Sony is Ending Physical PlayStation Disc Sales

RIP Physical Disc Collectors

It’s official: physical disc production for new games on PlayStation consoles ends in January 2028.

In a recent blog post by Sony's senior director, Sid Shuman, the company announced that PlayStation is moving away from physical discs and towards fully digital products starting in January 2028. This means that future games must be purchased on the PlayStation Store or at retailers in digital form only.

Sony has stated that it is doing this to adapt to consumer trends and preferences for digital media over physical discs, and with players increasingly buying digital media, it makes perfect sense for Sony to make this move.

With upcoming major titles such as GTA 6 launching as a download-only title (later released physically as well), it could also mean the end of the road for physical collector editions as we know them.

Regardless of what we think of this change, the nostalgia of going to the game store, picking out your game, and then going home to play it will surely be missed by gamers.
