Overview

After more than five years in Early Access, Valheim is finally approaching its full 1.0 release.

The update introduces the Deep North, Valheim’s final biome, alongside new enemies, weapons, resources, food recipes, achievements, and environmental mechanics.

Valheim will also launch on PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2, with crossplay supported across every available platform.

Here is everything officially confirmed for Valheim 1.0.

Valheim 1.0 Release Date and Platforms

Valheim 1.0 releases on September 9, 2026.

The full version will be available on:

  • Windows
  • Linux
  • Mac
  • Xbox One
  • Xbox Series X|S
  • PlayStation 5
  • Nintendo Switch 2

Valheim will continue to support between one and ten players.

Anyone who already owns Valheim in Early Access will receive the 1.0 update automatically. You will not need to purchase the game again.

The Deep North Is Valheim’s Final Biome

The Deep North is the centerpiece of Valheim 1.0 and the game’s final biome update.

Located at the northern edge of the world, this frozen region introduces new environmental hazards, resources, enemies, recipes, and other content to discover.

Iron Gate has not yet revealed the biome’s complete progression or the full list of new content arriving with the update.

Although the Deep North is Valheim’s final biome update, it will not necessarily be the game’s final update. Iron Gate plans to continue releasing bug fixes and quality of life improvements after 1.0.

Snow and Ice Affect Exploration

The Deep North introduces environmental hazards connected to its frozen setting.

Ice is slippery, and careless Vikings can stumble while trying to maintain their balance. Players will need to watch where they are moving, especially while exploring unfamiliar areas or dealing with enemies.

The biome also contains areas covered by deep snow. This snow must be removed before you can properly settle down and build in the affected area.

Players will be able to craft a shovel and use it to clear the ground. Establishing a permanent Deep North base will therefore require some preparation before construction can begin.

New Resources and Food Recipes

The Deep North contains new resources that can be collected while exploring.

One officially revealed resource is the lingonberry. These berries grow in wooded areas and are used in several of the biome’s food recipes.

Iron Gate has not revealed the complete collection of Deep North food or the effects provided by each recipe.

Can You Continue an Existing Valheim World?

Existing Valheim worlds and characters will remain available after the 1.0 update.

Your old saves will not be removed or reset, allowing you to continue playing from where you previously stopped.

However, biome generation only works correctly in areas that have not already been explored. If you have visited large parts of the Deep North, those locations may not generate all the new content as intended.

Iron Gate recommends beginning a fresh world for the best possible 1.0 experience. You can still continue an existing save and travel directly to the Deep North, but a new playthrough is recommended.

Players keeping an important world should consider creating a backup before installing the update, particularly if that world uses mods.

New Enemies and Weapons

Iron Gate has confirmed that Valheim 1.0 introduces new enemies to fight and weapons to craft.

However, the developer has not officially published a complete list of these additions. Their names, statistics, crafting recipes, and progression requirements remain unrevealed.

This means players will need to explore the Deep North, gather new materials, and discover its crafting progression for themselves.

Achievements Are Coming to Valheim

The achievement system begins tracking your progress from the moment you install version 1.0. Actions completed during Early Access will not necessarily count automatically.

For example, if an achievement requires defeating Eikthyr, you will need to defeat him again after installing the update.

Using most developer commands will permanently prevent the affected character and world from earning achievements. The spawn command is one example, while limited commands such as freefly are treated as exceptions.

Characters that used cheats before the release of version 1.0 will also be marked.

Items created using cheats will be visibly labelled. Picking up one of these items temporarily prevents an eligible character from unlocking achievements, but eligibility can be restored by removing every cheated item from the character’s inventory.

Valheim 1.0 Supports Full Crossplay

Valheim 1.0 supports crossplay between every available platform.

Windows, Linux, Mac, Xbox, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2 players will all be able to join the same multiplayer sessions.

Cross platform save progression is more limited. Xbox players can access their saves on PC when playing the Microsoft Store version of Valheim.

Other platform combinations will not support automatic save synchronization at launch. Crossplay lets you play with friends on another platform, but it does not allow most players to move the same character or world between different systems.

Will Mods Work With Valheim 1.0?

Valheim does not have official mod support, meaning Iron Gate cannot guarantee that existing PC mods will work when version 1.0 launches.

Mod creators may need time to update their work. Players should avoid opening important modded worlds until their installed mods have been confirmed as compatible with the new version.

Valheim 1.0 will not include Steam Workshop integration or console mod support.

There will also be no Public Test Branch for version 1.0 before its release. Iron Gate wants every player to experience the update at the same time.

Performance Improvements

Valheim 1.0 includes several performance improvements.

Iron Gate has confirmed that the update will reduce some of the microstuttering caused when zones are loaded into or removed from memory. Saving will also be faster, alongside several other smaller optimisations.

Players with extremely large settlements should keep their expectations measured. Iron Gate does not expect the 1.0 improvements to have a major effect on performance around particularly complicated builds.

The developer plans to continue working on Valheim’s performance after release.

Should You Start a New World for Valheim 1.0?

Iron Gate recommends starting a new playthrough when Valheim 1.0 releases.

A fresh world ensures that the Deep North generates correctly while allowing returning players to experience the full progression again with achievements enabled.

You can continue using an existing world, but previously explored areas may not receive all the new biome generation.

Players attached to their current settlements can keep their old saves, while anyone looking for the complete intended 1.0 experience should begin a new journey.

Valheim 1.0 releases on September 9, 2026, bringing the game out of Early Access and opening the frozen Deep North to every Viking.
