slash

After forming a blade on one of its limbs, it pulls its body, propelling itself forward for a large slash.

Multi-slash

Forms four blades, after which it uses four swift attacks focused directly in front of it.

Spear

Xu Wu’s longest reaching melee attack, they form a spear-like blade on one of its limbs, then quickly thrust it directly at its nearest target. This attack has an extremely narrow hitbox, making it very easy to sidestep or roll out of the way.

Chop

Forms blades on two of its limbs, and shortly after, it chops down with both blades in a narrow attack.

Hide

Xu Wu will disappear into small cracks in the walls or ground and then reappear somewhere nearby. When reappearing, it may use an attack.

Weak Spots to Focus

  • Body Weak Points: Mouth
  • Severable Points: Small Tentacles
  • Breakable Points: Head, Mouth, Large Tentacles

Xu Wu’s four rear tentacles are severable, reducing its range and the damage of all attacks involving those tentacles. If using a Cut Damage weapon, it is highly recommended to aim for severing as many as possible. Once severed, each limb can be carved for extra materials!

The head and mouth are also prime locations for dealing stagger damage. If using a Blunt Damage weapon, aim for the head to land powerful knockouts!

Turf Wars

As a predator, Xu Wu has been observed engaging in Turf Wars with all Guardian monsters. In these encounters, its opponents often sustain heavy damage, while Xu Wu typically emerges victorious.
